Just accept the wings. At least now with wings we can have more plot for her. It was unnecessary, but it wasn't a completely bad choice. She's also the main character, gifted in magic, and is specifically sent to master the art of friendship, her getting wings was/is practically bound to happen at some point, best we can at least see them before the show official starts to die off(canceling, or simpsons type bullshit).

This Twilight can cast shields and laser beams like nothing. She is only weak when the plot requires it.

Well, if you think so, then fine. However for now, I still see Twilight's power as a logical progression from earlier. In S1, she wasn't an alicorn after all, and it has been made clear that alicorns have special magic and are probably more powerful than regular unicorns. And those 20 spells in S1 weren't basic considering that most unicorns seem to rarely be able to do more than telekinesis with their magic. I agree that this all makes Starlight a bit overpowered, but after all, Starlight likely specifically studied combat magic, while Twilight only has a basic grasp of it. Also notice that she has only been using lasers and shields since she became an alicorn.
