They don't limit or guide you in placement of the facial features at all. None of the heads you drew are consistent.

Besides, if you were actually following the guidelines the features would be in different places.

The fuck are you doing. Divide a simple circle into quadrants so that you indicate direction, center, and tilt. I have no clue what the hell is going on in that image you posted.

But what purpose does the exact centre of a circle serve? I'm not talking about the one that indicates the middle of the face; I'm talking about the one that's centred for the viewer.

You are putting the bonest either in the incorrect positions or the second one from the shoulder is the incorrect length.

look at pic related, it is from the OP gallery. Top right of the pic is bunch of ponies with bones drawn in.

there are two bones inside the horses body and 2 bones that make the leg. after then there is one more bone for the "toe" and the hoof after that.

the leg you drawn, has visibly 3 parts (almost like if you have both the knee and the elbow), even though the most upper part *should* be part of the body itself.

The first two bones, from the shouder, would have impact in how the muscles are shaped around and would create creases if the leg is bent, but it wouldn't be visible below the body as yours is.

tl;dr; move the leg higher up so the top joint is no longer protruding from the body

I'm a bit in a rush now, but I'll try to give you some redlines when i get back. Or maybe someone else can help you better while I'm out

Started Hampton's book today and did like 100 gesture drawing, I am trying to apply it to pone. I think seeing forms in 3D is becoming easier now, but still confusing
>>
>>29479998
Ah the miss on the numbers mate!

Question now. Is this book really worth looking at? Heard a lot about but didn't even look at it.
>>
>>29480020

Damn it, so close.

I am reading both Glenn Vilppu's and Hampton's, I started both today and since I am new to gesture drawing I really can't compare it to other works, but I think both books are really good. Specially if you can snatch the Lesson from GCMA that both authors have.

The book deals on learning rhythm, motion, gesture, construction, anatomy and even some composition, I don't think you can go wrong with it. I mean, I am pretty new to the concept of gesture and to be honest, it seems like one of those things that will really allow you to understand art in a more abstract way.

Works aren't lines of contour anymore, but lines of energy that share relationships with another and help paint a story, it's really eye opening if you're a beginner like me. Check out GCpeers if you want to get those lessons I was talking about, the books are also there.
>>
>>29479784

Stuck at work so no. These past few weeks have been frustrating because I haven't had as much as I want to myself for art and I probably won't all month. #normielife

I still manage a few hours a day but I want more.
>>
>>29480091
I'll give it a try tommorow. Now it's to late and my brain doesn't work.
Just looked at it a little and it seems interesting.
>>
>>29480194

I don't know at what level you are at right now, but I doubt you can go wrong with the book.
>>
are there some nice books in the sticky that are aimed at complete beginners that just started drawing a couple of days ago?
>>
>>29480546

>1. The New Drawing on the Right side of the brain
>2. Keys to Drawing by Bert Dodson

Those two books are great for absolute beginners and should keep you occupied for a little while.
>>
>>29480641
Not the asking guy but I am an absolute beginner and I must this is all much more than I expected it to be. Seem a little overwhelming
>>
>>29474681
if i'm an adult artists, is the mlp community still active in selling/buying commissions?
>>
>>29480641
aight, thanks friendo

>>29480735
ye, had the same impression, so I'll just pick a book this anon recommended and try to work with it
>>
>>29480735

Depends on your goals friend, those two books should get you started on working your observational skills, so you can actually draw what you see instead of what you think you see, which is the core skill of any artist, and will allow you to move into other subjects.

Take it slow, but take it. If you want to improve.
>>

Yes. If you are very good at safe art. With clops you just have to be decent.
>>
>>29475249
It's in the OP pony gallery. There's like 4 or 5 of them.
>>29476789
The last joint in the arm that's being held up is too long comparative to the other parts, so just make them more equal.
>>29477114
Back legs are def too long at the ends and the joints on the rest of the hind legs should be expanded

http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php/81332-Concept-Art-101 Found these assignments I did when I first started drawing seriously some 3 years ago. CA hype was long ded before then because of Jason Manlet shenanigans, but I came across this while looking at a god-tier sketchbook thread on /ic/. Took my sweet time on each assignment and gave myself a week for each individual one.

Seems like the links to each individual posts are dead but they're all in the thread. Might be worth doing especially if you guys can snag a study buddy. Only remembered I even did these last night.

How can keep her balance in that pose? the left hind leg should be crossing the right hind leg, if the right foreleg is going to be crossing the right foreleg.

She's obviously falling to the side?
>>
>>29486111
Yeah man I get that. It was a simple demo for the anon that may have been confused. I use way more guidelines than that to indicate how far the muzzle comes out from the sphere, where the jaw line connects, where the ears are, the side plane of the head, etc. Drawing features on the sphere itself would make for an odd looking waifu. There has to be depth and volume.

Like the third time Ive ever drawn a pony. The eyes are proving to be super hard for me. I dont know why. Maybe cause they are so large that it feels weird to me. Im not sure. I know i need to practice more.
>>
>>29496667
The eyes aren't as much of a problem as that "muzzle" is. I use quotes because there isn't really a muzzle there and she looks more like an anthro than an actual pony. Don't take that too hard, you're not bad at this, you just need to study anatomy. Go to the OP and click on the pony tutorials so you know how to draw muzzles better.

Do you have a way to break through and keep drawing? I haven't drawn in probably a good year(aside from a few small instances), but am entering a design course in less than two weeks.

Honestly if you need to be motivated to draw then you probably need to reevaluate why you're in this. If I waited until inspiration to hit me to draw I would have got no-where.

But if you need ideas take some time before your drawing session to look at your favorite artists and illustrations. If you just need a reason to draw something take an image you like and try to copy. Whether it be the pose, color, style, or whatever. Get your arm moving and make marks on the canvas.
>>
>>29503195

>>29503105
>>29503146
My art senpai told me to make it recently and it's given me focus. I had so many art waifus and he told me to narrow it down to this chart and it's given me something measurable to strive for. But yeah, look around and find out what you really love.

It doesn't even have to be something you enjoy overall. Can pick something out and say, "Hey, this guys colors aren't as good as x artist but I could masturbate for hours at his lines." Once you pick some pieces out, if you like it strive for it. But don't study where they are, study what steps they took to get there. And try to pick some artists that aren't just the top 20 generic tumblr, DA, or artstation artists either. Look to their influences, and their influences before them. You might even find something special in the art even the artist you like missed and gain the potential to be an even better version of yourself.
>>
>>29503105
Actually yeah. I like to watch movies on the side of my screen (split 1/3 netflix/youtube with 2/3 photoshop or firefox) and sometimes I just draw my emotions out. I know it sounds really fucking emo but mental illness or any kind of emotional trouble is a great motivator (unfortunately).
>>29503146

it's not that. I enjoy the discipline that comes from drawing every day, and I have been doing just that for the past few months. recently I just realized I had been doing something wrong the whole time and it made me realize i'm missing some key beginner knowledge, but I don't feel like picking up a book on drawing.

>>29503223
Music does well for me, but I have such a one-track mind that any kind of visual stimulus would throw me off so terribly. I'm low-key jealous of lucky folk like you desu.

Thanks for the tips, it's sometimes just good knowing others have the same problems at times.
>>
>>29503244
I do most of my figure and perspective studies traditionally. More enjoyable for me because my lines are better traditionally.

>>29503261
>>29503270
Go for it. Making the art you want to make, or taking steps towards it, helps make drawing in general more fun too. tfw I have a onetrack mind too. It's been a god thing in my experience though. Once you really get a block-in down you can push yourself to render by doing something fun like throwing up an audiobook. I used to hate rendering until I found out I can actually do that without losing too much focus. Aside from Barge studies it's also given me some intensive to really hone in on an actual step-by-step workflow.
>>
>>>29503223
>i can't draw unless it uses my full concentration. do i have autism?

Everyone has their own workflows and tendencies. Personally I'm at my best when I'm listening to a movie or a podcast. I can draw for hours and just get lost in it all. I can't listen to music and draw because it's distracting. The hangouts are also a good thing that helps me focus but I haven't been able to do them often because #normielife.

Learning to draw has been an experience in discovering the type of person I am who I never knew existed.
>>
>>29503244

I prefer paper and ballpoint pen but I experiment with all mediums. Digital, watercolor, oils, colored pencil etc. But my favourite is pen and ink.
>>
>>29503261

I have to make myself some schedule. Is drawing for 2/3 hours a day and 4+ at the weekend ok? I think I can stick to that. I really enjoy it when I do it but I have really hard time starting. But when I get the idea it just flows.
>>
>>29506564
Do what fits your schedule. Some of us sit on our asses all day and draw for literally 12 hours and some only have an hour or less to keep it up. Like if you work 60 hour work weeks or something nuts, don't feel bad; if you really do gotta go fast though, you can draw on your boss's dime
>>
>>29506564

Personally I only have time for around 2-3 hours of drawing per day. The important thing is that you're performing the act of physically drawing everyday. And when you can't draw, try to make observations about the world around you. See the world as if you're going to paint or draw it.
>>
>>29506564

While I'm at it, if you're interested, reply to this post and the last two digits are the palette you have to use to draw whatever you want.

Easy mode: draw a pony with a similar palette
Hard mode: create an OC with the palette

I'm rolling for hard mode
>>
>>29512050
Those are some nice palettes.
Surely drawing a non-OC would be the Hard Mode as there's likely not gonna be a pony for each palette.

Also, rolling. Maybe I'll get a nice one and feel like drawing for it.

Really? I was wincing at the idea of having to put that horrible red into an otherwise lovely set. I guess I could just use it for eyes and sparingly as focus points, but geez, it's such a harsh red against the rest of them and I feel like relegating the constrasting colour to eyes is a cop-out.

Okay here's mine. I made a pony whose special talent is entomology but she's afraid of all bugs other than butterflies.
>>29513365
I never even started but I'll start it tonight, I promise. Do you guys want pony, griffons, or both?
>>29513381
Well you kind of combined the wrong parts together, to put it nicely. Like the head looks show style but the arms and legs totally do not. The limbs look emaciated but the torso and head don't. Does that make sense? You have to pick one or the other and then draw that.
>>29513394
Well I mean, just because it's /mlp/ doesn't mean I can't help you guys out. It doesn't mean I have to be a full on cunt (and the same goes for everyone else). I'm still being honest, I just know how to C&C without breaking hearts and more than anything I want to inspire and encourage and to see other artists to improve and do their best. I would say I'm positive and helpful because I'm honestly really depressed otherwise and helping you guys makes me honestly very happy. Because of these threads I've made a decision to try and teach art at community colleges or something in a few years if I can.

Welp. I was #44. I wanted to get into it, but troubleshooting brushes and trying to find a fix for shoelacing that wasn't buying Lazy Nezumi soured that. Hopefully after a nap I can try again. RIP
>>
>>29513536
There are free programs like Fire Alpaca if that helps? I'm sorry you had so much trouble; it wasn't meant to break you down :(
>>
>>29513545
I already own the full Adobe Creative Suite, so I don't really want to not use it. And I'm sure shoelacing in general won't kill my drawings(hasn't in the past, it's just noticeable when testing brushes and making plain strokes). But it still became an annoyance.
And don't worry about it. I got farther than I have in a couple months. I'm just as hard as soil in an earthquake, so I get thrown off easily.

But I'm gonna keep coming here as it's a nice thread. Hopefully I can get onto something soon.
>>
>>29513590
Well I'm very happy you like the thread and that you've improved! If you want, you can submit traditional media drawings (graphite, charcoal, marker etc); we can help you with that too. Either way you're always welcome here.

I've been too spoiled by the magic of modern technology. Traditional is like some kind of archaic magic to me now. But yes, this is a nice thread. I've popped in and out over the past as it's a good place for inspiration.

>>
>>29513647
I would if I were you, but it is your choice in the end. If you want to do something in the middle, draw a new one maybe doing different parts than you did there. Wow that was a garbage sentence, hope you can interpret it, haha
>>29513621
I know that feel. It's all on you how and when you wanna improve. If you think you can only do so digitally then go ahead and do it; however, I'd just carry a sketchbook and a nice mechanical pencil and eraser around and try that for a bit.

Thanks mate. I couldn't think of what to do with the yellow color other than some reflected light that makes no sense. I'm not happy with how muddy the far eye turned out and its really glaring in the thumbnail. Not too happy about the silhouette either and I think making the horn longer would have brought it out more.

I lose my patience if I render for too long and this hit my limit.

You have to push yourself. Draw everyday even if you don't want to. You have to -become- a person that can get good at art. Focus on your fundamentals and getting things to look right. Don't be afraid to slow down.

I drew only heads for months before moving onto bodies. It was only this month that I started drawing bodies/legs more and focusing on colors. This Luna took me around two hours and to me that was a bit too long. I got hung up on a few things that i felt I shouldn't have but it's something I just have to work on. Speed will come with time.

Think of the artist you're going to be 5 years from now. If you keep pushing it the artist you are now is going to be totally unrecognizable.

>>29514619

You need to consider what >>29514685 is saying. A lot of show vectors are dog-shit ugly. They can make for nice ideas for poses but shouldn't be copied on a 1:1 scale. You seriously need to use the resources in OP and practice from those or practice from other artists who know what they're doing.

Another tip is to draw smaller and make thumbnails. It'll help with proportions and proportions are KEY to making ponies that look good. And not just over-all proportions, every feature has to be proportioned just right or the entire pony will look fucked.
>>
>>29514702
Like I always say, a bad reference is not a good excuse for drawing something improperly. It's on you to find good references and a great place to start learning is in the OP's pony anatomy gallery. I've told you this a dozen times, but you need to go through it and use them and teach yourself a bit. That's how I learned how to draw ponies and I think you can do it too because right now you're not applying yourself as much as you could be. I've already done about 10 redlines for you and they aren't making you better, you're just staying the same. I really hate having to make this kind of speech to anyone, but if you want to get better only YOU can apply yourself.

Please look at every image in this gallery and use it to learn how to draw ponies: http://imgur.com/a/m7zQ2

>>
If anyone wants a collection of most of the angles on a female pony, I can get them from that one resources leak a while ago
>>
>>29514702
>>29514724

And just to add on to this I only really use show ponies for expressions and mane referencing.
>>
>>29514747
It can't hurt, sure go ahead
>>
>>29514685
It'd be good if you could give me some sort of hint about what makes something a "bad vector", because that one looks fine to me, and I've rejected quite a few references for not looking quite right.

>>29514702
I started out drawing thumbnails, and I was told that that was wrong.

>>29514724
I do use that gallery, mostly for bone structure and general shapes, including manes/tails and eyes. I only used the vectors for the poses; you can see quite a few places where the poses don't quite match because something in the vector didn't make sense to me when I was drawing it.

I've also been trying to incorporate feedback from the redlines and general feedback, such as giving the manes more volume, lowering the muzzle, straightening the muzzle, grounding the hooves, using a skeleton, and so forth.

>>29514830
>I was told that that was wrong.

There is no right or wrongs as long as you're making attempts. Drawing small has its benefits but can be a detriment and a bad habit. You gotta strike a balance. Drawing small is good for getting the bigger picture down. Then you can scale up.

The problem I have is that you post something and say nothing to follow up about it. You need to be making your own observations and voicing them so we can get an idea of what your mindset is like. You don't -have- to draw full bodies if you dont want. Focus on the head and facial feature placement if you want. Or whatever. Drawing the whole pony can be a big task because you're spreading out your knowledge kind of thin.
>>
Every time I practice or try to draw a bunch of heads, it looks like a horrifying abomination.

Every time I go "fuck it" and dive right into some big project, it looks passable.

This is frustrating.
>>
>>29514865
Alright. I've been making observations myself, but not posting them here.

>>29514619
I think the bottom of her chin is still a little bit flat, and I'm not sure I did her mouth right. Her nose seems a bit pointed, but they seem a bit pointed on the show too. Her mane seems pretty lumpy and thin, especially the part on her neck. I'm still not happy with her raised leg, and I think her left foreleg is too short and/or not tapered enough. Something about her wings seem off, but the gallery doesn't really have any detailed breakdown of how the wings work, so those were just copied from sight. I don't think her left hind leg is "bunched up" enough; it just looks like her right hing leg is arbitrarily longer. Her right hind hoof should probably be tilted more as well, so that the end of the leg looks more rounded. I'm also having difficulty judging where the legs would be connected on the far side of the pony, though I've been trying to use the rule of thumb that the legs should be about as long as the diameter of the head.

Here's what I have right now, losing a lot of time just trying to fix the hair (gonna remove all the messy lines now). Do the cutie mark and then do the outline, which I am still trying to figure out how I'll do.

How do you guys do the outline for the body?
>>
>>29514998
I would use the darkest color for an outline. I chose not to have an outline because it was just a new stylistic choice that's more advanced than what some people are ready for, probably including you, unfortunately. You can't really tell what the body is doing because shes missing the lines. I think if you apply what you did to the tail with what you did to the mane, it'd look a lot better. The tail should also be a bit thinner where it comes out of the body. Her face is looking cute though!

Yeah. it was just a block in with a clone stamp to fill it in so I can paint out the detail instead of painting it in. Was an experiment kind of thing. I think the pony and the rocks around her are the only things I actually rendered. In the future I'll probably use it in moderation now that I know how it works.

>>29516295
Nahh, it's cool. I made fun of myself for it too. I was like a child that found a new toy and abused the shit out of it. desu I like general critique more like this than nitpicky stuff. I'm used to it painting with Russians.

It's just more comfortable with me. I just get frustrated when I start with lines if it makes you feel any better. When I do them I'll block in a silhouette first and line over that. I kind of think in 3-D while I do it so I block in simple shapes with a hard round as if I'm making a messy low poly dynamesh in zbrush. and then work my way down. It's kind of why sometimes I'll recommend actually doing some stuff in 3-D while learning 2-D so you develop the mindset faster.

Think I'm done with this now though.

You need to use the guides instead of references from the show. Right now you're basically just doing contour drawings that aren't teaching you anything. I know you're using joints and shit, I can see that, but they're not helping you.

You need to study more and like I said here: >>29514724
you need to go through the guides here: http://imgur.com/a/m7zQ2 and study them. And when I say study I mean try out every single one you can until you've got this down.

I've gone through every image in that album several times already, so I'm not sure what you're saying. I was told earlier to find different poses to draw, so that's what I did. Are you saying that I should only draw the poses in that gallery? Because some of the stuff there is just flat-out wrong.

I like what you did with this because it was a tough palette for ponies, you know? (well of course you know) And I like that outline choice too
>>29521000
Then I can't help you. If you've honestly tried every single one of the guides then there's nothing I can do for you. I've done a good amount of crits and redlines but sometimes I can't help everyone and I'm sorry.
>>29521080
Haha, that palette was made for you. I think her limbs are a tad long and her left thigh is sticking off her body a bit too much but you did a good job with it
>>
>>29521791
I obviously didn't draw from every single one of them; my ponies don't have cocks. But I've been going through the album and referring to the guides that apply to what I'm currently drawing. I've been consistently using them for proportions and joint anatomy, for instance.
>>
>>29521858
The gallery is good for referencing but it's poorly organized and if you don't know where to look you'll probably struggle. I suggest looking at general drawing fundamentals (see /ic/ sticky). I can't really tell your skill level or experience from what you drew so far, so it's just a suggestion though
>>
>>29521858
I think mostly you have to have patience. I've been drawing ponies for 5-6 years myself and it took me that long to get where I am now. I don't know how long you've been drawing ponies but you really have to give it time and if I remember right, you only started recently (if I'm wrong, I apologize, I have memory problems)? I am doing my best with you though, okay? I consider myself a patient person but only if everyone I try to help can be patient too.
>>29521911
>The gallery is good for referencing but it's poorly organized and if you don't know where to look you'll probably struggle.
I won't disagree here but I've not found many people having a tough time finding the good guides. Maybe I should make a smaller gallery of the guides that actually work.
>>
>>29521933
Maybe I'm wrong but I think there's a certain way to learn that's most efficient. If the gallery was organized in that way it would be much easier to use. Don't take my word for it though. It would be pretty time consuming too
>>
>>29521976
I could take next weekend to try it, but that's not -my- gallery - like I didn't make it nor do I remember who does own it. I made my own gallery of some good poses for people with a few of the guides but I can't find the link to it, I'm sorry :B
>>
>>29521933
I started drawing seven weeks ago. I'm trying to be patient, and I don't expect to become a master overnight. I'm just frustrated because it seems like a lot of the advice I've gotten here has been either vague and unhelpful or contradictory. Just being told that a reference is "bad" is useless if I'm not also told WHY it's bad so I can pick better ones in the future.
>>
>>29522037
Well if it doesn't help you then you should find somewhere or someone who can. 7 weeks is a drop in a pail and not everyone in this thread knows how to properly C&C for others.
>>
>>29521911
>>29522006
I tend to look through it until I find something that might help me, and if that's the case I just save it into my reference folder
>>
>>29522037
Also you have to realize you haven't been studying art or drawing for 20 years. You do not know the fundamentals and you're confused about this stuff. I honestly think you need to practice drawing other things before you just get on ponies. You are just going to be frustrated because there is nothing I can really do for you. I can't teach you these things I learned from decades of studying and practicing constantly and neither can anyone else here. You can keep trying but I'm not going to be able to do anything for you.
>>
>>29522098
I got the impression from your posts that you thought I wasn't improving and were getting impatient with me, and thought that was my fault; that's what I was reacting to. If that's not how you meant it to come across, I'm sorry; that's my bad for failing to read your tone through text.
>>
>>29522178
Oh, no I'm sorry. I do my best to be patient and helpful for everyone but I misunderstood your situation. I think you -have- improved but I don't think I can really help much else anymore because it seems you have sort of stalled and I think you should study general drawing things like line, space, form, etc. Again I'm really sorry I don't think I can help you much more. None of my tones from my messages have been angry or anything, but sometimes I get frustrated, sure. I'm not frustrated right now nor then though.
>>
>>29522215
What was it that you misunderstood?
I think I could use some more references that show bone positions for different poses.
>>
>>29522390
I misunderstood how much drawing/art teaching you've had. And I don't think you should really bother with ponies for a while so you can learn about, you know, real art first

>>
>>29526158
Palette challenge should be more strict - no black\white or any other colors at all, even on the background, no gradients and opacity changes, hard flat colors only. The point is to draw complete picture using your palette only.
>>
>>29526398

Nah. I'll do the challenge however I see fit. I have some personal rules that I'll alibied to but this about having fun while getting out of my comfort zone.

Probably not now but I'm thinking one of these days for folk that want to learn to paint well a challenge where you block-in draw a poner or scene as of it was a really low poly render is really good for getting into it.
Hardmode could be subdivide the picture 2-3 times more.

Rolling this for an OC.
>>
>>29527734
Not a terrible choice for an OC.
>>29526903
That's an interesting palette too
>>
To anyone read for the next palette, I've already written up a more comprehensive rules page with 4 options and I'll fix the palette later tonight.

Do a palette challenge mixed with the 4chan board challenge that was in previous threads

>4chan board challenge in previous threads
Could you remind me of that? Obviously I totally know what you're talking about but maybe others don't
>>
>>29527844
Also I found someone who did some really cool palette challenges as examples of what one could do. If you're not this good, don't feel bad, we're all at different skill levels.
>>
>>29526868
Id be down for this honestly. I've made attempts before but I think a lack of anatomy knowledge made it more difficult than anything. I get the idea of separating planes with different values but the mental-block was always a lack of how to shape the planes.
>>
>>29526896
Yeah, I agree. Palete is fine. Skilled guys can go for shading stuff and people as me can just try to combine colors to make a good looking simple pone.
But now when I feel more confident I think I try any challange.

Are they complete shit or should I work more in this direction? My plan is to draw all mane six - just heads - and try to make them different from each other.
>>
>>29528693
Oh that's more of a Drawfag thread challenge, not really for the improvement thread, but if people want to do that one they can. I'm just putting up a new palette challenge in the next thread.
>>29528373
The palettes will be a lot better because I picked them out from hundreds instead of just trusting someone elses palettes that were apparently for landscapes(?)
>>29529138
Not shit, just be careful where you place the eyes and muzzle and maybe you should draw bodies attached so there's more for us to see where/if you're going wrong.

Oh wait, I HAVE done one of these. I got /m/ and we had this challenge 5-6 weeks ago so I'm not going to bother with it but other people can if they want.

And here's the results. I think I need to try some silhouettes to get anatomy down better.
>>
>>29529354
Mostly you need to use higher opacity if you're going to do lineless stuff, but whatever you wanna do
>>
>>29529219
Maybe I'll do some simple poses with them. Maybe sitting/standing. I really love how other artists makes muzzles and I want to learn it to. I should develop some guidlines just for me. Now when you pointed it out I see Twi's eyes are higher then Flutters.
