I just started uploading the Nonesuch Explorer series. Unfortunately, XLD doesn't work like I wanted it to, so I haven't compressed them to MP3s. Instead, they're the exact FLAC files from what.cd, so anyone who wants to seed a bit of free stuff could potentially grab these files and just link the torrents.

I've been trying to explore Tamil folk music recently. Unfortunately it's pretty difficult to find high-quality files, even though folk music is pretty popular in Tamilnadu and tons of Tamil pop music incorporates folk elements. I have had some luck finding actual pure folk on film soundtracks (the primary source of music in India) though again it's not always easy to find them in high quality.

Also I keep winding up in weird detours into Punjabi folkhop, which I don't even like that much. I did find some pretty cool pure folk Punjabi songs today though.

Is there much difference between Tamil music and Carnatic music?

In case you're interested, I have pastbinned every entry in Oxford Music for India, you can find it here:

Interesting tool. It doesn't look very accurate, though. I know for a fact that I have scrobbled music from Madagascar, for example, but it shows up as 0. I'm guessing it reads the last.fm tags, which for the vast majority of my traditional folk music scrobbles don't have the country in the tags, if there are any at all.

Uh... Carnatic music is South Indian classical, and since South Indian culture tends to be dominated by Tamil stuff (though it also incorporates the Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam groups), I guess you could call it a type of Tamil music. Chennai is generally considered the main centre of Carnatic music.

I don't consider classical music to be folk, though. Tamil folk music is generally unpolished and often danced to, played in rural areas by people of lower castes, so it's almost diametrically opposite to classical music.

This is a pretty good example of purer folk music, though it's from a popular film. I was actually pretty impressed with how authentic this soundtrack was, especially given that I usually don't click with Yuvan's soundtracks for whatever reason.

Ah, fair enough. That sounds pretty interesting, I too might want to try and dig something up.

25% done now. I wish mega cons didn't slow down speeds when another tab is focused. Should have probably hosted it on my ftp instead, would've been much much faster.

More Tamil music, just because I just found this song again and it's one of my favourite examples of pretty pure (well, once you get past the intro) folk in a film soundtrack, if only for the kombu blasts at the start

Uploads paused for a bit while I took a nap, but it's at about 85% done now. You can download quite a few albums from this folder now, so have a look through it if you want:

I guess this would be the place to ask? I heard the closing songs of Selma and kind of fell in love with them. So my question is do you guys have any recs or ideas for similar stuff(old time spirituals sung by a chorus of people) or really anything in that vein.

Can you post a YouTube link or something as a sample?

I don't really know if there is anything there because I don't know what to search for I guess you would've had to see the movie to understand.
