Lush - Spooky.jpg

>used to be a massive fan of Loveless
>my dad has a trendy friend who was really into the shoegaze and neo-psych scene in the 1990s
>hates MBV
>turns me onto Lush, Cocteau Twins, Echo and the Bunnymen, Sway, The Veldt, Slowdive
>become true dream pop/shoegaze patrician

What are your stories /mu/?
>>
slowdive is GOAT
>>
>>51180943
My dad got me into MBV, Galaxie, Verve, Ride, etc. He's a big music fan and it's cool.
Anyways check out the best shoegaze album of the year (AOTY for me):
www.youtube.com/watch?v=0n1sjqj356g
Also Whirr/Nothing split was okay, nothing interesting though
>>
>>51180943
no love for Ride?
>>
>>51180995
I like Ride but I've never really understood their association with shoegaze. They seem like just a solid, psych-leaning alternative rock band to me.
>>
how to get into Lush
>>
>>51181012
Gala (collects the early singles and EPs) -> Spooky > Split

Stop there. Split is usually considered their best but Gala and Spooky are definitely worth listening to.
>>
Has anyone tried mixing shoegazy guitar effects with more dance-oriented genres? I'd love to hear some shoegaze house, funk, disco or even something more African like soukous.

Shoegaze doo woop would be amazing too.
>>
>>51181040
there is a shoegaze vaporwave album i hear a while ago, I think it's the only one. sounds kick ass though
>>
>>51181040
Sweet Trip is a little like that
>>
>>51181106
I like Sweet Trip but glitchy IDM is hardly dance-oriented
>>
>>51181026
Thanks. You wouldnt have a FLAC link to any of them?
>>
>>51181118
I'm afraid not, sorry mate. It shouldn't be hard to find on Soulseek though. Lush is not a particularly obscure band.
>>
>>51181133
Cheers bud, downloading Gala now, got G500 on my HDD so will probably listen to that first though.
>>
What's Rides second best? loved the one with the ocean on the cover, name escapes me at the moment.
>>
I've been a shoegaze fan since I was a kid, and MBV is still one of the greatest bands ever

I understand expanding beyond the essentials once you become more familiar with a genre. I just don't understand how people can be so dismissive of MBV, I've yet to hear a good argument for MBV being anything less than great as far as shoegaze is concerned.

"Overrated" is not a good arguement.
>>
>>51181159
Nowhere is good, Going Blank Again is better though
>>
>>51181165
OP here, for the record I still like MBV, but I don't worship them like I did before. My dad's friend tends to prefer the smoother side of the shoegaze (i.e. Slowdive and Cocteau Twins) to the noisy side. He's also turned off by the circlejerking over Kevin Shields' guitar tone.
>>
>>51181179
Nowehere, that's it. Thanks will download that other one.
>>
>>51181206
But look at his guitar pedals
>>
Sway is great. One of my all-time favourite shoegaze bands.

>>
Super underrated:

>>
does this count as shoegaze? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lSpD7cd9Hg
>>
>>51181266
I'd say so yes. But I'd also argue that the Smashing Pumpkins, Deftones and The Chameleons are mostly shoegaze bands so idk
>>
>>51181301
chameleons no way bro 100 percent post punk or punk or whatever
>>
>>51180943
>need music to listen to while masturbating
>shoegaze always fits
>>
>>51181314
Strange Times was kind of dream poppy though
>>
>>51181314
how the fuck are they punk they use way too much reverb bruh
>>
>>51181319
Huh. Shoegaze is my study music. Souvlaki never fails to put me in a good mood.
>>
>>51181092
name?
>>
>>51181092
link? sounds interesting
>>
>>51181092
Is it Vinyl Williams?
>>
>>51181206
so he's a contrarian? He doesn't like them because of their fan base or whatever? sounds pretty stupid. Also there isn't anything else like thkw in terms of guitar tone, it's genuinely innovative
>>
>>51181143
just got to isn't a pity. the feels are real.
>>
More god-tier shoegaze.

When the fuck is the new Fleeting Joys album coming out? They have released anything since this single from 2012, and it's damn good...

Starflyer 59 are pretty good
check out;
>Americana
>Silver
>>
Is this song shoegaze? I know Blur is mainly a Britpop band, but this song... easily one of the best in their catalogue

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGXvzh8PzA4
>>
>>51181530
"Common musical elements of shoegazing consist of distortion, droning riffs and a "wall of sound" from noisy guitars. Typically, two distorted rhythm guitars are played together to give an amorphous quality to the sound. Although lead guitar riffs were often present, they were not the central focus of most shoegazing songs.

Vocals are typically subdued in volume and tone, but a strong sense of melody generally exists underneath the layers of guitars. However, lyrics are not emphasized, nor are vocals.[3] While the genres that influenced shoegazing often used drum machines, shoegazing more often features live drumming."

Sounds like shoegaze to me
