eh, its kind of meh compared to the first honestly.

I was expecting more action or earth pony badassness. This is an okay comic, about a 6/10, but its a step down from the last one, which tied into Current day Mane cast characters and had some interesting stuff to it (the shadow dimension and the voice).


I was hoping more for a comic about earth ponie's being bad ass fighters in their own ways and a link to some of the earth ponies in the show now. I just got a kind of side story that fit the universe but didn't tie into anything.
color me dissapointed, sadly. Not terrible, but not great. 6/10

Art's not awful, and the Cherufe - it's a South American mythology thing - was a neat mix with the general viking theme.

The core problem here is that an entirely OC-based story has to get the audience invested in their emotional development rather than relying on attachments to existing characters, which is tough in a 22-page comic. Worse yet, the final turning point - the whole bit of "look at a problem in a different way" - relies on something we're told of, not shown in the comic.

In fact, there are really two stories here - Rockhoof getting lax and out-of-shape, and his ability to take an unorthodox approach to issues. The latter forms the beginning and end of the comic, but the former chews up much of the middle - and unfortunately, in a comic this short there's just not enough room to tell two parallel stories like that. This isn't even a new problem with IDW; they seem to regularly run into severe pacing issues whether in one issue or across many.

Stripping it down to just have the unorthodox viewpoint story - having the ponies in the guard favoring a head-on approach, and becoming unhappy when Rockhoof doesn't meet their expectations of a gung-ho, always-ready-to-go hero until he proves himself at the end with brains and brawn - would have resulted in a much more smoothly-flowing plot.

Yet in the end, that still just makes it "a story". Maybe I'm being unfair to criticize it for not covering familiar territory, but the lack of any characters we've seen (or will see again) makes me decidedly uninterested in Rockhoof to begin with.

They won't. Here's some fun facts on sales for Legend of Magic at least coming from comichron. The very last issue of Friends Forever, the Celestia & Luna issue, sold about 8,000 units. The very first issue of Legends of Magic, its replacement, sold 11,000 units, which puts it even the latest mainline comic at 10,000~. Which got them the small boost they wanted.

However, this time JUST last year, in April 2016, Friends Forever #27 sold 12,000 units, a thousand more than Legends of Magic #1 did. And the drop for Legends of Magic is likely to be very big this next time going off of, for example, Equestria Daily. Last month, Legends of Magic #1 accrued 175 comments on the first day. Legends of Magic #2 will not get more than 13. People don't give a shit about the OC's and Legends of Magic will be lucky to make it past 12 issues I reckon
