Interesting character concept, completely fucking ruined by a successive series of the worst possible writing choices imaginable.

She's terribly written. There hasn't been one episode where she actually realised for HERSELF (gonna stress that again, HERSELF) that she needs to improve as a pony.
It's always been someone else telling her she was a piece of shit. Mostly Twilight, but Luna too in the finale.
Glimmer has little in the way of development for herself, she's forced to do everything by other characters.
Compare that to Sunset who, even though the Mane 6 accepted her reform, the rest of the school had not. That made her realise her mistakes. Glimmer just got instantly accepted by everyone. Her fears of going back to evil are bogus because nobody actually treats her like she would.

She COULD have been an interesting character, but every single writing choice about her has been stupid as fuck. They even brought Trixie back as a prop solely to try and make more easily-pleased mouthbreathers associate Trixie with Glimmer.

There are no sane Glimmer fans. They come in three types: Stupid Glimfags that don't understand why what she does and is are bad, cloppers whose opinions are irrelevant because other characters are hotter, and "le funny 9gag trolls" who think annoying people by being retarded "Ironically"=trolling. Sane intelligent people can't love her.

She also shits on pre-S5 canon.

If she's naturally good at magic, the Element of Magic would have gone for her, not Twilight. As for the "But friendship" argument, Starlight had a friend, and cared about him so much she went nuclear when he left her, never stopping her childish temper tantrum or growing up from that filly age. Meanwhile, Twilight had no friends as a filly, except for her big brother. Then she went to school and eventually made friends there, then left them behind to go to ponyville and meet the other Elements. Twilight is supposed to be the most magical legendary chosen one unicorn, hence why Celestia took her in and trained her.

As canon currently stares, Starlight Glimmer is more magical than Twilight, stronger than her as an Alicorn, and cared more about friendship as a foal. So... yeah, according to this current shitstain we call Jim's contributions to the show, Starlight should have been the Element of Magic, not Twilight. Obviously. So, we can't exactly have Twilight as the Chosen One when Starlight is the Chosen One Plus 999999. Have you figured this out yet?

Hmm. Okay, let me try and explain the major points:

Originally she was okay as a villain, but my first major disappointment was that she turned out to be just another self-serving liar who used force and brainwashing rather than someone who actually believed in true equality. She could've been an interesting ideological enemy to the M6 - someone who genuinely believes in going about things a different way. Using external enchanted instruments (i.e., the staff) instead of individual magic, and so on.

So then we get to the Cutie Re-Mark. Hoo, boy, those episodes... four big problems there:

One, it goes without saying that her original motivation was something I found lackluster; the idea that she literally went on to basically violate ponies' core magic because she was lonely as a kid and apparently couldn't use the mail system was either a sign of a seriously deranged mind or just plain bad writing. Given the lack of any follow-up for the former, I'm going with the latter.

Two, the running duel. I'd be willing to buy that Starlight won because she was prepared for the duel and strategically burned down Twilight's magic reserves, whereas Twilight was just flailing about unprepared for magical combat - but, the show never even mentions that; she just somehow does. Even if that was mentioned, how Starlight ever got that good in the first place is a total mystery. Was there a magic academy in Our Town? Another alicorn Starlight got years of tutoring from somewhere? An Alicorn-amulet-esque artifact she was powered up by?

Three, we get to the wasteland bit. Twilight shows her this empty wasteland, Starlight somehow goes on to believe that this is the result of her actions, and completely gives up her long-held ideal of Equality... except, nothing about the wasteland actually says that. It says that unexpectedly fucking with one of Equestria's prime defenses is a bad idea, but not the idea of markless equality on its own.

In fact, there is direct evidence that it's quite possible to get by without cutie marks - both Griffons and Saddle Arabians do fine without them, and arguably Changelings before they got fucked over too. Yet Starlight just falls in line. Another missed opportunity to have her be an ideological opponent - giving up her violent, hostile ways to use the tenets of friendship, but still in the goal of ultimate equality. She could've turned into a sort of "friendly rival", opposed in principle but not actually hostile.

Lastly, there's the complete and total lack of fallout for Starlight's actions. Let me be clear: I didn't expect them to kill her, torture her, just throw her in Tartarus for eternity or something... but that she's immediately welcomed by virtually everyone, including the Our Town ponies (who last saw her as she was literally trying to murder them) really makes it feel like the writer has a thumb on their actions. Some kind of reaction - some hostility until she earned her redemption, some legal repercussions (even if it's literally just court-mandated friendship lessons with her magic dampened) was sorely needed.
Now, moving on: The mind-control episode gives us a reprise of the lack of real fallout; one yelled lecture from Rainbow Dash and they're ready to give Starlight yet another chance. To a lesser degree, we also again raise the question of 'where the fuck did Starlight learn this stuff?'

The S6 finale has its own mountain of problems, not all of which relate to Starlight. Suffice to say I was disappointed by the way the plot was contrived to make her the only one who can save everything, and even more when she alone was congratulated for the results - when in fact it was as much Trixie and Thorax's (and from him, Spike's) actions that set the stage. It felt like another reward just for being a "good guy", rather than something earned.


More of a wall of text than I meant for, but that's where I stand regarding Starlight.

I don't know. Season 5 is one of my favorite seasons. Season 6 had some fantastic episodes but Glimmer was a giant stain upon the whole thing (and also many other problems generally).

I feel that Glimmer made an excellent villain. The idea that you can have a character that attempts to do exactly what the protagonist does but in a different way, which ends up leading to the conflict makes for great storytelling. The fact that she was just another pony really made her excellent too. Her origin of why she handles friendship really gave her a sense of reason to exist in the story, and I thoroughly enjoyed her antics and emotional moments in the S5 Finale

However, I don't like what she is now. I believe that a character like her would never have become reformed, it doesn't feel natural to me, and I would've expected her to naturally stay caught up in her own ways because its all she knows. Yah, it's true that she doesn't do a bad job filling the role as Twilight's student, but, I've been saying from season 3 that Trixie would've made an excellent student and would've filled the student roll even better in my opinion, due to Trixie's history and "rivalry" with Twilight.

Essentially, villain Glimmer was incredible. Reformed student Glimmer is ok however I would rather have student Trixie, and Glimmer remain a villain.
