Tempest comes off as awfully less sympathetic and whiny than I thought she might. Every thing that went wrong in her life was resulted from Starlight/Moondancer tier misunderstandings and self-imposed exiles. She doesn't have much of a leg to stand on in wanting revenge on her own home land because they only failed to help her because she never gave them a chance, even the 'Appleloosa' scene was her own skewed visioning of things. If that's the point, cool, but it does make her seem like a bit of a melodramatic dumbass come movie.

I see the Malachite is here like in the comics, odds are growing that's going to be a thing in the movie after all. I just don't quite comprehend HOW they plan to be a threat to the princesses/ steal their magic at all from this and I get the feeling whatever answer is provided will be somewhat unsatisfactory. They make it seem like a Unicorn with a broken horn is somehow MORE powerful than one with an intact horn, possibly even an alicorn (wtf) because it's like they've got no filter but if you can ultimately control it no matter what then that seems like no weakness at all. If her sheer permanent surge thingy from the horn is how she proves to be a threat... eh. Kind of weak.

Besides that it was a cute book but after willfully destroying one nation (holy fuck what a fucking push over the Hippogrifs were) and now willfully betraying her own for power and jealousy I'm finding it hard to root for Tempest.

Storm King was still a beast though, he's gonna be a fun character.

Have to agree with your first point. If we got some depictions of her being bullied to the point where it became a Catalyst for her Departure in Equestria. I could rationalize it but it's not a good look for her.

I also have issues with continuity too. Because if she is as old as we're lead to believe in the movie then there is no way that Luna or Cadence would have been royalty in Equestria.

Also, Cadence may have been royalty as early as Twilight's foalhood, but certainly Luna would have still been in the moon

So Tempest is jealous of Twilight getting what she dreamed of having? I'm getting some Sunset Shimmer vibes here? Unless her development has an interesting twist, she'll fall short as a character, since the ground she's threading has already been travelled by another, and very well. Tempest has some very high expectations to reach, it will be very, very difficult for her to meet them and become what can be called a fan favorite.

Timeline Time!

Early off, when Tempest is aspiring to Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns, it establishes that Luna has returned and Cadance has taken over ruling the Crystal Empire, which sets the start of the book at the very least after the season 3 premiere. I thought that was a continuity error at the time, but the story really reads like only a year, if that, has passed since Tempest's friends left for the academy. There' not much to work with there, as piecing together how many years have passe din mainline MLP is a difficult task on its own, but it does make Tempest seem far younger than I ever would've guessed. She must be younger than Twilight, which i wouldn't have suspected ever.

I'm actually more bothered about the fact that this means the hippogriffs haven't even been seaponies for very long. Did they build their whole fancy kingdom in a year? Or had they just been working on it already? I mean, if a shapeshifting relic is your national treasure, you'd probably use it for something, right?

I thought it was establishd that they didn't even know Tirek was out until Twilight's Kingdom. As for Starlight, I don't see why you'd expect them to think there was something to stop then. Most of th evillage seemed legitimately happy, and Luna mostly calms nightmares and helps ponies make good decisions based on their reflections. But if she hopped in a dream where a pony was fighting a giant squid, she probably wouldn't think that pony was actually dealing with giant squids in the waking world.

My point being, I don't think Luna helping other ponies is applicable. We don't even know if there's a range on her abilities either. And if a pony has a nocturnal schedule, does that mean it's dreams just forever go unmonitored? Do more stressful dreams call out to Luna, or does she just sift through them, searching for ones that seme to warrant attention? Not really enough information to make any conclusions using Luna's dream scrying as evidence.

So I guess the whole prequel comic thing is kind of pointless because the MacGuffin the whole thing focuses on just gets crushed by the Storm King...despite him being shown to be wanting it the whole time and explicitly not believing in bad luck.

I wonder if something happens in the Capper issue. Anderson DID claim that they used his Tempest Shadow script to write this but I'm not sure.

So many people praising this shit. While i'll admit I was immediately hooked by the writing style compared to Berrrow or Vogel's recent trash, I stopped reading immediately after reading how she lost her horn. I was willing to forgive the Cadence timeline since I know the people doing this stuff don't watch the show, but to make such an uninspired nonsensical backstory for losing her horn is pathetic. I had my kindle out and ready for a long reading session as well.

I really hope and pray that this was entirely on the writer and McCarthy had no part in this. That being said, it's disappointing that this means we don't actually get an explanation for her broken horn in the movie. Oh well, maybe if I'm in a better mood tommorow I'll give it another shot considering everyone's praise.

Earth ponies are plenty powerful. But it seems to be Applejack's fault that everyone assumes that they're shit.

I've read the book. I was expecting garbage, but it turned out pretty good, I liked the writing. I also weren't on the lookout for continuity errors and was more concerned about Tempest's characterization. I dare say she's shaping up to be an okay villain with a passable excuse (better than Glim Glam's), though from everything I've seen and read of the Storm King so far, he's looking like a more interesting character than the edgehorse. He just wants to conquer shit and isn't a terrible boss to his underlings.

Just read it. Pretty good, better than I expected. The only thing that was kinda retarded was the "NO ONE can enter the Hippogriff city ever... OK, you can, come on in", and the Storm King destroying the stone was a letdown, I hope it'll be explained in the comics. But other than that I enjoyed it.

If Tempest is young here (given the age of any unicorn can be anywhere from human years (15-25+) to Magic Years (1000+)) 1 we know that relatively speaking Twilight is quite a young thing. Before she came to Ponyville, there was no Luna that controlled the Moon and there was absolutely no Crystal Empire to which Cadance ruled. Taken in to acount if Luna still controlled the Moon, then we would date this over 1000 years ago. If that was the case then Crystal Empire would be under the rule of Sombra. If the Crystal Empire was ruled by Cadance, well that would put this after Twillight would of came to Ponyville and if that was the case, well Tempest is a very young filly.

The timeline is completely fucked. The book opens somewhere after A Canterlot Wedding and before Magical Mystery Cure with Tempest as a foal, then many months and "moons" pass, she grows up, leaves, has the couple weeks long journey, comes back and Twilight is a princess.
So either she's very young, we're talking like CMC levels of young, or her journey actually took years, or S3 actually took enough years for her to grow up, or whoever was responsible for this just didn't give a fuck.

The time lines seem like they are just messed up here. From the way beginning of the story it mentioned three princesses which would be completely wrong if we are trying to piece together what we know from the trailers, and the show itself. (and this is all supposed to be canon so yeah)

Now as I read the whole story we have the motivation for the "attack" which we again also see in the trailer, and the time there after. Tempest is obviously an adult, most likely even older than Twilight Sparkle. The time of events is as you said Anon 789. Between the wedding and when Twilight becomes princess. Tempest wouldn't even of known that Cadance was the newest princess of the Crystal empire because she had already left Equestria. So yes, major flaw there. Though I wonder, there is one part that could hold up and that would be if Luna was still princess, that would put Tempest much older than Twilight but younger than Celestia and Luna. But that still doesn't quite add up as it seems that she left and traveled about with in perhaps years, not thousands of years. Eh I digress.

For Tempest, and her backstory. I sorta like the character. She is strong willed, cunning and a Temptress. (yeah I went there) Seriously she lies and manipulates to try and cozy up which makes her very deceitful. But she still has a conscience and is careful.

When she broke her horn, she was more embarrassed than anything more. This is why she hid but she still was with her friends. It was like a kid that was forced to wear glasses. Nothing much of it. But the climax of this story was at the point when her friend encouraged her to go out in the field and practice magic, to regain her spirits. Instead it almost got her friend killed when she turned parts of the forest to ash and burned the grass. Two things that made this the point of no return was that she felt herself a freak, but more so in her heart she saw herself as a threat with uncontrolled magic and saw the fear in her friends eyes.

She didn't want to hurt her friends and felt that it was best for her to leave (again if the timelines mentions she was young filly, where are the parent and what?)

She traveled far, and applelossa we learned she began to lie, why? Probably because she resented where she came from and wanted to bury the past. But she then picks this more as to "survive". Becoming necessary. When she meets the storm King she opens up a bit more but that is because they don't fear her but embrace her. In the attack of the Hippogryphs, she prefers to sneak in rather than use the army or brute force. She still has compassion. She looks back at the destruction and welts up inside. I really would like to see more.

Great character development, not so great writing. (Yes there is a big difference.)

Now Cadance was a princess before the wedding and before the return of the Crystal Empire, this was mentioned in the show. However she wasn't the princess of the Crystal Empire. The Empire only existed when Luna and Celestia were ruling, before Luna's banishment.

All you had to do was just exclude anything about the Crystal Empire and the story would have more sense.

But then you had to try and figure, how many years was Tempest wondering around Equestria and beyond before she came to meeting the Storm King? From Filly to Adult would mean years and years which I doubt very much and it is defiantly not thousands of years. I see more plausible that Tempest went from filly to teen rather than to adult, which probably by the time she reaches Canterlot, she may as well be an adult.

Thinking in human years, say you are 10 years old when you leave and you wonder for many moons (give or take several years lets say 5) So you get to the edge of the world and meet the storm king you are now 15 years old. Traveling back to Canterlot, the place you left, might as well say you are now 20 or so. You could probably tack on a few more years here and there as she did stay in that one town as a dish washer for a while. So at least that roughly sorta adds up.

Even so, Cadance still didn't take over the Empire till after it's return which was after Luna's. Funny thing the show never really mentioned how Cadance became Alicorn or if she ruled anything before then. All we know is that she was Twilights foalsitter and the Princess of Love.

Come to think of it, she was a teenager then and Princess. oh boy.

The book still seems to not get the time line right and seeing how short the books is, skips allot in time frames and details. It makes me wonder how much better it would of been if the author slowed down a bit and actually wrote more.I liked the character building but it just seemed like the whole thing was kinda rushed.
