I don't think this film will do that well, it will likely only succeed due to being extremely risk adverse.

This is probably the best film we could have expected from Hasbro.
There were probably several ideas that could have been better to us fans or been more successful in the box office or easier to market, but Hasbro wants to make money as cheaply and easily as possible and what we got reflects that.

I've just realized something. The first time I watched EqG, when the music started playing, I got really emotional. It was just a rip that I was watching on my computer, I didn't really give a fuck about the film, and the song was just a generic remix, but it hit me really hard to think that I was hearing the song of the show in a movie.
This movie will have a new rendition of the song. Played by an actual orchestra. It'll be in a real movie, a real pony movie. And I'll be hearing it in a theater. God, I fucking know that as soon as I hear the first "my little pony, my little pony, ah ah ah ah", I'm gonna start tearing up. And I can't wait.

They've been named countless times on this board.

First EQG had some of the best music in the whole series. RR had a larger amount of great music, but the most impressive pieces came from the first EQG.
EQG had a complete story to tell - from the start to finish - unlike RR and FG which had much plainer plots. And judging by the show standards it was a pretty decent story.
EQG had finally brought proper choreography into the series - only genuine degenerates didn't consider the cafeteria scene to be at least fun.
EQG allowed fans to relieve the nostalgic "first meeting" scenes between Mane 6.
I personally was deeply touched by EQG as it was a genuine love-letter from the MLP crew to the fandom. Humanization, opening, countless references through the movie, Derpy (who went missing due to the drama) - all of these were made for fans - not for the target audience. I loved every single moment of it.

EQG had received an insane amount of undeserved hate due to poor marketing and timing - people were hating it long before the release. The only piece of objective criticism the movie had received in the context of the show and the fandom was ">no hooves" because every single other "flaw" it had was present in the main show. People went the distance calling it a "high school movie" when the only thing that had to do with "high school movies" was the building - so desperate they were about thinking up new excuses for their unjustified hate.

Rainbow Rock, meanwhile, had a great marketing campaign, thus it was received in a much more positive mood, to begin with. The movie was great and had one of the best (if not the best) villains in the whole series. However, it wasted valuable time saying "this is a plothole, but we know it" which resulted in a very bland plotline were one to write a summary for it.

I have more respect for people who hate all the movies because of ">no hooves" than for people who say "EQG was shit, but RR was great".

I've just noticed that the shading isn't "better" in the German trailer, it's just that the extra shading isn't there at all. That, plus the fact that this scene >>30426061 proves that they did the German trailer first, makes me think that someone in Hasbro thinks that the movie looks better with the extra shading, and that's why they added it. And probably the final movie will look more like the US trailer than like the German trailer.

It's really disappointing, I think that the German version looks a million times better, I wish the movie was like that. It's unlikely, but I hope that having the two versions is some kind of weird A/B testing, and they are using the comments as feedback to decide whether or not to add the extra shading for the final render. That's what I thought at first, and that's definitely what happened with Trixie, that's why she looks absolutely awful. But the "extra" shading is much subtler in the other shots. If I had to bet, that's the shading they wanted to use. In the German trailer, the "extra" shading isn't there at all.

Look at pic related. There are shadows that are in both pics, but the shadow under the eyes simply isn't there in the German trailer. It's not that it's subtler, it's not that they used different export settings, it's that it's an extra shading that for some reason they added over the other shading. That's why I'm worried, it doesn't look good. The other shading is enough, I don't know why they added two different shadings.

The animation reminds me of early 2000s Disney / Dreamworks / Don Bluth and FUCK is it a good nostalgia to feel. the shadows arnt hand drawn, its generated by harmony. A lot of the shadows could have been the default shadows in the American one, and then completely removed in the German one. For example in the American one the lines on twilight hair has a bevel effect to them, which would have been the default of the entire head was passed through a bevel (whatever its called in the program) node, and they only later de-linked the lines later

This makes sense, and it's a relief. I know nothing about Harmony, and I thought that shadows had to be drawn separately. And of course, if they drew them, they wouldn't do it just to remove them later. But I just watched a couple of tutorials, and if I understood it correctly, you're right and those shitty drop shadows can be generated really easily, so maybe they were either a mistake, or just placeholder shadows from early stages, to make color tests or whatever. So it's probably true that they just fucked up (again) when they rendered the US trailer, those shadows aren't supposed to be there, and there's no reason to panic. I'm much less worried now desu.

Most people won't give a fuck about this, the file is fucking HUGE (2.5 GB), and it's not worth downloading because it isn't really that different (again, it's the exact same fucking video). I feel that the video could be compressed using x264 and a CRF of 18, the file would be much smaller (maybe about 100 MB, idk), and it'd still look better than the YouTube version. But I haven't tried to make it yet.
