how old were you when you grew out of thinking irony and post irony were valid schools of thought?
I was 22. It took me longer than it should have, I know, but I'm glad it happened.
post irony is bullshit. thats all you need to know
and okay to make this music related also post an album you sincerely enjoy
Do you like the movie? Genuinely curious. I'm a fan of Tim and Eric and haven't seen it. My friend is an professional comedian who lives in Williamsburg but hates Tim and Eric because of their hyper ironic/dadaist style, but this movie seems to be a statement about the limits of irony?
The movie is basically a warning about what happens when you embrace irony. It serves very well as that.
Personally, I find the first few seasons of Tim and Eric geniunely, sincerely funny.
>And this isn't really music related
>post-irony isn't related to /mu/
Take a look at this board.
Also, post-irony is pretending you're retarded without saying you're pretending to be retarded.
So it's a le master ruseman that doesn't have back pedal.
the TRIP is not contributing to the topic
fucking cancer, if you want attention and fame for your name you could go back to reddit
>im not a guy btw
wait, are you implying that any of you have ever ACTUALLY done things out of a sense of irony rather than genuine enjoyment?
i knew this board was autism
is it weird that this doesn't bother me at all?
like intellectually i think that it must be uncomfortable to have something with such an unusual texture in your mouth, but it provokes no emotional reaction
So what's your solution, OP? To be sincere all of the time? I really don't understand the umbrage taken with irony or post-irony. The world we live in is kind of bullshit. We're living in a time in which our day to day lives are permeated with watered-down replicas of symbols that were shitty to begin with.
What's the solution here? At least the New Sincerity reflected a self-aware attitude that life has become banal. I don't really know where to move from here. It seems like wide-eyed, unironic sincerity isn't even an option at this point.
I do think post-irony is exhausting, though.
Irony sucks because people do it so much you can't tell when there is sincerity.
Like those jokes where the imply they were kidding but you know they are getting under your skin. I rather someone would just call me out on stupid shit then be ironic. People also seem to do everything in the name of irony, like listen to music, watch tv, or some shit like that.
Teenagers are memes
Congratulations! This post has been selected as a Nominee for the 2015 Channies in the category of Thread of the Year! The voting doesn't start until September, but congratulations for your nomination and thanks for your contribution!
I've been seeing this anti-irony trend a lot amongst 'enlightened' 20-somethings and I'm curious as to where it's coming from.
Irony is powerful rhetorical tool when used appropriately. I get the impression that everyone was assigned Infinite Jest in their college-level English course and now consider themselves experts on this conversation.
its literal anime autistics who dont like it because they cant understand jokes because ironics and sarcasms so not exist in Japan and in animes. The only form of humor in Japan is something crazy happening and then a straight man explains the situation is crazy. they only laugh when they are told to. Also they are autistic
>I just read DFW everybody!
Congrats, but irony is not a school of thought you moron, it is a literary technique and a way of speaking. That's like saying you grew out of thinking metaphors were a valid school thought. Post-irony simply refers to a heightened awareness of irony, which you are (poorly) demonstrating through your adolescent mewling about how much you hate post-irony
Overall grade of you and this opinion: D-, do NOT see me after class, I dread ever hearing another half-baked thought tumble out of your idiotic mouth.
>how old were you when you grew out of thinking irony and post irony were valid schools of thought?
>99% of everyone does not use it appropriately
I don't think you're really aware of A) what you're saying and B) what you're talking about. You fall into the category of the 'enlightened' 20-somethings diverting from the herd because "everyone is doing it, therefore it must be flawed".
It's okay to admit that you don't find a certain brand of humor enjoyable without rejecting the concept as a whole OR claiming that it's a phase you can grow out of.
Seems like you're the one being a bit post-ironic there, friend :-)
to be honest, the only acceptable form of irony is ironic irony
Post-irony is one of the two popular approaches to solving the Sincerity/Irony dichotomy and by far the more difficult one to use well.
A post-ironic thing works as both ironic and sincere.
It doesn't matter which viewpoint you pick, both will be perfectly acceptable.
An example of a music related post-ironic statement is "Sunbather was a very good album", hell Sunbather actually qualifies as post-ironic work.
The other approach to solving this problem is metamodernism.
Basically it states that irony and sincerity are completely interchangeable and it doesn't matter which one you go for.
I'm not even sure what's going on in this thread
What the hell do you mean they're not valid schools of thought?
Whether you like it or not, irony and post-irony are both real occurrences, and the jump from irony to post-irony can be unintentional or on purpose.
Look here everybody. Embarrassed by his shocking ignorance of basic English composition, dave strider is drowning himself in memes and irony to avoid acknowledging his own idiocy. I don't know why you dislike irony so much; without it you would be forced to admit to yourself that you're a pretentious shithead who has no idea what he is talking about
i can tell for several reasons that you did not read or understand this thread
this pic is for you
The real shocking thing about this, considering the oscillating nature of the truth is that he's either hypocrite, or an idiot.
Very nice metamodern performance friendo.
I'd rate it a 6/10, sincerely.
They aren't schools of thought you absolute pleb. Irony is an expression, and post-irony is a reaction. The act of knowing about post-irony, much less thinking its valid and trying to 'use' it, invalidates the existence of post-irony at all. Maybe you should grow out of using terms you don't understand, too.
I don't think that's the definition of post-irony, correct me if I'm wrong
Post-irony is when an ironic act is misinterpreted as being sincere, or when the act itself becomes sincere.
>Post-irony is when an ironic act is misinterpreted as being sincere
The simplest explanation for Post-irony is the blending of irony and sincerity in a way that both sides are equally true and the actual intent is ambiguous.
Basically you're making something ironic/sincere, that cannot be distinguished from a sincere/ironic thing, while clearly still retaining the ironic/sincere qualities.
This concept has been around for a long time, but it's never been named, because people rarely ever did it intentionally until recently.
Except that returns you to irony. Irony is a double negative. If you're ironically being ironic, you're just being ironic. The only way for irony to be ironic in itself is if you're unaware of it being ironic.
>Post-irony is when an ironic act is misinterpreted as being sincere
Not exactly, but you have the right idea. It's not that it's misinterpreted, it's when irony becomes sincerity. A good example is /mu/. People started off spamming shit like Lil B and Waka Flocka ironically. They were aware that they didn't actually like it. Then a wave of newfriends came in that weren't aware there was a joke. In order to fit in, they started trying to genuinely appreciate what was satire. Those people were exercising post-irony.
I've heard two definitions, with Die Antwoord and South Park being good examples of both
In the first definition, Die Antwoord take on an over-the-top image and aesthetic. This could be interpreted as sincere, and they are trying to appeal to the audience that would unironically listen to such music, or ironic, satire or commentary on the same audience. It is unclear which is intentional, and that it the point
Second definition. South Park started off by(what I think) was occasionally adding in extremely low-brow jokes to poke fun at low-brow comedy. As the show went on, the jokes grew more and more common and eventually became sincere low-brow jokes. This could be the creator's faults, misinterpreting what the older writers were doing or becoming lazy and finding they were easier jokes to make, or it could be the audience's fault, with newcomers to the show not understanding the irony and taking the jokes seriously, which influenced the writers. (South Park has always been shit though)
They should be. You're an annoying attention whore.
[whole last paragraph]
Exactly. That proves my point perfectly. Notice how there wasn't any intention to let it regress that far. If they had started off with the intention to make it all low-brow humor, it would have been simple ironic satire. The only dividing line between irony and post-irony is intention, which breeds sincerity.
no she's just really that dumb all the time. I normally have her filtered but I'm on a different comp. literally the only person other than xuosis who was ever obnoxious enough to filter. she's just trying to get validity for her stupidity
Except if you read the thread you'd know that you can't be post-ironic. Fucking hell. Only retards would act like you.
>xDDD I was only IRONICALLY shitposting!!!! LE MAY-MAYS YEE LMAO!!!! XD
I like what you're saying, but I'm not quite on-board with the Waka part. I think that was a lot simpler - more like, "this is fun to listen to, obviously not requiring of a lot of talent, and totally ridiculous".
Lil B serves as a better example - it's a kind and type of "bad" that oddly does require talent, and is only fun to listen to in small doses and without being 100% sincere as a listener.
>Except if you read the thread you'd know that you can't be post-ironic
Except, if you were any less of a self centered asshole you'd realize you don't hold the only definition of post-irony
I know I gave Lil B short shrift, and Lil B does have some sincere songs that I love. But he has put out so much - so, so much - that is, if it's not ironic, what is it? Compulsive rapping in an effort to reach some deep truth via brute force?
Just how much sincerity is being lost is totally subjective. I agree with that. But there's no denying that, at least on a board-wide level, Waka was ironically shitposted in the wake of the whole memerap fiasco, and that the newfriends who picked up on it were missing the irony. I don't really have a personal opinion on him either way.
I oscillate between technomodernist irony and post-post-new-sincerity. Right now it's both.
Except, if you read any books you'd realize that's not /my/ definition, but the definition that's been laid out by the men who created the term itself. Maybe try getting your information from a book instead of a pedophile imageboard.
>The word is "coined"
Undefined semantics, the final death rattle of a man who's lost an argument.
Protip: both terms are used interchangeably in the context of modernism because it refers to both a movement and the definition of it.
>remember that the meaning of words changes over time
Modernist definitions are pretty much exempt from definition changes due to how much dick-wagging comes from creating a new form in academia. The second any aspect of a previous movement of modernism is changed, there's a desperate rush to create another despite the fact that anything past post-modernism and new sincerity is redundant.
Good. I have a plan that will free us from the grip of irony, and eradicate post-irony. This is the first step.
It's an intelligent discussion about complex topics. Only white Europeans are capable of this.
You don't even understand that post, do you? You've been wrecked 100 times over in this thread, yet you don't even have the balls to reply to any of it. What a cakeboy.
>creates an entire thread
>replies to my post
>xD IDGAF!!1! LOOK HOW MUCH I DON'T CARE GUYS XDDDDDD
Let me guess, you're going to cop out twice by saying you're just being post-ironic, aren't you?
c a k e b o y
No. I'm just going to report every single off-topic post you make - which is pretty much all of them. Previous shittrips like jbeni and blf were worth keeping around because they were at least ironically amusing and self-aware. You, on the other hand, aren't. The sooner you fuck back off to tumblr, the better.
this thread, an important piece of /mu/ history, is now archived
i would like a college english or philosophy professor to read it and do a short essay on the themes within - kickstarter?
