Pretty much it was actually a comedic satire of how we all perceived the film to be rather than being a straight up fantasy film.

Many fans were pissed that the film pretty much shattered their hopes for something played straight or something exploring the lore, in addition many new elements were introduced that, while creative, shattered everyone's headcanons on what the world outside Equestria was like. Thinking that these elements were too wacky or bizarre to exist in the same world as Equestria, while others welcomed them.

The public audience saw this as a fun fantasy film and it was easy to market as an action-adventure comedy and since it delved quite a bit into self-parody, was able to keep most of its stigmas away from it.

I disagree with you in one aspect, Meghan McCarthy doesn't like her adventure stories being comedic for the most part and I feel they suffer in that regard.
