There's not supposed to be modern designs for cars in Equestria, and having gasoline engines just raises questions.

It's fine to have reservations about these art design choices, but it's hypocritical to act like they're a recent development when they've existed since Season 1.

The thing that irked me about the derby episode was the shitty double figure 8 racetrack. Like what the fuck, how hard is it to draw a hill? There's plenty of topography within ponyville they could have worked with, but no let's just have them drive gravity driven vehicles on a flat fucking surface and even better let's put a fucking intersection in there like it's hotwheels or something.

It just makes me think they must have done it for a cancelled racetrack toyline that didn't do well in testing.
