Windsheer circled lazily around the lake, enjoying the warm air pushing up against his feathers. Having spent a week scavenging, he was ready to relax and enjoy some peace at his cabin. At least for the day, tomorrow he would need to clear out the brush that had grown up in his absence. For now though, he contented himself with the lazy no flapping joy of a thermal, far from anyone who might get adventurous thoughts with a gun. It’d been a while since he had left Calamity, since the Enclave had fallen, but he felt it was still a good idea to not meet the family yet. The pony on the radio spoke highly of him as an element of loyalty, something he found darkly for his traitorous little brother. The thoughts weight heavily on the tan pegasus, his body reflexively gliding to follow his head down toward the water’s surface.
Flaring his wings, Windsheer slid into the water, pushing up a small wake as he went. One of the few things he had picked since that day in Manehattan was how to swim, something he rather enjoyed doing. For now, he contented himself with treading water and floating about sunning himself. He lost himself in the pleasantness of the situation, not paying attention to the stirring in the grass at the far end of the pond.

Windsheer glided through the water, legs pushing hard even as they moved so slowly. Coming down from the clouds he had seen how little he could do with them. Unsurprisingly, when everything weighs as much as a cloud, you can’t really develop much muscle mass moving them. Oh sure, his endurance was pretty good for a pegasus, but he had been outrun by a unicorn foal simply by collapsing panting on their makeshift track. That was not the best way his introduction to the town of Mill Run could have gone, all the more so when they thought he was suffering heat stroke from the cloak he was wearing. Fortunately, showing a foal could out pace him had stayed any sort of retribution on finding his wings.

What good wings they were too. Windsheer proudly flared them out on the water as he went, the trailing edges leaving small wakes in the water. A long line of distinguished ponies came from them. Not the fastest ponies, but every one of them had been able to meet Wonderbolt standards for reserve duty. Still, it didn’t really matter on the ground anymore. What mattered here was a willingness to help in any way you could, all the more so if it meant a certain disregard for personal wellbeing. How they figured the Enclave invading would be a problem was beyond the stallion. The mudd – Wastelanders had already sent him out to kill a score of “raiders” that had camped too close to town. They didn’t look all that different from the ponies in town. Same grime coated pelt, mutilated ears, jewelry, they even had heads on pikes around their camp, just like the front gate warning signs.

Wasteland politics, something Wind Sheer needed to work out before he ran into some real raiders that tried wearing him like an alicorn. Wind Sheer ducked his head underwater and screamed at the thought, bubbles frothing around his mouth as he vented his fear at the idea. A crawdad stared back at him and raised its claws and returned the gesture, its tiny body shaking as it tried to yell louder. Wind stared perplexed, unsure what to do, when he suddenly remembered breathing was important and reared back up gasping.

What to do:
A) There’s a little bit of Fluttershy in us all, clearly the crawdad can be a friend
B) Friends can be food, look at griffons and bird ponies!
