Album of the year, a general disappointment or just a nice unreleased novelty? Decide by listening to the album by yourself or reading what other anons have to say about it.

first for this record is shit

its pretty good, i really enjoy the sounds he uses, its got a real analog techno feel that is pretty unique to the time/scene. Solid 7/10

pretty much the definition of a For the Fans release, I can't see many casual rdj listeners overwhelmingly digging it and maybe only one or two proper techno listeners, however, I happen to be a fan so I'm chuffed to hear it. solid record, might actually prefer it to the caustic window comp
>>
The latter option.
I think I might give the analord series another listen too
>>
>>47586137
well i mean like he has specific noises that are kind of signature to that SAW I/AFX era of very bouncy analog noises

way more colourful than i was expecting

mumbly is a tune
>>
It's a nice unreleased novelty. It can't be the album of the year because it wasn't even meant to be released. It isn't a disappointment because it wasn't made to please anybody.
As for my anonymous and lowly opinion I love it because I am an RDJ fanboy.

It's like the missing link between Classics and SAW 85-92. I think it would have been a classic if it was released when he made it
>>
>>47586236
don't know about that,it is good though, mumbly in particular
>>
part of me thinks RDJ intentionally fucked up some of the tracks on the record

the Muttley live sample sounds better than the actual Muttley for some reason

I'm not sure AOTY, but it's a great release. It doesn't sound totally dated, but definitely RDJ at an different period than where he's at now.

I like it though. Kinda like a lost stepping stone in how he got to where he did.

And most every track is really enjoyable. I'd love if this got a bit more popular with the EDM crowd and we saw a bit more ravey style stuff like this slipping into the current EDM scene
>>
How anyone can call anything other than Fingertrips the best track on here is beyond me.

I'm just happy to hear some original music from RDJ
>>

>>47588805
Well, it was ripped by that "pro studio" and then sent to Rephlex for final quality control. It's hard to say who's to blame for the clipping, but either way, it's at least listenable. Only archivists should be angry about this rip, and even then, only on a technical level. The clipping isn't even that bad.

>>47588861
This isn't a non-release, no matter what anyone says. The $67k this raked in on Kickstarter is essentially $67k raked in on sales of the digital rip. He's entitled to 100% of that since he made the music. Maybe more like 95% since he didn't have to do the work to distribute it, but whatever the case, you get the point. Of course, he wouldn't even be getting that much because the whole purpose of the Kickstarter was to raise $9,300 which was the original seller's negotiated asking price. This is a free market - that seller could ask however much he wanted. And this auction works in the same way too - people will pay whatever they are willing for the record. In fact, they may even decide to pay MORE with the knowledge that half of the proceeds go to charity.

Think about it for more than thirty seconds. It seems obscene at first (and to be honest, I think it is because I don't believe in money for digital goods, but not everyone subscribes to that philosophy) but this isn't the crime of the century.
>>
So why doesn't James want to release all the <2000 songs he hasn't released so far?
>>
>>47589042
he is releasing stuff under unknown pseudonyms, he's prolly just bothered by the fame and pressure he's got. look at how the more casual fans are receiving this release, they think its crap cos they only want masterpieces. rich doesnt want to make masterpieces, he wants to make the music he likes. unfortunately that doesnt always sell or bode well critically

>>

>>
>>47589140
tbh was expecting more banging techno similar to the Analogue Bubblebaths and stuff like CJ Bolland etcetera

only stomper meets that criteria unfortunately
>>
>>47589168
The audio files themselves are clipped. It's highly unlikely that the clipping was natural and the soundwave just appears that way when amplified to its highest level without further damage. It's hard to describe, but I am 99.9% sure this is clipping from the transfer/post-processing.
>>
Man I'm on the first track and I'm LOVING it already. So pretty
>>
>>47589123
they'll milk it all posthumously btw so don't worry you're missing out, in a sense its kind of clever though cause people end up scouring releases to find rdj and in the process end up helping out a load of uncommercial artists and getting into an otherwise quiet area of music once they realize how much good shit there is
>>
>>47589228

That's fair enough if that's what you wanted from it. I liked Fingertrips, Airflow, 101 Rainbows and Squidge in the Fridge, those had a kind of SAW-ish quality to them, Rainbows was actually cast off from SAW85-92 according to the Paradinas rundown
>>
>>47589228
I was surprised to find so much AB4/5-ish (Flutey), SAW 85-92-ish (Squidge), Polygon Window-ish (Fingry and, to some extent, Fingertrips), and even Mike & Rich/GAK-ish (Jazzphase) stuff on this. Not too many of these tracks are clearly "Caustic Window" in style. I wonder if that's part of the reason it was shelved. The main reason was that Rephlex wanted to start releasing more records by artists other than RDJ, so it wasn't necessarily quality concerns about the material at all, but it could have been in part.
>>
>>47589035
i'm not saying its a crime, i'm saying its bullshit. the whole thing is bullshit.
if you want to release an album, release an album. keep in mind, this was to raise money for a vinyl rip, not to distribute the actual music. james didn't authorize use of the masters. the whole thing is a cash grab, no other way to look at it.
>>
>>47589042
more like <2000 albums, the dude is more prolific than merzbow and lil b combined
>>
>>47589497
The only reason it's a cash grab (in my opinion) is because they basically sold digital copies of the music. I don't believe in money for digital media. Had they agreed to press the album on physical media and had that be what people were paying for, I'd be 100% okay with this.

there's an iOS, android and even a blackberry app for mega
there's also extensions for firefox and chrome that make it run better
so yea, you have no excuse for it not to work

>you have no excuse for it not to work
why are you spending your time being an ass? someone uploaded it for me. chill the fuck out, spergtron.

how does my inability to use mega affect you?
>>
>>47590788
This place needs it. Severely.
>>
>>47590788

no it's really not elitism
it's you being outmoded and asking for spoonfeeding
>>
>>47590865
that wasn't me

I wasn't asking for spoonfeeding, I was asking for a fucking link. doesn't affect you, stop being an ass.

was intended to be on saw 85-92 originally. that wouldnt have worked at all but you can see it comes from the same artistic stirring pot
>>
101 Rainbows and Squidge in the Fridge are GOAT tier
>>
>>47592554
Squidge is totally SAW material too if you think about it. Just listen to the drums.

>>47592599
You mean Fingertrips and Phlaps.
>>
>>47592654
yeah definitely the latter parts of the track the way the hi-hats are reverbing themselves space in the mix is total saw but the piano riff is just corny as fuck, would've killed the mood
>>
>>47592684
Probably why it wasn't on SAW, really. I agree, everything else is great except the piano.
>>
>>47592654

I did forget Fingertrips, also GOAT. I wasn't so keen on Phlaps on first listen but it's definitely growing on me, one of the more aggressive sounding RDJ tunes I can think of, it sort of reminds me of Ventolin in some respects

>>47593015
iunno, its fine, it just seems like a standard track/experiment he probably made in one sitting
>>
>>47592962
what does it matter
>>
Well it's obvious why it was never released. It would have been really odd to release something like this *after*

>Both SAWs
>SOSW
>All the other CW stuff

It sounds very early/amateur to me (in a cutesy way) - still experimenting with different sounds, seeing what fits, etc. Doesn't sound like he'd mastered it yet, but he was on his way.

Definitely something for the fans, especially those who have been following RDJ ever since he started.
