Listen to a lot of up-and-coming underground, modern classical and experimental music, you can probably combine ideas in an original fashion that haven't been done before if you can't think of something original yourself. Most musical movements evolved gradually.

-Learn basic jazz fundaments (chorus, Solo sections,trading fours, Rhytmn changes and basic blues harmony)
-Learn to play and sing major,melodic minor,harmonic minor modes and their arpeggios and inversions, pentatonic scales(major minor altered)
-Learn the cycle of fourths and fifths
-Always learn the melody of a tune first, then the harmony(by scale degrees)
-Memorize the harmony and melody of a tune and transcribe it in all 12 keys
-Listen to great jazz piano players comping


Most important tips
-Only transcribe solos you like
-When you sit at a bandstand you never know what is going to happen, so you better have ear training or you
-Use your music sheets to memorize once or twice BUT NEVER DEPEND ON THEM after you studied your piece
