you either read plentiful of other stories just to get to know the characters or just create your own OC.
If you create your own OCs- people cannot relate to them. without introducing them from the beginning. if you do that , it would take plentiful amount of time and drag your story away from the main plot.
The readers might lose interest midway and start skim reading ...or just ignore it as a whole.

That's one of the major issues I got when writing for bats here.
the other issue is

>not knowing the headcanons.
I mean do all bats eat fruits ?
are there vampire bats ?
do they live inside caves or in their own city
whats abilities do they have other than flying ?
..etc ...etc
I learned the answer to most of these questions after 1 year of lurking.
but these are the things that writers must know before writing a bat story.

Headcannons more as who is this character in love with or friends with, who does this character know beforehand and who does it not know, does Hollow Shades look like his or that or are the businesses set in what kind of way, if I say the bakery is across from the fruit shop is it ok, what if three other stories have it across the gym instead, is there an aspect to this character my oc is interacting with that makes their interaction clash with the original story of that other character and makes it appear out of character or as an alternate version of said bat pony oc, if I decide to do somehing like this abotu current events, but most older stories do it the other way without my knowing, does it make my own story unfit for the whole bat pony setting because of it with me none the wiser etc
