Don't even bother to say by threatening war, that would only serve to piss off every single one of our allies, and Congress would never go through with it.

Besides, if we were ever to go to war in Mexico, it should be to curb the cartels, nothing more.

Again, it doesn't matter how much or how little he gives a shit.

He still needs to get things done, and he can't do that without Congressional support.

Congress would never approve of acting that aggressively towards an allied government, especially if it means a war that could lead to fighting on American soil.

If he somehow bypasses Congress, it means a breakdown of the balance of power between the political branches

>>26189014
It still takes time, money, materials, and workers to do so. Sure, a wall is easy enough to build for a small enough area, but a border that spans the length of multiple states becomes a massive undertaking, especially if it has to be strong enough to not be broken through, designed so it cannot be climbed over or dug under easily, and monitored enough so there are not any security breaches.

If it were a chainlink fence, sure, he might be able to pull it off relatively easily, but then it would not be able to do the job it's intended to do.
>>
>>26189014
It's not semantics, it's how you actually get something done. There are many metaphorical walls Trump would hit before he could build an actual one.

This. If Obama can abuse executive orders then so can we
>>
>>26189094
I'm not saying we can't.

The problem is that the Republican congress is constantly blocking any attempts to spend more money, and have threatened full shutdown of the government on multiple occasions. Their big platform the past few terms has been reduced government spending, and this is something that would bring about a significant increase in it.

>>26189104
That would work if it were Columbia, but Mexico has closer diplomatic relations with us, and more importantly they share a border with us. If conflict breaks out, it is entirely possible that we may see full-on warfare break out on American soil for the first time in decades, especially with cartel presence in the southwest.

Congress is far too slow on deciding things, and the dems in there will try to cockblock Trump at every turn. If people in this country actually had money to spend, it would help the economy because we wouldn't have 6 gorillion people living on the margins of society and drinking themselves to death because they have no financial future because people with 65 IQs like you need to spend 5 cents less on iPhones.

We have like half a dozen unconstitutional agencies running in the federal government that can be cut to ribbons, and the libs can go back to their drum circles and discuss banning the constitution or whatever the fuck they do now, who cares about them?

I'd rather have someone that has a platform that doesn't make congress feel obligated to cockblock at every turn. A better fit would be someone who leans more moderate, so they don't instantly divide on principle, and actually have the ability to make things happen.

Part of the issue with Congress right now is that they're so oppositely aligned with Obama that it's impossible for them to find a middle ground.
Finding someone that liberals have even a HINT of respect for would be much healthier for the GOP, as it would allow them to get more things pushed without having everything blocked by the opposition out of pure spite, like we see with the current administration.

Option B - product manufactured elsewhere, bought in America, costs less to buy than option A for the same product. Americans spend less money.

Demanding option A instead of option B is literally shoveling money from masses of people to a handful of factory workers. For the benefit of a few hundred American laborers, millions of American consumers are forced to waste their money. It's just wealth redistribution by another name.

Yes, but if those factory workers don't have jobs, then it means that they can't spend money to buy things and improve our economy.

Not to mention the fact that the manufacture of our goods in China gives the Chinese a degree of economic power over us.

That's not how economies work. Paying people more than they're worth doesn't make the economy better. Paying people to do unnecessary work doesn't make the economy better. Making things more expensive doesn't make the economy better.

Communism isn't going to work just because you add busy work to it. A job is nothing more than a component of a product, and a product must be sold at a profit in order to benefit the economy. A real job requires profit and profitability, otherwise it's just welfare and has a net negative impact on the economy. You'd literally be better off just handing those people freshly printed dollar bills and letting them buy cheap foreign products.

If people want jobs, there needs to be more opportunities for profitable business in the country, not more profit stolen by the government.
>>
>>26189624
Paying less to illegal immigrants doesn't make the economy better.
>>
>>26189624
Paying citizens for work makes the economy better, yes anon.

Cheaper goods doesn't help anyone if huge chunks of the nation aren't employed, or are facing unemployment thanks to shipping all their traditional jobs overseas.

>>26189615
What a cop-out, this country was founded on protectionist policies as a manufacturing country, that's how we got rich in the first place. The very moment we started signing free-trade deals is when wages stopped increasing, purchasing power dropped, and all the jobs that built the middle class vanished.

Free enterprise should benefit America, and there's plenty of means to ensure that it does, but once you remove any and all protections to safeguard our national wealth and prosperity then you've essentially signed our death warrant as a country, because there's literally no reason for the manufacturing states to stay in the union at this point when people like you crush their ability to survive.
>>
>>26189646
Yeah it does.
Economically, the concept of legal vs. illegal immigration doesn't exist. A laborer is represented by their cost and their produce. And a laborer who produces more, or costs less, is economically beneficial.

Only government intrusions make immigration an issue. I don't see "they don't pay taxes (ie. the government isn't robbing them properly)" to be a very compelling argument for eliminating a source of low cost labor.

You still aren't understanding - unemployment is better than employment that's just draining money from everyone who has a real job. Protectionism is literally the same thing as expanding public sector employment and welfare. Like I said, you're literally better off just giving people free money. If you're opposed to that, then logically you should be opposed to protectionism.

>>26189764
>Hurr durr, John Smith is a Marxist SJW, but at least he's also a whiny white moron who wants a $20 minimum wage. Thanks Obama.

That's completely retarded, what the fuck?

Protectionism is about ensuring that the actual citizens of this country can find work, and not be undercut by people living in the gutters of whatever desperate third world will work themselves to death for a few cents.

The deal is that if you're want to operate in America then you have to favor American workers. You wanna go to China and work there? Then leave, nobody will miss you, and good luck getting your goods into America.

By the way, this is basically how China operates. You think they aren't protectionist as fuck? Yeah right, all we do is send them money and we get nothing in return but rampant unemployment and stagnating wages with most of the country on the verge of bankruptcy should they incur a minor unexpected cost.

Yeah that sounds like a healthy economy that's totally not going to implode from the bottom up.

Err, and thats exactly what handouts do, and what you mean by real job?

Free trade is good for underdeveloped countries whitch is not the case of the USA.
>>
>>26189913
I've been explaining the situation over and over.
I'll try to make it even more simple for you.

An American is buying a product.
They can buy product A, made by Americans, that costs more.
Or they can buy product B, made by Hondurans, that costs less.
If you force them to buy A for whatever reason, then the net difference represents an additional expense exchanged for zero value.
That money is given to an American worker - who is making a product that is not necessary, because it already exists for less.

Hypothetical situation: instead of making people spend extra money for the benefit of American laborers, you just tax them the same amount and give it to the unemployed. The American consumer sees the same expense. The unemployed welfare recipient gets money - but also has lots more free time, which they could use for enjoyment or for some actual work that provides economic benefit.

Protectionist policies are literally welfare. The jobs are an illusion - a smokescreen so that you don't see what's really going on. You are being forced by the government to give up your money to someone else for no benefit - that is welfare, period.

And saying "China is protectionist" is at best an argument against protectionism, not for it.

I'm trying to wrap my mind around how retarded this is, so give me a moment.

Okay, so basically the US has built itself up as a manufacturing country that prided itself on granting it's workers the highest quality of life in the world, the American dream if you would, where a single man could support an entire family on 1 paycheck. This was the global ideal.

Now, we're traded that in so that the heads of corporations can send all their factories and means of production overseas, which makes the cost of goods cheaper. Now the cheaper cost of *some* goods get passed on to the American worker that now no longer can support their families, or themselves, on their newfound low wages, drastically cutting the purchasing power of their households, which encompasses every family under the upper middle class, who see a net gain to this because their employment is relatively unaffected, which is becoming less the case as H-1B visas get bigger.

So by selling out everyone who didn't make it into a certain wage tier with jobs that are unaffected by globalization, (none), we now have cheaper products that fewer people can buy because they no longer have the wages to afford them, but oh it's offset because we opened our doors to as much immigration, legal or otherwise, as the population itself never wanted so support these practices. So to offset this we need a gigantic welfare state to just hand people money so they can buy the products in question and maybe not die, so they can feed into the economy and sustain it until they vanish in favor of a more malleable ethnic group that might not get up and murder the people who are responsible for all of this.

This makes sense to you?

So you want a big government that tells corporations what they can and cannot do for the benefit of groups that are not them. That is not conservative, family.

But creating an enormous welfare state to sustain the population that can't exist under those policies is small government, right amigo?

Corporations are totally free to move to China and never come back if they want.
