I like the clearly restrained writing that they had to do. Along with LoM I think Hasbro having stricter rules for IDW has really helped.
Price still seems to struggle with Capper though, which makes me nervous for next month's prequel.

I misread that as 'Tempest Shadow-a Unicorn' and got confused as to why they would name her that.
Anyway, story was pretty good. I can't shake the feeling that they're all just appetizers for the movie and aren't going to get any more filling than this.

8/10 by itself, and I'm liking where things are going thus far. Considering this is a prequel (and if one has read the recent Ted Anderson interview), the characters obviously have to end up in a certain position that matches where they are at the beginning of the film, but it's interesting to see HOW they get there.
Andy Price is clearly more accustomed to drawing ponies, though; some characters' faces look odd, and Capper looks almost expressionless most of the time. Some of Celaeno's expressions and exaggerated reactions are pretty funny.
I wonder how this subplot with the Misfortune Malachite is gonna end, because it's starting to feel like a pointless McGuffin.

"Celaeno" is literally the name of a harpy from Greek myths. But it could also just be a thematic individual name with no reflection on the species itself.
For what it's worth, the toy descriptions refer to her crew as the "Parrot Pirates." That's capitalised, though, so it could be a cutesy group name and (again) not the sole indication of their species.

Sometimes it's noticeable that these characters are new to Price, for example, in >>30596824 Celaeno looks great on the left panel, but her head looks weird in the second panel on the right, her beak should be much smaller. It's not much of a problem, but it's there. I'm really curious to see the issues drawn by Fleecs, lately I've been liking his comics more than ones drawn by Price, it'll be interesting to see how how both artists' non-pony characters compare to each other.

5/10, it's really cool seeing more races from far off lands but the story is still a bit dull.
The darkness monster is puzzling, I don't know what to make of Strife. We've seen these things before with Nightmare Rarity. They're not really menacing but they're supposedly tied to the concepts of evil, darkness, and corruption. But then they're just dumb booger monsters that I can't take seriously. What's their end game?
