Challenge #8: Throwback Thursday

= BEFORE AND AFTER =

The challenge is easy! Pick one of your very first pony drawings and redraw it. There are no rules other than you should post the before and after together. I have posted my own so you may see how horrible my shit was 6 years ago and make fun of it.

*A note about past challenges: None of the challenges ever end. You may do them and redo them in any order and however many times you want. Just because I put up new challenges that doesn't mean you can't do past ones!

I hope you guys enjoy these and hope that they help you improve and have fun doing it!

What the heck is rendering? I hear that term a lot, but isn't it just saving the image?
>>
>>29968332
Rendering: The process of adding form, color, light, shadow and texture to an image. If you take a line drawing and you add color to it, shade it, make it feel like it has mass, form, depth to it, that's rendering.
>>
does anyone else have this thing while working on a large file with tons of layers and paths, where every time you save it takes literally minutes to save? am i the only one? seems to happen on every computer I use, is buying an SSD the only solution?
>>
>>29968332
>>29968343
No, that's blocking-in. Rendering is refining from the block-in, making smooth surfaces smoother and making the textures read better.
>>
>>29968579
Isn't blocking in more or less just very rough rendering?
>>
>>29968064
What kind of envyronment are you thinking about?
If you're going for realism then I would recommend you to watch some of Noah Bradley's videos, but as a general rule, you should try to focus on imitating real life.

>>29968697
Blocking-in is a step on it's own. You can get color, value, and texture (whether it's surface is diffused or spectacular) without adding in too much detail. The process is generally lose, but with things placed right so that when you go over with a render, you don't have to think about things that much. If things are added afterwards it's very minute stuff.

Picrelated is more or less block-in. It's a very old unfinished collab I was doing with someone else. We only got a little bit past block-in stage.

Color and anatomy are my two strengths. Color theory itself, and the way it's taught in schools is a pretty big meme. If you're looking to go deeper into it, throw out the color wheel meme and everything you were told in grade school or high school, read and study how light actually works, and use your own intuition to make decisions based on what you've learned.

Eh, don't bother with him. Your Owluicius (fuck how do you spell that) looks great but your Twi needs some help. I see you went for a partially realistic style but keeping her front legs and particularly her hooves cartoonish they come out as clubbed and take away from the rest of the drawing which is quite good. I'd also make her muzzle smaller/less wide so she looks more feminine. I ended up just doing a redline nobody asked for, so I hope you don't mind that.
>>29972967
Sorry, the shape of the head was just confusing. I'll finish the redlines on it now.

Hey everyone! Looking for a critique!

I drew up this pone a few days ago, and I know there's something very wrong with it! While I wasn't going for show-accurate, I know there's stuff I need to work on. Before I say what I noticed, I'd like to hear some critiques!
Please help me art friends!
>>
>>29974564
Welll
you need to forget the following ideas:
- "pony shoulder = human shoulder"
- "pony breast = dog breast"
- "pony thigh = ball"

Also consider the following:
- show style of ponies has very wide triangular ears and I'm going to bitch about this because other than the furnishings, your pony is very show-style (proportion and shape)
- the tail bone is the final segment of the spine and does not jut out of the croup
- remember to treat hindlegs as tubes, the same way you do for forelegs
>>
>>29974711
Ah excellent! Thank you for the critique!

This particular pony was a little weird because the way the original artist drew her was decidedly more human like, and I wanted to try and capture a little of that! Especially the furry chest, that was the artist's thing for her.
I've been studying horse anatomy a little, and the shoulders are a little tricky. Still getting the hang of it. Haven't drawn ponies like this in awhile. Very rusty!
Here's a different drawing I did for her. Ignore the pencil sketches, they were just experimentation!

Are those same problems present here, or was I more accurate on my second attempt?

Thank you again for the advice!

How do I into line consistency and weight?
Even doing single strokes I sometimes feel the need to correct it and I think it causes more problem than before.
The eyes for example are fucked up more than in one way but I can't really do it in a single stroke yet and lines get uneven no matter what I do.

Feel free to point out everything else as well, just starting out so I'd appreciate it.
>>
>>29980148

Do some figure drawing, theres are no horse figure drawing sites but here is a human one

reference.sketchdaily.net

This will help you to draw fast and notice things faster, lines dont have to fit exactly where they belong at the first stroke but need to capture the idea of a pose
for line weight you just a need a good brush
for line consistency do some hand exercises

I gave it a go myself. Arm isn't too long if you were trying to go for a foreshortening thing. The lines you used are kind of jarring, but you look like you know your perspective and how it works. Take advantage of that and try thinking in boxes instead of lines.

It's an improvement but you still have a ways to go.

There are three things I would focus on for now, if I were you:
>Construction
While it looks like you're starting to do a little more of this since the previous drawing, it seems that you're breaking it up into pieces too large. For example, the torso appears to be made out of a single oval, where you should be using at least two, with one for the ribcage and one for the hips.
>Line Control
Try to work on making each line with a single, broad stroke when possible, and try to work more with the elbow and shoulder instead of the fingers and wrist. With practice it should wind up looking far less shaky and "hairy" than what you have now.
>Gesture
Right now the pose is fairly stiff and boring. I would recommend doing a little research into gesture drawing tutorials as well as learning what a line of action is and incorporating it into your drawings. You'll find that even a neutral pose like that one can look a lot more interesting if it's drawn with a line of action in mind.
>>
is shading even necessary on a pone pic? i mean all the pone in the show are fullbright, yet all the highest rated pics have like bob ross quality shading or are those creepy gmod anthro 3d models
>>
>>29986098
Thanks. I'm not the same person that drew the original, but this was my first time drawing a pony. I'm still getting used to my drawing tablet, so the shaky lines were more out of frustration than anything. I'll definitely keep your advice in mind, it'll help a lot.

No problem, glad I could help
>>
>>29986419
That's up to you
>>
>>29986563
I'll give it to you straight, there's not much in your drawing that looks like a pony. You don't know what a pony looks like, so look at ponies to get an idea. Compare your drawing to a screenshot or whatever. Also you don't know how a bicycle looks like. Few people do. (If you think you know, draw one from memory no cheating.) To git gud you need to accept the fact that you barely know what anything looks like. That's the first step.
>>
>>29986563
Serious question, did you reference the comic's ponies by Jay Fosgitt?
>>
>>29986563
its the catpone guy :0
>>
>>29986419
Shading is never necessary. But done right it sure does take even a simple draw to another level altogether.

Shading show-style or similar is really tricky though. The figures are super simplified and unshaded for production purposes and most non-show stuff keeps the same aesthetic so apart from good quality figurines there's nothing to really reference from.

And god help you if your style is more realistic. Simple shading like a figurine won't cut it, it'll make the figure look artificial. You need more realism for the shading as well, and that's when it gets complicated, juggling a balance between RL horse complexity and showstyle simplicity.
>>
>>29986642
If he referenced anything it was a Neopet.

I attached another pic that helps explain it for color a little. Rendering is difficult, so be patient with yourself!
>>
>>29986816
I've tried doing rendering with color and it is super fucking difficult. It is easier to see in greyscale.
>>
>>29986828

Simply put, I wouldn't, as it just doesn't work that well on a quadruped. That said, if you really insist on doing so you need to make it MUCH subtler. Look at real women for reference if you need to, you'll notice that "hourglass" is not nearly as concave as in cartoons

At least you're not tracing vectors anymore, although this still looks a little too close to a common show pose for comfort, guide lines be damned. If you're still tracing then you need to unironically hang yourself.

>style and mistakes

Style can be a lot of things. Usually the look, feel, and how something is rendered is what makes a style stand out. An artists consistent tendencies can be another. But you can have bad tendencies; broken anatomy, or just the overall use of bad shapes. You can have a style be unappealing and ugly. Of course its all subjective. If you have too many people tell you that you're style is "ugly" then its honestly a good time to reflect on what you're missing and what you need to study to make it better.

https://www.derpibooru.org/tags/artist-colon-ringteam

^a good example of an "ugly" style. It comes off as a 13 year old who just wants an excuse to draw boobs. Everything they draw is just very unappealing to look at.

Like >>29997824 said. Let "style" come from a place of good taste, knowledge, and experience. Show some competency and you can make your art stand out even further than with just gimmicks (IE M-muh style).

>>29997767
>Is there a quick and dirty guide on how to do good throwaway backdrops
>quick

No. Study some graphic design if you want some ideas on how to make effective backdrops. You can make your center piece stand out with contrasting shapes, tangents, and colors. If it's coming from a place of little knowledge then your backdrops are going to be a complete eyesore and ruin the drawing.

https://youtu.be/2vnFdYksnqo
https://youtu.be/RJIWllIMHsg

ESPECIALLY watch the video on tangents. Once you know what a bad tangent is you can start avoiding them in your art immediately.

>Video on tangents.
Underrated post. Drawing skills mean very little if you don't have good design.
Get solid foundations through study and effort, then use that to develop an appealing art style of your own.

If you're looking to develop your own style which you shouldn't be unless you have really gotten your fundamentals down pat then study the styles of artists you like that capture the aesthetic you're going for. Find out what makes it tick and use that knowledge to fuel your own designs.

I can't believe for once you actually did something else.

Neat attempt, but there are plenty of issues. I see you drew a little sun, indicating you aren't a complete foreigner to the idea of a source of light, but it seems you still don't get where the light is supposed to hit. Look at how the forelegs and right arm showcase the light is coming from the bottom left, while the arm shows it's coming from the upper left, etc. The rather subtle way you drew the shading also makes it seem as if though the light source was extremely near Twiggy.

tl;dr go look into how lighting actually works in real life, and get a better sense of where the light really is coming and hitting the object.

Also, I've noticed your eyes still look extremely weird, almost as if they were stickers with no depth. Remember eyes are intended to be an object of their own, just like the head.

http://gurneyjourney.blogspot.mx/2008/04/hair-ribbon-secret.html
http://gurneyjourney.blogspot.mx/2008/04/hair-string-mop.html

There are two things I would recomend you, use a bigger brush and make longer strokes that flow with the direction of the hair, think of it as a single mass first and only when that looks ok to you you should then start adding texture,

So i'm not sure if that's the right place to ask, but whatever. How do I stop my hand from shaking so much? I dropped drawing because of that few months ago but I'd really want to get back into it, so I picked up the pencil and tried to do my routine warm up of drawing circles, only to find out that my hand still shakes too much. it's infuriating. just to clarify, the problem wasn't always there, it started maybe half a year ago. Am I just making excuses and it will go away once I get better at controlling my hand movements?
>>
>>30014346
If your hand and arm are relaxed but you still got shaky hands, the culprit is probably stress hormones, whether from sleep deprivation, excess caffeine, anxiety, stress, medication side effects or whatever. It could even be anxiety over your shaky hands, I should know.

If some light exercise, rubbing + stretching your arm/hand/shoulders/neck, and counter-stress measures don't help, visit your GP.
>>
>>30014346
>>30014424
Or, a more common culprit, you're mentally blocking yourself from it. Does more or less shaking happen when you sit down to draw as compared to, say playing video games or whatever activity you do to relax in the day? It's not something that's always there too, it's a bad habit you picked up because you forgot how to relax and have fun drawing. It's also a thing that can deter you from even sitting down to draw which looks like the case here, having stopped for a period of months.

Drawing should be meditative, Anon. Fix your posture and learn to control your breathing while drawing. The more result oriented you are before you even start will only mentally block yourself further and you'll freeze up again. Another way to kick this bad habit, is to draw what you like while slowly applying what you learn. You should be doing that nearly 100% of the time starting off anyways.

Your lines are shaky, the tail doesn't have any volume, the front left hoof is higher off the ground than the rear left hoof, and the back right hoof is higher off the ground than the front right hoof. The ear is off, too; it needs to come off the head at a defined point instead of being integrated into the lines for the back of the head and the mane. It's also a little too thin. The part of the head just above the muzzle is too sharply curved, it shouldn't start at less than a right angle from the top of the muzzle. You're also missing nostrils, and the chest seems a little too flat to me. Overall, solid foundations but you just have a little bit farther to go. Apologies for nitpicking.
>>
>>30017764
Thank you, and really there's no need to apologize, I didn't realize more than half of those until you brought it up.
>>
>>30017903
They're fairly small anatomy errors that it's very easy to overlook right as you come off the incredible high of finishing a drawing. I don't know what chemicals are dumped into my system to make the drawing I just finished look like the next Mona Lisa but they make it easy to ignore little mistakes. Just keep drawing as much as you can to eradicate these little flaws and, once you've finished drawing, go back the next day, look over it, and fix whatever mistakes you notice, because they'll be there. It's what I do on the rare occasions that I actually draw something. Shit works.

Not that anon, but fucking Christ, Afh, you're legitimately autistic, aren't you.

This isn't about practicing, this is about you being a complete and utter failure of an artist. You just posted the same thing twice, and your excuse is that you're "practicing" shading?
You're not practicing, you're posting your shit in hopes of someone giving you a detailed list on what you're doing wrong.
I'm honestly astonished at how you keep doing stuff like this. People have told you ways of getting better at sketching, drawing faster, to study, whatever will help you to get good, and you still seem to ignore most of it.
You fail at self-critique, something I'd argue is one of the most important parts of being an artist.
I mean, do people really have to tell you to not upload everything you do?

I'm astonished at how much of a lost cause someone can be.

I'm trying to still learn pony anatomy in my own style (sorry the sketches are so messy, I don't erase much unless its gonna be an actual finished picture), do you think this is a pretty decent job?
>>
>>30013194
two options for this,
option one would be to use paths and fill them. you can modify them however you like this way and it will make perfectly clean lines if done right, but its much more time consuming as you must go around the entire line, not just recreate it but go around its edges.

the second option is to use like a wacom tablet and make quick decisive strokes, that way they dont come out all shakey. if your program allows you to rotate the canvas (in krita its ctrl+[ and ctrl+]) then use that in case you're like me and can only do good lines in certain directions.

You know, I agree with the others that
A. You need to try different poses, and
B. You need to study the tutorials, or just google "shading," "crosshatching," etc, because all the questions you're asking I've been able to find answers to on my own, and I'm no artist. Pic related; crosshatching example.

That said, they really are being unnecessarily assholish, accusing you of posting the same things when if they actually looked at your pics, could see you are making changes. Don't let the oozing reddit tier elitism get to you. I've been following your progress from your very first post, and in fact, yours are some of the first ones I look for when dropping in a new thread to see what you've managed to do. In order to get myself to draw more frequently, I've started a comic diary. I'm not sure if I want to refine them past sketches or leave them like this one. I'm sure it's a little difficult to make sense of this, but if anyone has any advice for me on how to refine this I'd love to hear it.

Being proud of making lines on a piece of paper is like being proud that you're a homosexual. There's something fundamentally wrong with the way you think if you've "drawn so many ponies." and haven't improved. If you haven't learned from the last 20 pony drawings, do you think making the same exact mistakes for the next 50 pony drawings will make you a better artist? Mistakes are good, but if they occur more than once or twice, you should be figuring out why you're making the same mistakes instead of bitching in the thread when people are reluctant to spoon feed you.
>>
>>30055213
Anon. Do you even read whatever the fuck you're saying?
No one cares if you're right, if the way you're saying it is insanely retarded. Also, no, sorry, you're not always right.
>Being proud of making lines on a piece of paper is like being proud that you're a homosexual.
What the fuck are you on about LOL

Not everyone's the same Anon, some people are better at learning shit the 'hard way', others aren't.
Having teachers telling you that you're shit and you shouldn't ever be proud of whatever you're doing isn't helping anyone.
Confidence is just as important as practice, you mongoloid.

Still literally nothing is hard about learning from your mistakes and making shapes on a piece of paper. If you equate a skill to self worth you're only making things harder.

What if you don't have anything else
>>
>>30055282
Than you REALLY shouldn't equate it to self worth. Artists don't make a masterpiece out of every drawing because we're (hopefully) constantly making new mistakes to learn from. Those that think their last piece is directionally proportional to their self worth are the ones that get depressed more than most. Because it only encourages thoughts like, "I did bad therefore I am bad."

Stop thinking so deeply about it. Just draw and have fun you cucks.

>>
>>30055226
Exactly this. Telling someone they're shit and stay in place is not helping. Helping is when you tell them what they do wrong. What if someone don't know they're making mistakes? this.

The volume of where you expect her genitals reads as if part of the same mass/surface as the inside of her buttock.

Maybe it's because you defined a space where it would be, but it has a separate contour from the rest. (grn)

the shading is inconsistent with the expected, and omitted line that would define the location of genitals, so it's being realized by the viewer as additional weight associated nearby.

think of the crotch like a rounded, rather narrow surface like a panty crotch

the crotch features, male or female, are attached onto that rounded surface

avoid excess broadness and volume or you'll get the dreaded diaper look

don't draw in the entire outline of the buttock, the connection isn't that sharp and drawing it in makes the entire limb look like it's an entirely separate piece

same thing with the hocks

be aware that the naked triangle on the dock is located centered on the underside of the dock and does not reach the sides

Are you an idiot? Look at your pictures on booru and that broken twi, see the difference.
>>
>>30075225
It seems I am an idiot. I have to live with this.

I'm not saying the pose is natural or works well, just that it's possible.

>>30075225
first one (Luna) is about as fucked up, but has better buttock area
>>
>>30075248
From the begining when I've done first line I knew this is not natural. But tried to make it work. It's not a horse, it's a cartoon pony in a fucking lingerie.
I'll try to lift whole butt, it's more into sitting position now, maybe this is what causes the issue. Also making tibia longer might help.

>not a horse, it's a cartoon pony in a fucking lingerie
>appeal to cartoon
the lingerie goes to waste if the first thing your audience thinks is "who did this to the poor animal?" and the second thing is a conundrum whether it's okay to fap to Polio Pie and whether that solution applies here
>>
>>30075333
that's why I am trying to get rid of wierd look and trying to fix it based on refs. I spent 5 hours stright on fixes alone. I won't give this up even if it has to take 5 more.

>5 hours
Just WOW, you're sure know how to waste your life.
>>
>>30075554
I would be playing games anyway so yeah, a total waste. You can't waste life if you don't have it.

If you can't see the difference between >>30072374 and the links in >>30075176 you have problems.
>>
>>30077336
I see the difference. I haven't posted them to prove anything, just to show for what I was aiming for. But it seems I failed. Like always.
I will be bad forever and I have to live with it.

I find it funny that about half of the Horse's legs are basically just one long finger. When the ponies wave their hooves they are giving you the finger

Yes, the ankle joint is lower than the knee joint. Just draw pony legs as normal for satyrs, unless you want to make them more anthro like this satyr.
>>
>>30072839
Your original drawing of the back legs is "fine". Just maybe slightly painful. Like how it's hard for you to put your feet exactly flat when laying on your belly. The ankle does not like to go straight.
