There's a lot of discrepancy on Grubber's and Tempest's dynamic between this and the prequel book. In the book, they were paired together by the Storm King and worked together to steal the pearl from the hippogriffs. There he followed her lead but wasn't subservient to her.

They Gave the villains random Deus ex machina petrification grenades; They call them "obsidian orbs" in one of the pages of the novelization.

They're pure bullshit with no explanation in the book, and I seriously doubt they'll get an explanation in the movie either.

The more I read about this, the more I'm forced into the conclusion that this entire thing is a plot on Celestia's part. It's really the only way to rationalize the complete and total absence of anyone fighting back: Not only did she choose to not resist, she brought Luna and Cadance in on the plot too, stood down the guard, and told Discord to take a hike for a few weeks.

But why? What remote purpose could Celestia have for allowing Canterlot to be sacked?

Well, she actually tells us herself:
>"Go seek help from the Queen of the Hippogriffs!"

That's it. That's the actual goal of this whole charade: Coax the hippogriffs out from hiding in their underwater home by demonstrating that the Storm King is an ongoing threat they cannot hide from. There's a whole civilization whiling away its days underwater because they're to scared of Big Bad Mr Stormy, about to huff and puff and blow their house down. They can't just off the Storm King, the Hippogriffs are suffering from a kind of collective species-wide PTSD and will remain in hiding, waiting for the next threat.

So what does Celestia do? She sends a pony with a strong track record of convincing others to work with her after the Hippogriffs, in full knowledge - thanks to her foresight - that Twilight will encounter Skystar and convince them to come back out and see the Storm King's defeat firsthand. In the aftermath, Equestria comes out with yet another kingdom as an alliance, and some pirates who might otherwise be raiding Equestria in the future are now bonus friends as well.

These are nowhere to be seen in all the other material so far, I expected to see them in this book at least, if they're not here, they're probably not in the movie either and this is just promotional material.
