Good artists above 85% on the Obscurometer.
Good luck friends.
HTT is better than your favorite band though
I must be a pretty gosh darn good artis then.
Please feel free to tell me what you think!
I decided to type in some artists that everybody obviously knows exist... I was surprised by some things.
Apparently, Deadmau5 is more obscure than Justice, and KISS is more obscure than Metallica... who are more obscure than Nirvana.
How the fuck does this list even work?
>What formula is used to find an artist's obscurity?
>Finding the obscurity of an artist is not a trivial task, if one means for the number to be meaningful. The method used by The Obscurometer defines obscurity so that it has some desired properties: the obscurities must range between 0 and 1 (so as to have meaning as a percentage); and the probability distribution function of the obscurities of users should look roughly like a normal distribution (most people are average, fewer people at the extremes). The number of listeners an artist has is well fit by a Pareto distribution. The distribution of listeners is fit with a Pareto distribution, and then that fit is used to map the values to the desired distributions.
maybe somebody who isn't as tired and/or dumb as i am can figure that out but there's something straight from the site
It's not really that hard because the type of people who listen to good music don't usually use last.fm
I mean these guys released one of the most important Krautrock albums and they have a 95%
Using the more elaborate Foetus names is sort of cheating. Foetus Art Terrorism, SFOtW etc are all auto "corrected" by last.fm to Foetus so of course the full names will seem more obscure nased on listener count.
Their album "Over, Again" is one of my favorites of 2013
Yup, incredible international music is as always above 85%.
The Bitch Boys (Slovenia)
Kafabindunya (Turkey) http://obscurometer.com/artist/kafabind%25C3%25BCnya
Teitur Lassen (Faroe Islands)
And this is cheating but if you have time to listen to one of these only, choose this.
80.1%, but waaaaaay too obscure in America for the quality of the music they make.
Kid Wise's overall obscurity level is... 92.6%
Check out their earlier stuff at seacats.bandcamp.com
They are releasing THE BOX in less than a week!
if you're into beats, this guy
>Has videos with over 6 million views
Closest I can find.
Pretty cool band actually, jazzy folk with mathy time signatures
Whose dick do I have to suck to make you people listen to this guy?
>mfw one of the most obscure artists is a K-Pop singer
Because it's not an accurate reflection of what's obscure. While Neutral Milk Hotel may be the centerpiece of indie-dom, claiming they are less obscure than t.A.T.u. (which they are on Last.fm, apparently) is downright nonsensical. The percentages aren't meaningful at all.
It's popularity in a demographic, that basically being /mu/. Different demographics are going to have different things being popular or unpopular. In Tokyo, Japan, people may be confused as to why Merzbow has a 75% obscurity when he's really popular. In contrast, teenage girls would be upset at the fact that Joy Division only has a 28% obscurity, but the thing that they're missing is that they're getting statistics from a demographic that doesn't exactly include them. People on Last.fm listen to a lot of NMH and less of t.a.t.u., so it makes sense.
Monopoly Child Star Searchers
Pacific Rat Temple Band
Dolphins Into The Future
Salaried Man Club
The GoodLuck Boys
Colored Mushroom And The Medicine Rocks
Inflatable Boy Clams
Waves Crashing Piano Chords
Some of mine include:
United Bible Studies
Agitated Radio Pilot
Edamame sounds very different from something with a 91.2% obscurity rating. I suggest that people who like ambient/downtempo and chill check it out.
Fuck you guys
>look up band me and my ex were really into
>don't know of anyone else who listens to them
> her newest last.fm i had no idea about is the one and only listener in database
> she doesnt have facebook so im stalking it now
Just when you think youre over them
The Obscurometer pisses me off, because it's not representative of a band's actual obscurity, it's representative of a very particular demographic and community. It forever gives me a bad score of my obscurity for the SOLE reason that between ages 17 and 18 (my Radiohead fanboy years), I accumulated SIGNIFICANTLY more Radiohead plays than any other artist could come close to.
Radiohead are a very popular band, but no way NEAR as mainstream as this site would have you believe. For comparison purposes:
>Radiohead has an obscurity of 3.7%
>Kayne West has an obscurity of 7.1%
>Oasis has an obscurity 12.3%
>Madonna has an obscurity of 16.4%
>Nickelback has an obscurity of 18.0%
>The Cure has an obscurity of 18.2%
If you think any one of those bands is actually more obscure than Radiohead then oh I am laffin
And that's my problem with this site.
think of all the people who scrobble their shitty solo recordings or their friend's garbage demos
or the people who set up detailed Last.FM pages for their bands but never gain any fans
this, for 86.6 %
Couldn't really believe it either
