Pretty good actually, I'd say it's a solid 7. It's a very cute story of the sisters and their adventures. The suddenly realization of how wrong she'd done by her sister and her efforts to make up for it were really sweet, and Starswirl served role as a teacher well in being both tough and fair to both of the sisters.

Did not do a lot to do with Starswirl as the blurb would have you think but that's alright, I'm good with focusing on the Princesses. I do think this portrayal of young Celestia conflicts a bit with their portrayal in the Journal of the Two Sisters a fair bit though. Celestia was regarded as anything as TOO protective / supportive of Luna in that. Celestia has always had a teasing aspect to her personality I find it really kind of hard to believe the level of cruelty displayed towards her sister and the disrespect towards her teacher, frustration or no. I also find it very odd that this level of magic lesson as casting/popping bubbles after they've already started moving the freaking heavens around on a whim.

That said, both of those issues are resolved but a pretty simple choice I'm surprised they did not take: remove the cutie marks, and therefore you can justify it as having taken place before they were at the level of magic shown at the end of the Journal, and prior to the development we saw in it. The idea of Celestia being a mean, deriding sister does still sort of vex me but I do love the idea of it because it paints a contrast with Sunset Shimmer, and explains why Celestia may have taken her in the past: seeing some of her self.

That said I also do not care for yet more excuses as to why Luna turned to the darkside: jealousy and pain born out of her own heart with not a soul to blame for her choices but herself will always be more interesting than the nightmare force or voices coming from yet another dimension trying to corrupt her, it was the one questionable thing in an otherwise great arc back in the Nightmarity issues. Why couldn't it have been just Luna/Celestia taking on a unrelated danger from their past, why feel the need to force more Nightmare Moon imagery in?

Other than those two big things, I liked it alright. I don't think Legends of Magic is going to last as long as Friends Forever but it might be a good ride if this level keeps up.

Wasp and Princeless and Raven are god-awful but I rather liked FIENDship, the Rarity/Babs FF, and the Luna/Discord FF.

That being said, they seem to be going forward 100% with the "Nightmare force turned luna" evil thing here since its obviously implying that some other eldritch force wanted to turn her into NMM, so people who dislike the nightmare force thing will obviously have issues with it.
Either way, I found it a good one, showed some nice character dev on celestia's part, and I the lore was interesting.

Did you bother reading pass the equivalent of the opening pilot or are you to up on the fact that it's Whitley? Things pick up after the red haired, strong girl is introduced, who balances the MC. The dark sister pricesses are pure waifu material and their arcs interesting; so is the evolution of the brother and his quest. The father too has a rounded character and adds to the dynamic.

Re-writing the canon and even the previous comic "canon" isn't decent.

Oh shit, I just had an awful realization.
This comic is about Luna opening a portal and a dark force wanting to use her as a host; The promo is about starlight opening a portal and getting sucked in.

The finale is going to be about starlight being used as a host for some evil force to become nightmare starlight, curb stomping everyone, then getting talked down by twilight into conquering it or some shit, and then becoming an alicorn princess after she defeats whatever is wanting a host.

I'm not entirely sure yet if that was actually what happened. You could interpret it both ways, that it was either NMM seeing her as useful host and planting the seed.

Consider also that, in the Nightmare Rarity arc, Luna mentions she made an agreement with the Nightmare Force. And while it does possess Rarity, we see it ask Luna to rejoin with it. If it could force itself on Luna, why would it need to ask?

Then there's Ponies of Dark Water where Luna confirms her actions as Nightmare Moon weren't the result of being forced by an outside influence.

That could be explained away by Luna being more powerful (or at least having better control over her power) later on.

But yeah, I guess if you some it all up her going back to that dimension and voluntarily being possessed makes the most sense.

Also, no surprise that he again takes away any possible malice or accountability for actions when its his favorite characters. The way he writes Discord is particularly bad, but the whole "Luna Did Nothing Wrong" IDW stories for NMM rob Luna of any blame and it is stupid.
