Anyone read the comics? I found Glimmer to be much more charming in them. I especially liked the way she decided to deal with Accord in FiM no. 50. She handles herself logically and doesn't jump on the whole "Friendship power solves this" train. Comic Glim is a good Glim.

But that's the thing, at the point Starlight asked, her and Maud weren't really "friends" at that point, rather two Ponies forced together by Pinkie Pie.
Friends do ask about each others hobbies, but at the same time, it seems no other Pony appears to have asked Maud about hers, rather finding the subject matter of Rocks a bit strange. Even the Main 6 couldn't really click with her as a result, though they did have different expectations meeting Maud.
Starlight, however, didn't seem as weirded out as other Ponies seem to be, and inquired about Maud's love of rocks, and why she did is is what I'm trying to understand

Starlight is so powerful she can actually challenge Twilight. But anyone with enough talent and dedication can just duel with magic. Only one pony was able to go past that, offer something more than what Starlight already had. And now she is vulnerable, she is weak, she doesn't know what to do because she's known nothing in life except bitterness and she expects it from everyone as well.

But she gets hugged. It's uncomfortable, it's unnerving, it's too forceful, it doesn't feel right. But only this was the right thing to do. Twilight, tearing down all her barriers and defences, going for her fragile and tender heart and embracing it. Forcing herself on Starlight she made sure that her pupil is accustomed to this, another pony's warmth and trust. Just like giving Starlight a new home and being her family, offering her to cast aside all her worries for one day and celebrate with friends, giving her that graduation mirror, worrying about her and Trixie but in the end bringing them together, she taught Starlight more than just friendship lessons. She showed her she is worth appreciating.

Starlight is not afraid now. Opening up, sharing feelings, being genuine, trusting others, willing to help - she learned it all. And in the beginning of it lies an uncomfortalbe and forceful hug. Or, rather, not the hug itself but the fact that nobody, including Starlight herself, would give it, except for the pony who knows how important it is.

I disagree. They may have been forced together at the beginning, but this happened well into the episode. At that point they were already getting along on their own, and had even decided to ditch Pinkie together in the scene before.

My question then would be to move on to how she managed to become loose friends by that point, in the sense that other Ponies hadn't been able to click with Maud.

Rocks as a matter were hard to get past, and Maud seemed to struggle to make friends, maybe because of it. Even the Main 6 had difficulty connecting with Maud, yet Starlight didn't seem to have too much issues.

This is basically answering the above. Of course I can understand that, but I thought their might have been something we've seen before, like an event or character trait (which is why I asked here) that would suggest why she wasn't as off-put by Rocks.

Yeah, funnily enough, as I recall, this is actually how she made friends with Trixie too. Making somewhat idle conversation. I suppose in this sense it spurred from Pinkie forcing them together though, since it doesn't seem like other Ponies have been too successful with Maud.

Do you think so? I see your points, but I still think the subject matter of Kites isn't weird, and I'm not sure she actually finds it weird. We've often seen Ponies fly kites. I think the only thing she might find weird is just how into Kites she is, which might explain a bit of hesitation as you say. Because it's not like she just like Kites, but she REALLY likes Kites.

And speaking of Kites, you think her other friends DO know of her fondness of them?
