Burial At Sea is a lot of fun for fuzz. Probably my current favorite. I have a few other fuzz pedals that don't match it in heaviness or quality (I play bass).
I dig my Dispatch Master (reverb and delay; Disaster Transport would be good too) and my Arpanoid (polyphonic pitch arpeggiator) from Earthquaker. I'm looking to get an Afterneath from them. The unique repeated digital reverb sounds fantastic.
I do use a Boss (basic) loop and an overdrive (bass obviously; odb-3). Both are whatever. Better for tweaking the sound than crafting a unique identity.
I'm looking to get a EHX Supersynth or some sort of heavy ambient effect pedal (the EQD Organizer).
Stacking these has been a ton of fun and I've been thinking about building a custom pedalboard this winter.
Well you can pick them up for around 50 bucks on ebay so I dont think they are that rare.
I love those old DOD pedals though so I might pick one up just because I love delays and dod

I haven't heard anything by Boss that isn't middling. They have some 'alright' stuff as I've bought some that is both disappoiinting/bad and others that are usable.
Every fuzz they've made since the DS-2 is terrible.

I just got one of those a few days ago, and I love it.
Other pedals on my board I really dig are the Earthquaker Devices Bit Commander, the Digitech Supernatural, and the Boss RC50 looper.

I don't think I could ever enjoy something so plain. It's not enjoyable to tweak or play with, and that's part of the fun of pedals for me.
A pre-amp is usually just that -- a substitute for a better amp.
It's not like these pedals have less knobs and options than the preamp section of your average bass amp. And you can supplement the sound by choosing a certain power amp and cabinets.
Also where are the bass tops that sound like the B7K or the BC1? I'm interested.
My HM-2 is very dear to me, though my bandmates hate it for some reason.
For a gigging musician not always playing their own stack this is nice way of keeping a consistent sound. XLR out to FoH and the other out to the loop return on the provided amp(bypassing the preamp).

tbh actual EHX muffs in general these days are pretty lackluster.

There's this piece of gear I read about from this guy who in his obsession with AC/DC's guitar tone developed a replica of a Schaffer wireless system. They were known for having a great compressor/expander in them. Would love to play with one.

Is this sound only possible from that bigger pedal or is there like a single pedal who's function is that one thing? I don't know a lot about this kind of stuff and I want to know more so go easy on me.
I bought one of these to emulate a Roland Juno 60 chorus/Boss CE-2. Hands down this is the best analog chorus out right now.

You plug your guitar/bass/keyboard into a pedal or series of pedals then into your amplifier. This is called your effects chain, based on the pedals you are using you will want them in a certain order.

A power supply is recommended, but pedals can run off a 9v battery. You will also need cables to connect the pedals (1/4 inch audio cables).

see last point. I don't really know about boards, I'm pretty sure they just keep your patch cables (wires) tidy and maybe have a power supply with them.

There are cheap pedals and their are expensive pedals, it depends on what you want. Analog pedals are generally more expensive than digital ones, and the really expensive pedals usually have alternate functions IE. A cheap digital boss chorus could just have one set delay time for the chorus, while an expensive pedal like >>52099815 can have the delay time changed via the voice knob. Check shopgoodwill/ebay/craigslist/irl thrift stores if you want the absolute cheapest pedals you can get.

For the pedal to work, it needs power suply. You can use either a AC adaptor or a 9v battery.
Then, you need 2 P10 cables (the standard guitar ones), one goes in you guitar to the pedal, and the other from the pedal to the amp.

Depends on where you live, try ebay and local stores. The price depends a lot on the brand and the effects you are looking for.

Attack is the increase of the sound over time. A drum doesn't have any attack, it just decays over time once it's been struck. Attack is kind of like the opposite of decay. It's kind of a lengthy explanation to get into, but that's the basics of the black pedal. The pedal on the left is an echo/reverb pedal, reverb is the type of sound you hear when your inside of a concrete stairwell and the sound keeps echoing off of the walls.
It might be a bit pricey, but it's one of the few bass overdrive pedals that doesn't fuck up your low-end frequencies.
You know that you're completely wrong right? Attack is the instant initial sound? Sustain is how much of the attack is maintained over time or in other words, the more sustain it has the less the sound decays. Drums are percussive they have the most attack. They instantly cut through everything.
Reverb is for lack of better terms, the natural echo you have of being in a playing space. There's small room reverb, medium stage, rock arena, cathedrals, and all other different settings that give different reverb sounds. Being inside of a concrete stairwell would just be a specific example of reverb.

So I know next to nothing about guitar pedals/boards and am thinking about investing in some because I'm sick of just playing on the shitty few settings on my amp. What are some entry-level pedals? Also some kind of looper that can loop multiple things would be nice too.

Someone else may want to chime in, but I just can't recommend pedals on a solid state amp. Pedals (analog) are generally designed to be used with tube amps.
Nowadays you can get a decent sounding tube amp in the 10-15watt range for 200-400 bucks. I recommend upgrading your amp before delving into pedals.
Been loving the pedal on the left, it's essentially a Ram's Head Big Muff clone without the scoop.

Never really been a fan of fuzz or distortion. I've always been an overdrive kind of guy. This thing is essentially 2 TS-9 pedals in one case.
Just saying a blanket statement about pedals not being good with solid state amplifiers is dumb. The Spider is a piece of shit though, don't get me wrong.
Sounded pretty great with a Big Muff, not Bassman great, but good stuff.
I rarely use the harmony function on it. usually just a low octave and a high octave. The shit that drew me in was the pitch shifting function on this beast. It's one of those sounds that when you're playing a show, people immediately wonder what the hell they just heard.
What would you recommend?

Well I plan on using a few pedals but I really like the sound on Funkadelic's "Maggot Brain". Im gonna take a guess that that is a clean tone? Im not experienced when it comes to identifying tones.
If you were the same person talking about a vox ac15, you could do it with that amp and a fuzz, wah, delay.
With a fuzz and wah you can get very close.

To be honest, the Digitech is really pretty good. I'm not a serious guitarist but I use it for everything, vocals, Hammond, etc. It has a great time-based effects and most of the distortions are really good... dat blues tube with low gain on the Hammond is fuken siqq!
The MD-2 is kinda crap. I've had it for years and don't like it so I'm selling it.

It's the best chorus I've used, it goes from lush and subtle to wild and seasick. The dimension knob adds a glitchy repeat effect.
It sounds wonderful on guitar, my piano, and it's pretty good with organs too.

If you're just playing in your room recording onto your PC, there is literally no reason not to buy their cheap clones. I wouldn't want one if I was a touring artist (plastic casing and stuff), but I have their Slow Motion pedal which is a clone of the Boss Slow Gear, except it cost me less than £20 and does exactly the same thing.
The Morley Power Wah fuzz from the 70's. you know, the giant chrome one that plugged directly into the wall?
I friggin loved mine, right up until the transformer blew up and killed it.
The fuzz on it sucked, but pair it with a swollen pickle and a Rickenbacker Bass, and the thing was naaaasty.
