Jazz, at least (arguably) '50s and on became a "high art" genre.
Early it was so heavily related to big band and dance genres that it was largely ignored by anyone but the American bourgeoisie.

Anyway I find the Dixieland stuff absolutely perplexing. Perhaps one of the most powerful subgenres I've heard -- the chaotic free-improvisation is nowhere to be seen in later decades. Shame big band overshadowed it.
