***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

== THICK MS GROUPBUILD ==

Build a kit of your choice that's heavily armored, and thick in the thighs/arms/torso/general area. Examples include:
>Dom + Dom Variants
>The O
>Virtue/Seravee Gundams
>Gusion/Man Rodis
>Full Armor gundams (If they're heavily armored, and not guns strapped everywhere like the FA Unicorn)

Non-Bandai kits are allowed, so feel free to whip out a Frame Arms kit or something and work with that as long as you make it thicc as fuck.

Start Date: 6/15
End Date: 8/31

SEND YOUR SHIT TO: [email protected]

Can a kit be gloss coated after a flat coat?
>>
So i started painting my first kit

I dont like how the kit feels with a matte finish. I actually didnt know it would turn out like this. I like the colors but not the feeling.

Is there a way to get it looking glossy without painting it again?

Matte finish gives me goosebumps and feels like sandpaper.

Different matte formulations have different kinds of coarseness.

Mr Hobby brand and Tamiya are very fine grained compared to other brands.

Well I go exclusively 1/144 for variety and because I'm a huge autist. I considered costs pretty early and went for great deals as they showed up on ebay to finish my collection early, desu. It's why I had a backlog for so long, I was buying them like mad while they were going for good prices. Now I just sit around waiting for something I want. It's great, you'll get there if you're a serious collector.

Cool.

Someone here on on /toy/ talked about their dad getting bewildered about paint jobs on a model or something, because his dad was used to reading up about the subject of the model in order to figure out how to paint it, rather than having sheer leeway on what to do decide.

Forgot if he gave his dad a gunpla or some racecar model or some scifi model at that time.

Technically neither is the Garupan stuff, the KanColle stuff, or the Aoki Hagane no Arpeggio stuff. It might be associated with girls but you don't get decals to itasensha up your Tiger, it's just the old mold with new decals and a license.

>>
>>15803661
>ground type Graze
Isn't this just a Graze Ritter painted in a different color? I'm pretty sure you could just buy a Graze Ritter kit and get the exact same result from painting it, unless these kits are somehow cheaper (and they're P-Bandai, so)
Still, I do like that we're getting more IBO kits.
>>
>>15803673
No. They have a bigger sword that goes onto the backpack, different feet, and the standard graze shoulders. The ritter could be equipped with ground type equipment though.

All of these parts you can get through the option packs so yeah it's pretty much just a recolor, which is pretty standard for p bandai stuff. It's for snap fags who don't paint.
>>
>>15803673
No. It's a normal Graze with the options parts from that one set that gives you the feet and the backpack from option set 9, the sword from option set 4, and the Ritter leg boosters.
>>
>>15803684
>>15803686
>Option set stuff
Hmm. Maybe I'll do some math and consider them then, I could always use more Grazes.
>>
>>15803673
>>15803684
>>15803686
>>15803687

It's also a two-pack, you get both kits. Which when you add the cost of needing to buy the multiple option packs it IS cheaper. So long as you live in Japan, and just want the Ground Type Graze and aren't interested in the other parts that come in the option sets.
>>
>>15803688
>tfw I'll never live in Japan
>>
>>15803693
I do.
I tend to be leery of P-Bandai stuff that's just recolors because they're usually overpriced between the normal colored kits being sold at discount prices from other retailers and P-Bandai's shipping costs, but this one might actually be a decent deal in the end for some Ground Type Grazes.

I know how this general reacts to greeble on custom kits but found this while looking for ideas to use on my own Turn X and thought it looked pretty neat. Wonder if the sentiment is shared or if you guys hate greeble on principle.
>>
>>15803714
That isn't overdone at all. You can tell what the kit is, and the details don't detract from it's silhouette or shape. I like it.

It's all about execution for me. Greeble is best when it adds to a piece and complements what it's on, not overwhelms and overshadows it.
>>
>>15803666
No Satan, I'm a poor fag so I use extrafine point Sharpie and alcohol wipes
>>
>>15803714
Depends on how much greeble and for what purpose.
That Turn X is clearly a stylistic choice, it's the kind of greeble you'd see on 70s scifi props like original Star Wars or Battlestar Galactica. While it doesn't serve a PRACTICAL purpose it has A purpose. The pattern on the legs even gives it a kind of "ancient aliens" vibe. It's neat in the way it uses greeble "artistically."

Greeble for the sake of greeble, just for simple "wow factor," is what's bad. When people just make kits as busy as possible (like a bayformer, or many GBWC winners), in those cases it's always just a obvious mask to cover up a total lack of any real creativity.

A few threads ago there were rants about bad weathering and overdoing decals. I gotta say, I only like weathering on dioramas, and most decals (even official ones that come with kits) are dumb.
>>
>>15803714
Like most modeling techniques, a lot of it comes down to how you use it. Unlike most kits that just pile on the greeble, I think this actually works well since it emphasizes the crazy tech level of the Turn X. It's not just detail for detail's sake, but reflects the nature of the suit's origins. It definitely feels reminiscent of Syd Mead's retro scifi aesthetic.

Someone clearly spent time thinking about it, whereas bad greeble for the Turn X would be throwing in a bunch of wires, pistons , or riveted panels everywhere.
>>
>>15803731
I agree that weathering tends to work best on dioramas, SOMETIMES it can work well enough on its own, but it just always looks better with some "context."

Decals like your pic are too busy, but I don't mind warning labels too much because I've actually seen real life military vehicles up close, and that shit isn't nearly as complex as a humanoid robot but are still COVERED in random warning labels and inspection stickers. Realistically a mobile suit would actually have warning labels on every single moving part, removable panel, and access point, it'd be just as bad as that pic if not worse minus the random text blocks on the shield.

Preshade as assembled as you can. For example, if a shoulder pad is made out of two pieces, assemble them loosely before doing the shading on them so that it matches decently once assembled properly.

Anons I have a question. I recently got a display case for my gunpla, but there is only one spot in my room where I can/could place it. Sadly this spot is partially in direct sunlight for 4 hrs of the day. This causes some kits to be in direct sunlight for an hour at most (with the sun shifting). Now the sun is going through the window glass, blinders that only partially block out the sun and then the glass of the display case. Should I be worried of my painted kits getting discolored or will they be fine?

>>
>>15804138
Honestly?

Schedule building time. it really works wonders if you're just not "feeling the mood". Even if you want to do only 30 minutes a day.

Now 30 mins isn't much time to accomplish much (unless you're only building an HG and you're not doing any painting)

but, and this is the important part, it does give you some sense of accomplishment. And you keep doing more little by little. Set a timer though. That way you know you're doing the full 30 and not stopping early or going over.

Because if you go over 30 minutes, then you could justify not having to do your 30 minutes tomorrow. And then you'll slip back into procrastinating again.

Then, after a week or two, increase your scheduled building time as you see fit. But never skip a day unless of illness or some other life reason preventing you from doing it

I lock his hand in place and put a gundam marker in it, and drag the panel lines against it forcing him to panel line it by his own hand. He screams in agony. Stick to acrylics. Enamels and lacquers fuck up brushes if you don't know what your doing,

The valejo line has a ton of awesome Primers that are acrylic. I think Tamiya does too but they are rattle can only. MR primer is really good but be sure to get a laquer based thinner to clean your brush.

You a 1000Grit Sandpaper and sand down the part you want. Not hard just make sure its got some cuts to it. The primer you use will clean out the cuts while sticking to the plastic giving you a nice flat finish. From there its what you want to do.

For beginners try to use a towel. The thinning ratio is normally "like milk" Which means you want the paint to be sorta like jello or a smoothie. Basically you don't want watery paint. Take a drip of paint and put it on the towel. If it spider webs out that means the paint is very thine and wont stick. If it just globs that means the paint is to thick. This is a good trick to learn thick from thin.

And lastly onto enamels. You can hand paint Enamels but don't use them for Armour pieces. Use them for fine details like gold parts, Pistons, that sort. But never put Enamel on a base coated acrylic.

I can't be snapshit if I actually sand nubs, panel line, seam wield and occasionally paint my kits.

I just like HG's more since I like displaying all my kits together, and having one be much larger than the rest will really bother me.
Besides, I'm a college student without much extra spending money so spending $15 to 20 every month or two on a new kit feels a lot better for me than dropping $80 or so on an MG.

i'd do it inside but the smell is pretty bad and i don't live alone
>>
>>15805076
Well, you need to paint if you seam weld.

Painting isn't too bad. You could start with some spray cans and see how you like that.

Airbrushing is much cheaper in the long run, you just need to pay $100+ up front.

>>15805083
>die
No, but it's not good. Paint outside if you want, but get a suitable respirator asap.
>>
>>15805076

Spray cans.

>>15805083

Get a respirator, trying not to breath fumes in gets tiresome after a while.
>>
>>15805076
short answer: read the guide
long answer: watch some youtube videos and get yourself a bottle of cement. for painting, vajello is a really good brand for hand brushing details.

At least you aren't buying them from that one amazon seller that adds the trading cards and jacks the price up to a ridiculous sum. In some cases you'll end up paying more for the card than for the kit itself.

Just be aware that you will probably not be able to pose it with the shield without it leaning a lot, and I do hope you have an action base for it.

Also, be prepared for the toes to randomly pop off. Other than that it's an all right kit.
>>
>>15805399
Holy shit you have to tape off pieces? How often/why do you have to do that, because that turns me off to painting big time.
>>
>>15805488

Depends on the color separation. Basically, if a kit has a ton of stickers and you want it show accurate, it would be quite a bit (unless its small details that you should handbrush), but it can also be very rarely.

I have painted 10+ kits and I only felt the need to mask on two of them so far.
>>
>>15805500
So you'd be taping off areas so you can paint them the sticker color? Sorry, I don't really understand the purpose of why you tape.
>>
>>15805479
I ordered the special Sinanju AB so it can be posed on that next to the Unicorn on the Unicorn AB, I did my homework. Supposedly the kit is absolutely beautiful and would be perfect if it wasn't such a hand grenade.
>>
>>15805507
To boil it down to an incredibly simple scenario for you- imagine you have an arm that is half white, half black. If you try to spraypaint/airbrush it plain. you'll find it near impossible to get a nice clean line down the middle with one half black, one half white.
But if you paint it white, then tape off the right side you can paint the left side black and you now have an arm that is half white half black with a perfect line down the middle that looks nice.

The bottom-line for tape is pretty simple- do you want to paint one solid part more than one color?
If the answer is Yes, you need tape.
If you're going to paint each separate part one color, then you don't need tape.
Here's a quick visual example to hopefully help.
The arm on the left doesn't need tape. The arm on the right needs masking tape.
>>
>>15805550

No Tape vs Tape color.png
12KB, 335x323px
>>15805559
Glad to help. Just to make sure everything is fully explained, here's both arms in the same colors. The elbow piece is a separate armor piece that can be taken off and sprayed separately, so it can be painted a different color. Same with the hand. But the main arm is mostly one big piece, so it can only be one color without tape.
Hand painting follows different rules but then hand-painting is a whole different bag of worms and can be difficult to do. You'll still want masking tape even if you do hand painting, though. That little orange sliver on the right arm is something you'd have to mask even if you handpainted it.

Some backstory for each of the units if it'll help you decide:

The X1 is piloted mainly by Seabook from F91. Eventually he retires from active duty and gives it to Tobia, the main protagonist of Crossbone. It's eventually upgraded into the Full Cloth to act as the main fighting force against a Jupiter Empire fleet guarding a colony laser. The skull emblems on the Full Cloth's shoulders are alternating i-field generators. The X1 is eventually destroyed in the battle, but succeeds in its mission.

The X2 is piloted by Zabine from F91. He chose to equip a shot lancer because he's familiar with them. It eventually ends up in the hands of the Jupiter Empire, and Tobia steals its core fighter to escape. Jupiter rebuilds its missing core fighter components and it's upgraded to the Kai, no longer possessing a core fighter. The X2 is destroyed in the battle above Earth.

The X3 was developed late and given to Berah Ronah's cousin for when she returned to near-Earth space, but her cousin had other plans and kept it hidden away. It was stolen by Tobia so he could go to the final battle, where it was destroyed when Tobia sent it on an autopilot kamikaze attack to destroy a giant mobile armor filled with dirty nukes attempting to glass the planet's surface.

There's also the chrome X0, which was supposed to be delivered along with the X1 and X2, but the carrier ship was lost in space. Tobia much later on found it and retrofitted it with stealth technology, and Seabook pilots this for a while too. There's no kit of the X0 though.

Also later on data from the X2 is used by Jupiter to develop a knockoff Gundam, known as the Amakusa. One Amakusa had a virtual copy of Amuro's RX-78-2 battle data installed in it. The Amakusas were later developed into a true bootleg Gundam, the Phantom Gundam, which has an unfinished prototype of the V2's Wings of Light/Minovsky Drive installed on it.

Maaaaaaaaaybe.

I'm the kind of autist who won't buy more than one of a unique suit of the same grade if I already have one that I'm satisfied with or could improve myself. Grunt suits that aren't character specific customs are different though because there's supposed to be armies of those so who cares.
Like I didn't buy the Tekkadan set for the Landman Rodi and all those weapons specifically because I didn't want another Lupus Rex, Flauros, and Full Sticker, uh, City.

But since it'd mostly be generic non-character-specific grunt suits (which I've got no issues about buying multiples of), I'd heavily consider it.
