100 Essential Prog albums v1.0.jpg
2MB, 2180x2360px
What have you been listening to?
What are your favorites?

Go to http://www.random.org/
Choose a number from 0 to 99
Tell me your number and I'll try to give you a sample and a DL link of the corresponding album.

Remember to share and listen to other's people stuff too!

>What is Prog?
Prog is a genre of music characterized by multi-sectional songs with complex instrumentals and odd time signatures/harmonies. Feel free to post anything that fits with the description!

Feel free to post Non-Prog stuff too if you want, from Tibetan Throat Singing to Madonna's latest single. Just remember that these threads are Prog focused (but not restricted).

Babia - Oriente/Occidente (1981)
>Progressive Jazz Folk with Traditional Indian instrumentation.
>Perfect for those comfy summer days here in the Southern Hemisphere.
>Album cover should be orange

(At 2:30 is where it gets better)

Sorry, should be Hard instead of Punk
>>
>>51261622
This. That chart is starting to look alright. Krautrock stuff is finally on there, there's a bit less emphasis on modern bands but there's no need for the genre thing.
>>
>>51261699
>less emphasis on modern bands
Really? Half of the stuff there is Post-70s

>but there's no need for the genre thing
Why not?
>>
>>51261738
By modern I more meant released within the last 10 years. It's hard to call anything released so recently essential because it's not had time to have an impact or possibly fade into obscurity.

>Why not?
It's not really adding much to the chart. As >>51261622
said some of the labels aren't really accurate. Describing something as "experiemtnal" doesn't really mean much, Labeling somethign like 7 idiots as fusion implies jazz fusion a la herbie hancock or Miles Davis, describing something like 2112 as "heavy imples metal which it isn't, Tubular Bells as minimalism implies Philip Glass/ Steve Reichesque stuff.
It's just a mess to get it right and it's gonna cause contention.

I've just listened to new Lunatic Soul album, fucking amazing, easily my new AOTY

http://prog.teamrock.com/news/2014-10-10/lunatic-soul-stream-flashlight-beam-in-full
>>
>>51261952
Well, as I see it, modern essentials would be more like having a unique style or something like that.

What should Larks Tongues be labeled instead?

>Labeling somethign like 7 idiots as fusion implies jazz fusion
Yeah, I know. But I couldn't find a better word.

You are right about 2112, it should probably be Hard.
And I labeled Tubular Bells as minimalism because it sort of fits, and there where to many albums labeled as Symphonic.

Also, the idea of the labels is not to be exact, but work to get yourself and idea on how the album is going to be.

Has there ever been a better Progressive Pop/New Wave song as Jordan Rudess' Listen to the Voice?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-nob1J-pUs
Starts as a pretty cacthy song, but turns into an Epic in less than 3 minutes!

Not really Prog, but I want to share it anyways.

Storm & Stress - Storm & Stress
>Experimental Rock, Free Improvisation, Post-Rock. The band would try to forget what they were playing during the recording.

What's some modern prog (let's say, 1990-presnet) with lots of guitar solos?
>>
>>51262399
Pechiku!! by Sajjanu has three (amazing) solos through the album, but I can't think of anything else.
>>
>>51260978
I'm actually nearly okay with this. The balance of weird shit to accessible shit is levelling out now.

But definitely, definitely switch Misplaced Childhood with Clutching at Straws. I don't care if Misplaced is more "prog" because of the 40-minute song nature of it, Clutching is a better album in literally every way.

>>51261952
I agree to a certain extent but you can definitely hear some classics-to-be in the modern section, and even if they turn out to be forgotten in time, we can always change it.

All the styles are implied as forms of progressive rock though, so "fusion" implies a mix of prog and jazz fusion. "heavy" is basically only there because that's what PA calls it, and I kinda like it, because "hard" implies hard rock, which bands like PT or Sylvan have none of.

>>51262068
I actually thought it was really, really slow and actually kind of boring :/ I've liked pretty much everything else he's done so it was a bit disappointing
>>
Favorite Yes album, /prog/?
>>
>>51263098
yes a shit
>>
>>51263098
>>51263122
But having said that, I've managed to grab a free ticket to see them tomorrow and I'm hyped as fuck. Don't care how average they are seeing them live should be great.
>>
>>51263032
>Clutching is a better album in literally every way
Are you sure? Literally everywhere I look I see people voting Childhood as the best one.

>even if they turn out to be forgotten in time, we can always change it.
Exactly!

We can use Heavy and Hard at the same time though.

Do you have any other suggestions? I really want to make it as good as possible.

Also, everybody who likes CttE should listen to Per un Amico by Premiata Forneria Marconi.

>>51263098
Close to the Edge.
It's the only one that takes me to a higher level of emotion and even made me cry. Every other album I have heard so far is just very good Rock (with the exception of the first two songs from Yes' self titled, which are amazing).
>>
>>51263146
RYM has Clutching higher but Misplaced has more ratings to it gets higher in the chart. I suppose it doesn't really matter since Misplaced was the first I heard and it hooked me well enough, but Clutching at Straws is prog's emotional and lyrical masterpiece, and for me is the best album in the "classic" prog style by a bit of a margin
>>
>>51263186
Yeah, but I'm not talking about PA only. There's also Gnosis2000 and RYM, and they both rate it higher. I guess I should listen to both first though.

But do you think I should add something else?
>>
Hm, neat idea for a thread.

Btw, number was 37,

Listened to it yesterday, but it did nothing for me :/
>>
>>51264380
Eh that's cool. What are your favorite prog bands overall?
>>
How funny for this thread to pop up while I'm in a prog mood.
>>51264267
Got 41.
Sounds interesting I can't think of much prog that could be called Singer-songwriter.
I'll listen to it after I'm done Moving Pictures

In Search of the Lost Chord and Seventh Sojourn are also great albums by them.
