Fill this chart out with artists that you like. It doesn't have to be neat or even filled out correctly.

Say something nice about them!

HARDMODE
Set a short term goal for yourself based on what you like most from one of the artists.

So, I followed Anon's advice on the old thread and this is what I managed to do
>>
>>30233305
Did you think about your life choices?
>>
>>30233326
Yes, and I realized it needed colors so I colorized it
>>
When do I know I've got the anatomy down?
When I can draw a pony in any pose, from any angle?
Any guides on perspective? I've got enough of
90 degrees side views.
>>
>>30233165
This is a hell of a chellenge.

The only influences I have are the guys who wrote the books I read (Villpu, Robertson and 3 more who I don't remember), a bunch of websites, videos and tutorials aswell as this thread and my art senpai.

There are two other things that come to mind:
James Gourney and some dutch dude that drew landscapes ages ago.

And for a goal... I would like to finish one of the pics I want to draw but to do that I need to get gud and to do that I need to stop being shit. So much for short term...
>>
>>30233178
What the fuck is this bullshit about sizes. Why would I put something so small in so big frame. I am a moron and don't get it.
>>
>>30233305
You know, looking back at it I really wonder how I did to butcher something that looked so simple to do
>>
>>30233305

Won't go over everything But:
>Belyukin
>Weistling
>Adamson
Those color contrasts. Fuck me they make me diamonds without fail every time. No matter how much I look at their work I fall in love all over again.

>KJG
Who doesn't suck this guy's dick?

>Leyendecker
I like how he adds so much more form to his stuff with how he renders clothes. The way he renders in general is very nice. Again, who doesn't suck this guys dick?

>Bouguereau
Crazy work ethic. Would paint THICC and scrape away whole parts of his shit if he wasn't feeling it.

>David Roberts
Actually don't like his paintings, but his under sketches have pretty crazy values and detail put into them.

>Schmid
His brush strokes are fucking pretty and he has crazy skill, not to mention his book is the only physical art book I own. Good shit.

Short term goal: Getting more comfy with rendering, but I want to go back and get more comfy with general lines and sketching and generally build more spatial sense as I do it. I feel like it’s barring a lot of creative freedom.
>>
>>30233872
Well thanks
>>
>>30233483
Basically you practice until you think it's fantastic and you'll plateau and realize you aren't as good as you want to be and then the cycle starts again. This isn't a bad thing as long as you're makin gains. Just go on youtube and google "drawing perspective " and you'll find something.
>>30233650
I've never done one of these, buuut basically, let's say your favorite artist you look up to is Bob McBobface. You would find your favorite piece and give it like, 3x3 boxes. And let's say another artist you enjoy uh Jane McJaneface, but you are only slightly inspired by her so you'd put a piece of hers in a 1x1. Honestly I'm not going to bother because it's too much cut and paste bullshit

Afh, I hope you realize that by posting in the mlpdrawingschool subreddit, you're not going to suddenly get mountains of praise for your six months of hard work. Despite everyone here on /mlp/ being mostly assholes all around, we HAVE been giving you legitimate critique. "Looks like engineering drawings," " now is the time to take some artistic liberties and experiment," etc., etc.
Only difference is that people on that subreddit *might* be slightly more polite. But you're still going to get the same advice.

Also, your picture with Twilight smelling the flower >>30241964
is by far your best so far. Keep trying different expression, but you have to stop relying on rigid guides.
>>
>>30258725
Exactly.
>>30254172
See how you fucked up hooves?
>>
>>30258725
also "engineering drawings" is not a good thing when you're drawing things that are supposed to be living and organic
>>
>>30258864
Yeah, the person on the subreddit who said that they meant "engineering drawings" as a good thing was just being overly polite. It's that type of faux kindness/flattery (which is very common on many MLP sites...) can result in bad advice. At least /mlp/ is blunt about it.

>>30271810
there's no such thing as finishing a picture/essay/thesis

there is only something the elderfolk in my family call the triple P: Pannaan Paska Pakettiin

for you language impaired folks, this means essentially "Wrap That Shit Up"

whatever you're working on, once you've reached the acceptable quality, keep tabs on how much you think it can be improved and how much effort and time and resources will be needed for that improvement¨

the longer you polish it the worse the potential quality vs effort cost relation will become

and at some point, although you could still fix a bit of this and that if you wanted to... you must make the decision to Wrap That Shit Up and call it done.
>>
>>30271810
I suppose publishing a picture that you feel is good enough to rarely touch again could be considered finishing it.
>>
Does anyone know if there is some sort of drawing practice collection with poners in various poses and facial expressions? It's kinda tedious to browse through 4chan and derpi etc. and look for not too complicated images.

Some of the tuts in the starting post are alright, but I feel I need more.

>is there such a thing as finishing a picture?

Things don't need to be perfect, they just need to feel perfect. When you're done with something try looking back at it the next few days and see if there's anything you'd like to change while working on other things. If you can look back at it with fresh eyes the next day, and the values, composition still feel maximum comfy based on your own tastes, it's done and you're gunna make it.

better
your skill level is great to be at because pretty much any improvement you make is a big one

here's a basic way to get into the hind legs

- rump + thigh + gaskin make a teardrop shape
- the front curve carries on a bit to make the corner of the hock
- a parallel of the back curve carries on to make the front line of the lower leg
- back line slightly deviates from athe front line's parallel to make the leggently flare out toward the bottom

>>
>>30297399
If you're viewing a cartoon pony from the side, the hind legs and forelegs should be on the same respective plane. Using a ruler would help

Also, take your time with lines. Feathering your lines is the best way. Take a few pieces of paper and try drawing a hundred circles until you get a feeling for pressure, and for your drawfag wrist and hand movements.
>>
>>30297399
Don't draw with your wrist but the whole arm instead. It makes the circles rounder.
>>
>>30300708
How do you not make your lines go all over the place? Or is that just practice?
>>
>>30300708
You can do it either way, it just depends on preference.
>>
>>30300722
Definitely practice.

And more practice.

Don't forget, more practice.

Practice so much that the word "practice" makes less and less sense and you lose your mind. Once that happens, you are an artist.

It's possible if you're the one holding someone, like at your chest level and looking down. But getting hugged yourself probably means a very limited field of view which still can be used if you make it clear what is even going on in the picture (so the viewer won't get confused by the view of someone's back or side of the head without context).

What size tablet would you guys suggest for a 17-inch monitor?
>>
>>30311451
Screen size is pretty irrelevant for tablet size. I recommend medium size at minimum for anyone. Probably don't buy a big/fancy one until you have drawn/painted enough to know that the investment won't go yo waste.
>>
>>30311502
I asked, because the question came up before and everyone said it depended on the monitor size.

About how big is "medium"?
>>
>>30311662
can't remember measurements but my medium Wacom is about three postcards/hands worth of drawing area, comfortably fits an A5 notebook

my hands are medium size, a bit small for a guy and quite large for a gal

if memory serves, sister's large is four to five postcards, closer to A4
>>
>>30311451
Just get a tablet of the same proportions and you're fine. It's a natural adaptation
>>
10
>>
>>30311662
It does depend on monitor size. My 17" laptop works great with a small tablet (Intuous small [aka new bamboo (aka older graphire)]). I also have a medium Intuous and they're almost the same size and it makes it hard to control what the fuck I'm doing
>>
>>30313834
I have the smallest wacom, I work on 23" monitor and everything is fine. I worked on an old 4:3 and it seemed to be fine too. I had to calibrate work space to match 4:3 ratio. I even pluged it to 10" tablet with windows. Was little weird but worked. I am kinda forced to have the smalles because I have little work space. But I think of changing to medium size.
>>
>>30313834

So wait, does the monitor size matter or not? I have bamboo and an old 19" monitor, thought about getting something bigger, it won't fuck me up if I'm used to that size or anything?

Shading with black will at best look boring and at worst kind of dirty in the majority of cases, normally you want to use darker colors instead.

The use of black is generally limited to ink techniques and black and white painting.

it's not possible to stand en pointe on anything other than a straight leg and they won't even let you practise it before you have the skill and strength to pull it off

but:
- you could have her slightly tipping over, i.e. standin on a straight leg but out of balance
- you can adjust the arms as you like, your original bend in the right arm shows insecurity but it was growing from her chest so I changed it
- you can lower the lifted leg closer to your original angle, but bear in mind that the leg should be turned so that its median line is pointed sidewards because that's essential

I still don't get it. Doesn't it still mean you're practically copying the thing? How do you actually learn something you can use in other drawings from this particular one you study?
And when it comes to referencing other art, if there are "good" and "bad" references how do I know which one is good if I myself don't know much about how it works properly in the first place (hence the need for reference)?
>>
>>30334446
>, if there are "good" and "bad" references how do I know which one is good if I myself don't know much about how it works properly in the first place (hence the need for reference)

You learn what a "good" or "bad" reference is over time. The more you draw, learn and study the more you come to realize what your tendencies and tastes in art are. There is such a thing as having "shitty" tastes though so it can be a delicate thing since this is all subjective. The best you can do is get critique and surround yourself with other artfags who will slap you on the wrist when you use a bad reference or draw something that looks like shit.

To me a "bad" reference can be something that is too stylized (the artist who incorporates a lot of their imagination and tastes or tend to break anatomy as part of their style). In this case it can be very detrimental to copy from another artist who stylizes too much because you can't get into their headspace and you dont know who their influences are. A "good" reference would be something that incorporates good anatomy, color, or perhaps another artist who DOES stylize a lot but its a style I admire a lot and want to attempt to emulate for study purposes. You can borrow from other artists when it comes to style but try your best not to be some bastardized copy of that artist because others will be able to tell (either through shitty anatomy, color choice/etc.) Believe me when I say that other artists can tell when you lack certain knowledge and are just being a copy of someone. Especially from another artist who is popular. Pull reference from multiple artists and acquire a variety of tastes.

Figure out what style you gravitate towards or what medium you like. Keep in mind this is a process that can take YEARS. In the mean time you can focus on drawing a lot and studying. You'll figure it out along the way if you just keep pushing.

What to do when the "why even bother" point is reached?

Realize that nothing in life matters and just do what's fun. You need to ask yourself why did you start drawing in the first place and compare those goals to what's important to you right now.

anon said regarding why you began drawing to begin with. A lot of times it takes self-reflection and figuring out what your tastes in art is. Think about the first time you saw an amazing illustration, how it made you feel, and what the subject matter was and revisit that. It'll take a person years before they even realize what they want out of art.

Personally I feel that it wasn't until this year (after 3 years of drawing) that I finally feel like i'm heading in the right direction. I'm figuring out what my tenancies are and the type of art I gravitate towards. The realization that there is more to this than just grinding out technical skill was just the beginning. I feel like I could spend many more years figuring out the artist I want to be. I'm okay with that and that's really the question you have to search an answer for: "Do I see myself doing this for the next 5-10 years?" It's not something you'll find the answer for right away. To me, personally, its a resounding "yes."

TL;DR

>keep fucking drawing
>keep looking at art
>draw more

The answers will come the more you draw.

think of the mane as a wig that sits on the head any way you feel is easiest to draw

think of the hair mass in the mane and the tail like solid pieces of bendy styrofoam with a fursuit cover

make jaggies and little wisps here and there because "that's what you do when you draw manes/tails"

shade with black, and as faintly and disballedly as you can muster

>legs

most people regard animals as being 4 legged; front tubes= ~arms, rear tubes = ~legs - ergo hind legs. The hind legs are going on a bit of a stretch, just compare the full length with the rest of the pon (or just the arms) and picture it standing, def gonna be in 'that' meme pose.

>coloring

hue changes in shading look good although some of the hard and soft shadows are just ok, not really sure what to make of the lighting.

it seems too many aspects of the drawing were generalized, like the drawing just fell into place and just sort of happened based on your skill level and understanding, which isn't bad at all. not sure if this is the case, but you probably could use a reference. if your drawing is completely based on habit then you're not taking time to reason other choices, drawing could be a lot better with small adjustments.

but yeah, you could probably have interpreted some of that, like, on your own.

tl:dr- add the tail, fix the ears and make legs smolr. start with a good sketch and understand the lighting as well, quit generalizing things cuz it doesn't even work as a style.
>>
>>30385570

Its pressure sensitivity and other shit are fantastic. My last tablet, the first generation Bamboo lasted for 8 years and I only got a new one because my stylus came out of my purse while I was out one day. I wouldn't buy any other brand because they're hardy and made really well. I don't mind spending extra on them because they last so long and work well. /dicksuckingwacom

>>
>>30396958
Still lives.
>>

>>
>>30396958
You learn patience through all things, not just art. You have to learn to enjoy the time you wait; like I've waited 3-5 hours to see a specialist many times because of how important he was and I just learned to keep a sketchbook and pencil with me or a deck of cards or a sudoku book for example. It could help you to go find a nice spot somewhere in nature (like next to a river or a good view in general) and try to draw it or paint it out. Pretend you're Bob Ross. I am positive you have up to 30 minutes on days off (or even on work/school days) to practice your drawing patience (or drawing in general of course), so you should really do that. In fact, take a magazine with you and do gestures of the photos in there while you're out enjoying nature. You shouldn't bring your phone with you if you do this though because it'll distract you and might cause anxiety.
>>30397322

Try using very soft or very hard pencils. Very hard pencils (6-8H) will give you very light lines but very deep marks so you'll learn not to press so hard while very soft pencils (6-8B) will not give you very deep marks but it will give you very dark lines so you'll learn to press lighter. Okay.
Month is almost over.
Finished one of the pending projects and worked on past challenges.
But to no avial.

Why can't I into poni?
Why can't I into drawing?

Fuck this shit.
I should end myself.
>>
>>30418278
Don't you give up on yourself, anon. You're not defeated until you accept it.
>tfw seriously behind on practice but enjoy drawing so it doesn't matter
I don't even know if I'm improving, grinding those fundies should be the priority, instead I'm just fucking around with no sense of direction. A-at least I'm having f-fun, right?
>>
>>30418383
Let's draw until we are not shit anymore.

I archieved that feat on numerous occsaions.
Oddly, I got the exact opposite reaction many times aswell.

Just keep on drawing to git gud.
One day, after all that grinding, after thousands of sketches and drawings, after learning and practicing, we will no longer be shit.

I have some evidence that disproves your hypothesis.

Exhibit A: Afh
>>
>>30419876
>Afh
I thought his art was pretty good. Compared to when he first started? It's a huge fucking jump looking back.

How does afh make technically correct pictures but theyre so boring/stiff/usually the same character. There's no flair of creativity with anything of afhs pictures. I feel like the guy cannot draw characters without 3 different guides open and having Twilight Sparkle there.
It's stiff. It's boring.

Its technically proficient Zimbabwe.
If afh is reading this I want you to break out of your comfort zone and just do a bunch of fun sketches with different characters in many different poses. Make your pictures look like cartoons not architect pony schematics.
>>
>>30420365
He might have improved, but he's still far from good.
It's also some pretty mediocre improvement considering the fact that he's been doing this for like, what, two years? Assuming more proper practice and study one could already be at least somewhat competent in that time. But that's a different topic.

>>30421541
They're not very "technically correct," though. And, well, it's not even an issue of creativity or the amount of guides, it's just that he follows construction way too closely without even understanding said construction very well. Like he fears just quickly drawing a simple circle, and going outside that circle, plus not understanding that, at one point, you kinda should be able to visualize things.

There's also the issue of him just copying the show as far as I can tell, which is detrimental in both a technical and creative level.

What features should I look for in a drawing tablet?
>>
>>30423343
Pressure levels and size. A larger pad means you can do longer strokes.
>>
>>30423378
I normally just draw on a standard letter-sized sheet of paper, but I'm guessing I don't need an 8½"×11" tablet.

Could you explain how they're static or emotionless? For the bottom-left one, I explicitly tried to stick to a clear line of action.

Krita's free and it's sort of a hybrid of the two.
>>
>>30429287
I looked at your DB, you've stopped improving around "day" 30-40. All that you drew since day 50 is a useless waste of time.
This is pathetic and sad.

>now you're full of shit
No, dude, he's right. You just think you're improving because you refuse to believe how much you suck (which is a lot)
>>
>>30430854
Do you seriously not see the improvement between the top row and the bottom row?
>>
>>30430864
You traded some bad skills for other bad skills while trading some good skills for other bad skills so yeah, it equals out. If so many people think you suck you probably do - you just won't accept it and that's not our fault, that's yours.
>>
>>30430864

So you see that the drawings on the top row are bad now, right? I want you to imagine yourself 6 months from now and looking back on those bottom drawings and realizing how much they suck, too. I want you to keep drawing but you seriously need to let go of your ego. People are dog-piling on you because of the way you get so easily flustered.
>>
>>30430987
I'm not saying I don't have room for improvement, just that it's bullshit to act like I haven't improved at all.
