What did you do to git gud today?
>>
Dear Drawfag Improvement Thread,

I want to play around with my art style, but I'm finding it really hard to get away from using thick lines.
Why is it so much easier to sketch using really thick lines? Why does drawing with thin lines feel so much harder?

Love,
Anon
>>
>>30557514
Because you need to git gud. Thicker lines just hide your inaccuracy to place them.
>>
When choosing a tablet size, should I just measure how big my largest stroke is on paper?
>>
Why is Rarity such a super huge ultra slut?
>>
>>30557898
yeah, you should decide based on comfortablility, something that makes you use your arm instead of your wrist.
>>
>>30558072
Okay, my longest curves are about 3½" long, and my ponies are about 6" by 6¾".
>>
>>30557898

I have a 5x8ish tablet and I only use about 3x3 inches of the middle of it. I use my arm to draw but i've never felt the need to very long strokes since I can zoom in and out.
>>
>>30557139
Lots of circles and boxes during slow hours on the job.
>>
Watch out for bad tutorials and bad anatomy

In particular, if the tutorial has the pony's elbow dangling below the torso, it's bad.
>>
What's the difference between the Intuos Draw, Art, et cetera?
>>
The shoulder is at the middle of the torso, the elbow touches the bottom of the torso. It does not dangle below the torso.
>>
>>30561481
The bundled software. I can't remember which is which, but one comes with Manga Studio, another comes with ArtRage, and so on.
>>
>>30561496
Does the software make much of a difference?
>>
>>30561543
No. Every year on sale season you can get either Manga Studio or ArtRage or whatever for $15. Manga Studio is for line work, ArtRage is for painting (even though I use ArtRage exclusively because I hate it when software "corrects" my lines by smoothing them)

Just keep drawing the eyes over and over while moving small bits around. Make each drawing slightly different from the last. Because right now they don't really look good.

Don't work on the head or anything, just keep doing the eyes, specifically one eye until it looks good, and then do both eyes once you're set on the shape.

I like it, but the legs need work like other anon said. See pic. Since you're going for more cartoony style (even moreso than the show) it's a good reference pic. (It's not as good if you're doing a slightly more realistic style)

jfc tell me about it. I used to draw almost daily from about 2012-2014. Then I graduated and joined """the real world""" and w/ my current job+commute I only have about 3 hours a day that are "free" and that doesn't include dinner. Into those 3 hours I have to squeeze dinner, hanging out with one/some of my very few remaining IRL friends, doing and trying to do literally any other thing I used to do as a hobby (vidya etc). So basically I didn't draw for like 2 years from 2014-2016. This year I made a new years resolution i know i know to start drawing again, and I've kinda kept up with it. But i fucking suck now. Can't even draw pony legs correctly, I have to keep erasing and looking at refs, whereas before I could draw a simple side view pony in like 10 seconds, and more importantly didn't need to use refs. I can't even draw any of the mane 6's hair without looking at a ref anymore.

Reposting picture from another thread.

I was wondering how I'd go about coloring something like this, or maybe adding shading to it. So far it feels plain to me and I want to give it a little more life. What would be the best way to go about doing this? Maybe adding in extra detail in the white space or doing some rough shading, or should I go with a simple low opacity brush coloring session? Any and all suggestions welcome.

Alright, so working from the refrence I made that received no real critique in over 24 hours I made this. Anyone want to say anything before I finalize this?

Failing that does anyone know places I could go to get critique on pony drawings?

Posted the hard to see version by accident, so reposting for your pleasure.
>>
>>30603732
Maybe if you posted a smaller image with more visible lines and maybe some guidelines too, that would help a bunch.
>hurr durr, here's my reference guise!
>and it's just a fucking picture of a pony

Oh and it's shit btw, work on your skill before you work on creating reference images. Everything is fucking flat. There's no definition to her mane or tail, they look like cardboard cut-outs. Ears are too small. Wing positioning is too close to the spine and too far down her back. There's no ass definition. Did I mention how the tail looks fake and flat? That too. It looks like she's sitting on paper, that's the flattest fucking pillow I've seen. What exactly is she looking at and what is it on? Is that a table or an easel? Because there's 0 fucking perspective.

I'm not sure if you should keep practicing to get better or just stop drawing altogether, but you're bad.

Thank you.

I'm serious, thanks. A very critical response is better than no response at all. The only reason I'm being snippy about it is because the last four times I've tried to get some kind of critisim or critique from this place I've gotten no responses besides "fix your image" and trust me, I get that my pictures are shit, but trust me when I say the one I just posted took a lot of effort to look as good as it did. It's another thing I'm trying to improve on.

Does anyone have any tips on how to make the mane and tail not look like cardboard cut-outs? I think I can at least improve on the other things with a redraw, but that's something I've legitimatley struggled with.

And for the record, I had to make that refrence because I couldn't find anything close to what I was going for from the show. I have other character references and stuff, just not sitting from behind like that. Pic related. That's why I asked for critique on it before I went forward.

>>30603769
But not in my case, apparently.

Oh, and as a general question, what is an acceptable file-size for this thread where people won't yell at me for posting? That is if you guys don't just want me to leave and never come back, which is totally an option if nobody wants to put up with me, I guess.
>>
>>30603857
>what is an acceptable file-size for this thread where people won't yell at me for posting
Keep the height under 1080px. The best are smaller, so like 800x800 is good enough to get the point across. Large files are annoying and not everyone has the setting to make them scale to your screen size on.

Alrighty then, I played with some stuff on this sheet trying to fix the things you pointed out, as well as making some adjustments to other things I noticed on my own after posting >>30603732 and since I was planing on redrawing it all on another sheet anyway I figured I would hardline everything to see how it would look.

Now, I think I might have to play with the positioning and planing of the wings as well as the fluting of the feathers a bit still, though other than that did I at least make improvements on everything?

Besides that, just in general, are there any other issues anyone wants to point out (besides my inability to draw straight curves/lines which I would prefer us not to talk about trying to get better at that I swear)?

Oh, and again, any tips/resources specifically on how to make manes/tails not look shit would be appreciated. I tried my best to make them look better, but I'm still having problems with it.

Is it at all possible to draw well with a mouse? I used to be pretty good with a pencil but living in the third world doesn't give me an easy way to digitize my art. Anyone has any advice on that?
>>
>>30625037
How third world are you talking? I'm pretty sure you can find a cheap tablet at one of the larger computer/electronics store a mall. I got my wacom for around $100, which isn't that much if you save up a little for a couple of months. And in response to your question, yes you can though I don't recommend it.
>>
>>30625044
I'm talking Brazil-during-a-major-recession third world. Saving up is definitely an option, though.

I remember seeing something about learning how to draw through vector graphics instead of ghettoing it up with a mouse being a better alternative. I do have some photoshop experience because I used to do /gd/ as a hobby, though the vector tools in that are pretty poor.

They're the same, but the second one has 3 side buttons for mapping whatever commands you want.
Bigger tablets just have more range, more buttons, and then useless features like flipping your pen upside down for an eraser tool. However those tablets that are like minicomputers are supreme over all, but they're like $2000+.

Have you ever thought about trying to draw without a guideline? Yours are more detailed than others, so it's interesting seeing the contrast between you and an artist who just draws the face without more than just a circle.
Also if you started to focus on perspective more, it would help. Definitely set up your vanishing points to line your draw to the foreground/background. It would help more.

You're improving, so that's nice. Keep it up.

You need to work on your legs/hooves. They just don't have a good style to them, and look nothing like the show. Also, your consistency in guidelines are off.
First image:
-The circles are pretty sloppy and the divisions aren't straight.
-Ears are too small.
-Horn is too short.

If you fixed these things from this point onward, your drawings will definitely show more improvement. Good luck.

Her hair is extremely flat, not just lacking depth, but where it comes out of her skull, it's too thin.

>>30663250
Those guidelines for her hooves are crooked. They don't follow the proper plane. They look like they're tilted up. The shape of the hooves is fine(relative) but the guide's throw off the perspective.
Her pendant/amulet isn't symmetrical. The left side is bigger than the right even taking into account perspective.

As a rough estimate, I'd say about 90 minutes for the sketch, since I try to avoid chicken-scratch but that leads to erasing and redrawing most strokes until I get them right. Then about 30 minutes each for outlining and shading, mostly due to all the fiddly little bits like the millimeter-scale smaller stars in her cutie mark.

In total, about two and a half hours, but I could probably cut that in half with a drawing tablet and features like undo, zooming in, and transparency lock. That's a pretty rough estimate, though, because I tend to draw in between doing other things.

Her head is way too circular, it's like a perfect circle with one slight bump for a cheek. The eyes are too small, the muzzle is too small, chin is too round, just a bunch of stuff wrong. I would redline with what I would try to do, but then it wouldn't be your unique style anymore.

The eyes are the window to ones soul. You should try experimenting with your eyes a bit more, they seem a little lifeless. I suggest that you try to be a little more confident and comfortable when making your lines. Focus on refining the shape a bit more but do so while keeping your hold on the pencil as relaxed as you can. Keep at it and you'll improve a lot.

Lol, I'm in the same boat. Just use a harder lead pencil and try to relax your hold. If you have a softer grip that means your lines will be lighter, that means you can be more liberal with them. Your goal is to make fluid, natural looking lines. This is a fundamental thing that will help you in the long run.

You're drawing the horse's legs like human legs, but the legs of many hooved animals aren't all that muscular like ours are. After the shoulders and pectoral area of a horse, it's all joints and bones and tendons, so you could give them knobbly joints like they have irl or stylize and make them slender and spindly, tapering into the ankle. Try drawing a skeleton under there and see what looks good when you flesh it out a little.

Change your pointer speed if you're on windows. The reason why it's all jittery is because the dpi of your mouse is too low/high in comparison to the pointer speed in the OS. Slower is better, but not too slow, so you can still navigate the program's UI.

I'm no animator and I'm hardly an artist, but IMO the dick looks a little "soft" as it goes in. Like in squeezing it to a much narrower shape at the point of entry, it seems like it's much more pliant than an erect horse-dong should be. The stretch and squash probably doesn't help.

I reccomend switching to Pegasi practice instead of Unicorn Twilight since out of the 3 breeds the Pegasi have the more fun dynamic poses as compared to anything else. Especially RD.
Just try it. Don't draw Twilight for a month. Or draw her as an alicorn doing some poses.

Not that guy, but I'm one of the moderators, and I remember 1 of these people is Zimbabwe (so duh), 1 was banned for being a liar when asked about being banned from A DIFFERENT MLP chat for attempting to or actually scoring nudes of a minor (and trying to bribe their way back into the chat), and the other 2 people weren't banned by me, personally, as there are 9 people that can ban/kick members in the Improvement Chat, but at the time they were approved by most of the other mods/admins.

So if we/they want a chat that isn't full of total shitposters, then yeah, they're going to do that. If you're one of these four, you can try to bribe one of the 9 of us; can't say it'll work though.

You can use references, most people uses references. There's nothing wrong with using references.

The problem comes when you're just copying directly from your references ad nauseam when you've shown that you can do that without issue. At that point you're not learning anything, you're not improving, you're just wasting paper and time drawing things that someone already drew before.

The point of references is to make sure that you understand your subject so that you can figure out how to synthesize new content properly.

I feel like you're consistently missing the point of the critisim you're receiving here. I have watched your tag on derpibooru and I do see you try out some different poses and such, and that's a good thing, I've even commented directly about that, and you have improved significantly since you started.

That being said your progress is painfully slow becuase you seem very insistent on taking baby steps whenever you approach something new. Actually scratch that, you don't take steps, you crawl. It's legitimatley painful to watch at this point, I see someone who could have some potential who for the most part wastes it by drawing the same thing over and over and over again with only slight adjustments, never actually trying anything new, never pushing themselves significantly.

The most frustrating part is that there was a point where you were being much more creative and doing much more interesting stuff and really experimenting, working with unique poses and props like pic related as an example. I don't really follow this thread religiously, so I'm not sure what kind of response you got here for those drawings, but I thought they were really refreshing and I was really disappointed to see you go back to doing the same pose with the same pony from slightly different angles with slightly different light sources.

Do what you gotta do I guess, but watching you do this is frustrating...

Eyes are a bit strange. Not only in their general shape, but also in how her right eye seems to take up that entire side of her face. I can see that you're trying to do them slanted, but level out the right eye a bit at least. The right eye is the biggest problem here.

Try making the pupils smaller in relation to the iris. Right now the pupils take up 95% of the iris and in my opinion that makes it look weird. Also in general the eyes shouldn't go to the ears like that, though that again might just be a stylistic choice.

The horn is large and it does actually kind of look like something I saw once on bad dragon. Consider redrawing it unless you're particularly attached to that style.

Also adding a buttmark will make her look better. Its a thing.

It depends on how into the lewd thing I am for fap breaks to be necessary
>>
>>30695601
this. References are good, but dont simply copy your references, use them as a guide. Also yea you need to drastically loosen up your style. I've noticed your "construction lines" don't actually accomplish much. It's not like you're creating a technical illustration for an industrial design firm, you're creating an abstracted organic pony. Do quicker sketches, gesture drawings, spend less time etc. Don't be finicky about line quality because line quality doesn't even matter if you don't do proper mapping for the proportions.

Really take the time to do a high quantity of fast sketches that outline the character in different poses.

Don't allow yourself more than 20 minutes on each one and focus more on proportions rather than nitty gritty detail.

>>
>>30706682
Just because something is stylized doesn't mean that people dont have trouble learning it. And ponies can be hard to understand because their anatomy is different than ours, so figuring out how they work can be difficult

I find it difficult to fap to my own finished lewds, as I just get irritated by things that feel off or wrong, and by this point I'm usually desensitised to the still image itself. I edited your drawing and fixed the eye. I made it bigger, lower (use the distance from bottom of eye to chin for reference) rotated it ~10 degrees clockwise, and squished it slightly on vertical axis.
