I doubt Hasbro had some kind of master plan that would eventually get them the Disney Princesses franchise. It is more Mattel that shot themselves in the foot by creating something that proved to be direct competition to Disney's own franchise. There was also the issue of Barbie's sales declining, which made Disney think they wouldn't be able to give Disney's franchises the attention they are due. Sure, Ever After High was successful, but it came at the price of losing Disney's merchandising deal. It also came out in 2013, which is the same year that EqG came out, which leads me to think that Mattel only heard rumors that Hasbro was coming up with a new franchise, so they felt the need to create a new franchise themselves, and quickly at that. I listened to the entire Investor's webcast because I have nothing to do.

MY LITTLE PONY FIM sales increased across all major areas and they also saw good profit from PLAYSKOOL MY LITTLE PONY (it's a new line of tiny ponies with big heads that are too big for toddlers to swallow), but the Equestria Girls toyline took a bit of that and nearly offset all of that growth, and the Girl's category all around suffered from a sharp decrease in Furby too, which was atleast a expected drop, the EQG drop was not foreseen and thus hurt more expectations.

EQG Mini dolls so far have been selling well, but CEO points out that they have to wait and see to see if they'll keep selling even after the "new thing high" ends.

No talks about the MLP show itself, but Hasbro commented that they've been able to make some good deals Worldwide with streaming services and are selling more episodes of ther shows, which lead to an increase in profitablity from their cartoon studio. For the first time they're making profit directly from the sale of the shows they made instead of just from the toys the shows helped sell, so they will look into investing more money into media production in the future.

Licensing for My Little Pony also got good numbers in 2015, it's right now one of their biggest licensing brand and is right up there in popularity worldwide with Transformers, which is amazing since it's really rare for a brand without a theatrical movie to have as much licensing going for it as one that does.

TL;DR

FIM toys, show and the toys for toddlers are selling really well even after all those years.

EQG sold like shit, but even then they're willing to see if the new toyline based on it does well or not instead of taking any harsh decisions right now.

In 2016 they start selling toys of the Disney Princess rights they got too, so CEO's admitedly not too worried about EQG's dolls failing since they have another doll brand now too.

EQG cannot make that claim by any means.

I'd honestly be disappointed. Rainbow Rocks and Friendship Games were decent. I'm interested to see if they could pull off another decent one, or even make something good.
Really, I'd miss Sunset Shimmer and dorky Twilight the most if they cut EqG. Sunset Shimmer is fleshed out and dorky Twilight could be pretty interesting.
EqG has potential to be a success. It's a spin-off of a successful tv series with a good writing staff and a huge fanbase behind it. It'll be a real shame to see the series go, especially when it was starting to get good.
