Shadow Lock actually being a person who was afraid being an edgelord instead actually being one redeemed him a bit for me. Some stuff the other mane 5 were chuckle worthy. But ultimately it's just very bland and forgettable. I doubt any of this is actually going to tie into the actual show outside of that one villain who looks suspiciously like Thorax

That's not weird, that's called doing your job properly: Side canon that helps to accentuate the Hard canon without being actually required.

And so we finally reach the end of our tale and the big bad evil is revealed to be..... someone we've never met before. Hm. You know I'm fine with it not being something predictable but, at the same time, the fact that they don't even bother to give it a NAME or give us anything to build off of it seems kind of anticlimactic. I mean it has a Sombra curvy horn and Chrysalis-holes in his wings but beyond there's not exactly a lot to discuss. It looks cool I'll give it that but after three months of speculation not even being given a name in the end feels like a let down.
As was with the same issue in the middle of the other two parts of this arc the Mane 6's side-ventures (this time taking place in the exhibits instead of searching a town for info or stopping by Shadow's hit spots) are kiinda entertaining but, there isn't exactly a lot here that doesn't feel like filler padding out the story either. Shadow Lock's trap spell is, by his own admission, stopped pretty easily and in the end Shadow Lock is successfully talked down in moments by Twilight applying the bare basic amount of logic that was laid out pretty clearly in the last comic: you learn from history.
All in all Shadowlock ends what was a mysterious and fairly intimidating villain by being more on the ineffectual side. His reasoning for going around zapping books of all of their history is outright stated as stupid by Applejack and himself. His entire motivation was fed by fear of what the creature coming back could do that he didn't stop to think of what damage he was causing by blanking history. Including now possibly ANY remnants of how to stop the creature in the first place. It's a really weak justification for his actions and takes away a good bit of the potential I felt he had at the beginning. His arc falls flat because logic played so little into his reasoning.

And in the end, unless I'm mistaken here, his damage IS permanent given we never see him fixing it. The multiple break ins, the various feats of property damage, the ponies endangered, the sheer loss of knowledge... and he's quickly forgiven for all of it because he realizes how big a bad it was. Won't fault the ponies for that part, that's par for the course, but it's still a little irksome. That said Shadowlock was, until his pretty quick turnaround due to realizing how utterly foolish he's been, not a bad villain. He was antagonistic but you could feel some sympathy for his cause up until this arc, particularly because it felt like all of his spells were so easily fixed because he really didn't want to hurt any pony and wanted to help them, which puts him a good steps above other 'well-intentioned' antagonists in the comics. He had a cool powerset, a neat but simple design, he was a legit challenge without being overpowered, and while I still think the calls of his edginess are legit, it didn't get too overpowering (though his early lines still reek of it in this particular comic: you're the one going around breaking stuff man, why don't you expect someone to stop you?)
I will give credit if, and I only say if because I have no idea if this is intentional, the evil force is a sort of psychic/meme based force that did wind its way into everything Shadow Lock saw after he learned its name like some kind of ancient evil pony Babadook, but what I garnered from that was that he just happened to start noticing him more after he first realized his existence, which is a thing that also happens without any kind of eldritch mind shenanigans (ie, you read about something in one source you begin to notice it's been in a lot of other things you missed as well).

In the end though, this was definitely an 'okay' arc. It wasn't really that bad at any point like others have been but it WAS slow and padding out, even if some of the filler was enjoyable it really did not build the core of the story, which in the end was really, really easily resolved just by talking to Shadow Lock. And then Shadow Lock's motivation fell flat. Did he work alone because knowing the bad guy's name gives him power? No, he just wanted to be edgey-alone about it. Did he erase all traces of history because he can only exist in stories? No, it was because he was so frightened he didn't think of even looking up how he was beaten in the first place. Did he keep said plan of how he was defeated originally just in case this plan went south? No, in fact he may well have erased it permanently. And all this still doesn't answer small questions I had about his plan in earlier parts but, that could go on.
Point being, this is definitely not a bad story. It's a decent one and still probably one of the better ones put out as far as the main line goes, but on a whole it feels like a 1.5 issue comic stretched out to 3, with an initially interesting villain and bigger looming threat that ends in what I feel is a disappointingly small payoff. Who knows if the comics will keep their word and we'll actually see this mysterious bigger bad sometime in the future but if he really did almost conquer Equestria you would figure he'd be mentioned somewhere by this point. Still a lot of season left to see I guess but I can't tell if this story will ever come up or Shadow Lock ever mentioned again from where we stand with the current episode list. And if it does, there's not much this side-story does to add to the monster himself: just that there was this one time that one nut burned a lot of books in fear of him.

The trapping them in the exhibitions was completely pointless, they could have just as easily stayed hidden like Twilight and confronted him together and the story would have been just the same, It's as if they were forced to write it in a "the villain easily beats everyone but loses to Twilight" way but got wrote into a corner on top of it being just pointless padding for what shouldn't have been a three-parter. Shadow Lock himself just became a whiny bitch if they made it seem like this villain's return was inevitable, it would have gone alot better. And why is it not Sombra?

Especially "one of these things gonna hurt somepony" being a meta reference to this villain rather than objects.
It's either
1. Grogar who is actually an alicorn or a new monster (unlikely since Shadow Lock suppose to be the same race as him so it must be an alicorn)
2. Brother Cosmos the scapped villain Alicorn from the movie.
I'm kind of hyped for S7 finale, lets just hope it's not Starlight Glimmer related.

As much as I'd like to see alicorns finally being properly explored, I think they made the right call to drop that for a movie that's supposed to bring in new blood to the franchise.
Hopefully they're either saving it for the tv series or a movie sequel.

It was okay, but it feels like without the big bad they were talking about the story was left unfinished.
The lesson was pretty good though. I wish more people would take it to heart. And not just superficially like they do today.

And when has it been established that Glimmer has zero learning ability? Twilight keeps talking about how she excels at her magic studies, and from what we've seen Glimmer learns quickly.
And even if she was born with it, Glimmer having exceptional magical power is still bullshit, especially more so than the pony who's special talent was magic and was tutored by Celestia. There's no natural talent that is going to let you equal someone who's studied magic all their life among the most magically powerful people in the world. It's an asspull to say 'oh, she was just born with magical power stronger than Celestia for no reason.'
I mean, fuck, do you not see anything wrong with that sentence?
Now if there WAS a reason why she was as strong as she was, I'd be more inclined to believe that she's not a complete crutch added because the writers don't know how to write the mane six.And Maud isn't stronger than Big Mac. The strongest thing we've seen her do is break rocks, which makes sense since she's spent her entire life studying how to break rocks.

Look, I'll admit it's been a while since I've seen the episode, but I don't recall Starlight using her magic to remove cutie marks at any point. Every time she does so, she's using the stick to remove them. She even uses it to disable Twilight. I don't see how you could think it was Starlight's spell when the magic doesn't even match her magic aura colour.

Which is why she's not a magical genius who's spliced together and altered/perfected multiple spells, Right?
That would be a GOOD way to have dealt with her by making her a magical retard, but she's shown incredible understanding of magical theory-- look at every little thing she does where she talks about combining different spells to make new ones at the start for example.
