Don't use them in public because they leak sound like a bitch, but if you want balanced, accurate sound in an exceedingly comfy format, these are the headphones for you. After not listening to them for a while, when I pop them on again their quality surprises me all over again. Not to be a faggot, but I like them equally in their own way. The m50s may have an edge over the hd558s in shear value: the m50Xs come with three interchangable cables for any situation. Listening to HD558s is like drinking some really refreshing ice water. The M50Xs are like ice cold Pepsi. Both are refreshing the first time you try them, with the Pepsi definitely being the funner of the two, but, over time, the water becomes boring while the Pepsi becomes sickening. That's why it's nice to interchange between both.

I'm no expert on headphones or anything but don't believe the m50 haters, they really are great headphones for the price. I would check out the head-fi guide on buying headphones though, it'll give you a good idea of what you should get. You can probably just google it and it will come up

So on Amazon there's 3 different ATH-M50x's... One comes with 3 cords, one comes with a "FiiO E6 Headphone Amplifier" and one with a hardbody case.

I'm leaning towards the package with the cords, but I'm curious, does a headphone amplifier make much of a difference?

You don't need a headphone amp for m50's. They just increase the loudness in case the resistance of the headphones is too much to get it to loud enough levels, but that is only a problem when you get to the $300+ range.
