I honestly feel like the only finales that allow the Mane 6 to do anything is Best Night Ever, and the first ~17 minutes of MMC (ironically, when the Mane 5 do their absolute most in any post S1 finale, Twilight reaps all the reward and attention in it). In S2's they do nothing, S4's they get captured by Tirek, S5's they are victims in the timelines, and S6's I don't even need to say.

This is pretty sad to me, honestly. I fear for the movie.

Well I was talking about finales. And I can't say I really count the changeling fight because yeah there was that very brief bit, but they lost and then Cadence and Shinging Armor used some lasers.

Honestly I was hoping Rainbow Power would develop into something, I'm actually a bit annoyed that got forgotten about because I thought maybe it could transition things without the elements now.

That's a really cool idea too, I'd love that. Another adventure like Rarity Investigates. Personally, I hope this season's finale isn't BIG if you get what I mean, solely because we all know the movie is going to be huge, but it already feels like it's repeating several aspects of other finales. I enjoyed the side character spotlight in the first part and Trixie's banter was top notch. However, the second part dropped the ball. The episode goes systematically through each character doing one useful thing like it's the pilot again, there was no villain song and the ending resolution is literally just "stop being bad" "okay". Pinkie is troublesome because she is all over the place. The thinking, serious when needed, funny with some randomness Pinkie? Sure, yeah. I agree with you on that about Pinkie, one of her worst problems is in the hands of the wrong writer, she's an autistic "lol random" meme machine as you put it. And that's really unfortunate. However, I feel like when she's done well (Pinkie Pride for example) I think that's where her true self shows through. That is actually quite accurate.
Dash getting more one on ones with Testing, Rarity Investigates and Top Bolt is great. I like her a lot in those episodes. I think that's something the show should focus on more, we pretty much have all the individual characters figured out and most of their life goals achieved, so exploring the dynamics between the two of them should be the next choice.
They seem to be trying for something like that. With the two Raripie episode, the Vegas with AJ and Shy, Top Bolt for Twilight and Dash, and maybe some other I'm forgetting right now.

Raritwi still needs to happen, I cannot live on fanfiction alone.

It's really a problem that stretches across a lot of characters, and I've noticed that honestly, of the Mane 6, Rarity's just gotten lucky and for the most part has remained fairly consistent. Perhaps that's the reason her episodes are usually regarded very well compared to others, even by a lot of non-Rarifags.

She also apparently knew to avoid getting an episode in the two worst seasons.

If it really is in their plans now to explore different character interactions then Raritwi is bound to happen. It may come up sooner or later as an opportunity to at least do something original, as it is mostly uncharted territory as of now.
Then again Twishy was also pretty unexplored and it got the lukewarm Hooffields and McColts episode, so finding the right plot to capitalize on both characters' strengths is important.
The best thing about it is that it can bring both characters in positive light. I even started to warm up to Dash after all these paired episodes lately.

Rarity balances out anyone she's paired with without losing the lead. The only mostly one-sided interaction I think is Raripie. I would really like to see Pinkie playing more on Rarity's field but I guess Pinkie's unending enthusiasm is just that infectious.

Dash benefited from those episodes in my eyes as well. I never really disliked her, she was a fun character even on the most basic cheeky cunt level, but the paired episodes actually make me feel sympathetic towards her.
I can't hold the atrocity that was 28 Pranks against her.

I don't even remember most of H&M but it was something along those lines, yes. Twilight froze everyone and Flutters explained why it's bad to fight. What it really lacked was personal investment from both Fluttershy and Twilight. But that is the map's fault yet again. I imagine that in a situation where both had personal stakes, something like Twilight enabling Fluttershy and giving her time and space she needs to act would be really cool for both of them. Both don't deal with stress well at times so I want see them cooperating to pull through.
I never actively disliked Dash but I was pretty much indifferent to her. I think I was able to brush off MMDW and 28 pranks exactly because of that, so that's a win for me I guess. Ever so slightly it started to change over time and I'm honestly glad. I hope that if nothing else we'll get a lot more of these more obscure pairings.
One that could be really interesting is Rarity with Luna. Tabitha talking to herself is pretty funny.

I'd actually really like to see her interact with dragons more. Being so close to Spike, she is a natural choice to be a diplomat of some kind. She and Twilight have already been there twice, and there's still so much more to explore there. I want to see the tension between her and Ember.

Well, Rarity just makes everything better. That's just the way it is. Her gem cutiemark isn't for nothing, like a jeweler she cuts the rough edges of other characters to bring the best out of them. Raripie is really adorable and it does work pretty well. Little spontaneous moment pre-S6 especially. I just hope it doesn't become the new go-to pair. It's probably easy to just write obnoxious Pinkie and Rarity somewhere out there as well, just like it's easy to write basic S1-tier Rarijack. It's a short, usually you can tell that the regular show staff is not working (as hard) on those. Tabitha leans on that accent a bit more for that "in the zone" enthusiastic feeling, but "overplaying" is something that is in my opinion gradually happening over the seasons, just like how they're giving Rarity more darlings.
Another thing to consider is that they could very well just mixed the audio in a different way and give her a bit higher pitch or something. Not even a week back someone approved a teaser trailer that looked like vomit, so anything is possible. Remember back when the Ponyville Confidential promo came out and some people were worried what happened to her voice?

As for the animation, the way her mouth moves (i.e. way too much) and how she shows her teeth, that's where you can tell it's not the regular show people behind the short. They have her sitting there so they paid extra attention to the lip sync and overdone it.
Overall though this is still a pretty solid short with some top notch visuals.

Sounds like I'm in the same boat as well. I just want to be excited, but I feel like the show has proven me wrong, especially with S6. And now this idea that S7 will only have a whopping 5 songs, I really want a nice boutique episode with a song like she keeps getting, and I don't think that's going to happen. I'm worried. But I'm trying not to be. Maybe there's a 2 good seasons with Rarity episode, 1 shitty one pattern? Same thing happened with S3 after all... right?

Lots of people are worried about there not being enough songs, but I don't thin that's such a bad thing. S1 and S2 are generally considered the best seasons, and they don't have many songs. We don't need another song bomb like S4. Without songs, they'll be forced to tell the story without taking shortcuts.

It's still the lowest amount. S1 and S2 had like 7 songs discounting Pinkie's short jingles, S4 had a lot of them but even S5 had plenty. They've managed to keep the quantity even if the quality was dwindling. S5 still had Our Town, RoR, the Lena Hall one, which were great, with the rest being forgettable.
S6 still had more songs than S1 or S2 but damn were they subpar. Christmas ep aside, can you even name a song? Hum a tune? Where are the Winter Wrap Ups, the Cider songs, the Arias, the Apples to the Core? I hate to talk shit about Ingram, but he didn't bring anything other than uninspired, bland and/or easily forgettable songs for S6.
And now there's only five? If the quality was still S1/S2 tier, I wouldn't mind, but what are the chances that at least one of them will be on that level, that one of them will be really catchy? I worry, man.
Not to mention that pacing is something the show has always had problems with, and storytelling has seen better days. Songs are a crutch, and without it we might just end up with a cripple laying on the floor that can't get up.

Pacing is actually a huge issue with songs. Ponies need to sing to emphasize a moment, not to just skip time. Breaking into a song is committing to the scene and if the song is bland and doesn't get the point across it's wasted time.

Sadly I don't think Rarity will get a song in the movie, just backup vocals. In fact I fear that the Mane 6 will get knocked out to the side and most of the songs will go to the new non-pony characters.

As for songs and pacing, I don't think that's the cause. Art of the Dress is killing time, Gala song could just be summed with a couple sentences, even in WWU nothing really happens in the song. Songs can move the plot forward via a montage or stall and fill the 20 minute quota. Emphasizing the moment as the other anon said seems more fitting.
Lyrics are another thing, as well. Remember the Gabi+CMC song, where they're just singing what they're doing in the scenes? It feels like one of those literal trailer parodies. That's just a boring montage to skip ahead.

I disagree with Art of the Dress at least, because I feel like that song definitely has a point. Of course, I suppose that depends on how far you consider something as just "killing time".

I feel like the reason why Art of the Dress works is because we first establish Rarity's thought pattern and how she accomplishes the task of making a dress, and the fluidity of her process. Compare this to the second half, which tells the story about how the Mane 5 bascially fuck that up and disrupt it, as it's spliced up with dialogue. You could remove that and replace it with normal dialogue, but I feel like it wouldn't be as entertaining. So at least for that case I think it was a bit more than killing time. But I think you're right, maybe emphasizing the moment is a better way to put it.

As for the movie, this is how I see it. I'm estimating roughly 1 song for every 10 minutes, maybe if it's 80 minutes, I'd say give it about 7 songs perhaps. There's probably going to be 1 villain song, the seaponies are without a doubt getting a song (will they beat Shoo Be Doo?), Sia is getting a song (not looking forward to that one), the pirate bird is probably getting a song too. That leaves possibly 3 songs for the Mane 6 if I'm estimating correctly. But I hope the Mane 5 aren't just backup vocals for those.

Art of the dress still moves the plot forward a lot, it's a tasteful timeskip. As with WWU, just describing what ponies do in a fast and comprehensive way. It is to pace the episode better. In Our Town is a brilliant exposition, it tells you everything you need to know about the place. Not all songs need to be like that but they still need a purpose, describing how character feels for example.

I think it's gonna be around 5-6. Even with something like a villian song that's plenty. Probably won't be a lot of completely solo ones as well. When did Ingram start writing them is also important, EQG songs were pretty different in each movie so it's hard to guess what style he'll be going for.
