***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

THICK MS GROUPBUILD ==

Build a kit of your choice that's heavily armored, and thick in the thighs/arms/torso/general area. Examples include:
>Dom + Dom Variants
>The O
>Virtue/Seravee Gundams
>Gusion/Man Rodis
>Full Armor gundams (If they're heavily armored, and not guns strapped everywhere like the FA Unicorn)

Non-Bandai kits are allowed, so feel free to whip out a Frame Arms kit or something and work with that as long as you make it thicc as fuck.

Start Date: 6/15
End Date: 8/31

Yeah, they're pretty good. Some glue needed for the Barbatos Lupus' skirts and some other parts, but otherwise they're nice MG-Lite kits like the RE/100. They're not as solid as MGs and don't have the same array of gimmicks, but well worth a cop anyway.

Testors enamel is in general, a low quality paint compared to what you can get elsewhere. I switched from Testors to Vallejo (acryllic, but I'm not sure on a good enamel replacement) and the difference in color quality and paint quality is night and day. Not to mention, enamel thinner is notoriously bad for plastic.

Both the RG Amatsu Mina and RG Unicorn look great, they're both excellent RGs. You really can't go wrong if you like how either of them look. If the RG Unicorn isn't an option right now, I wouldn't even bother getting the HGUC Unicorn.

Make sure the hip is pushed all the way in, and don't try twisting the hip forwards or backwards with the joint in the waist angled down. It might be better to cement the parts so the swing down mechanism doesn't swing down

So yeah, a lot of us were kind of stunned over the results and went over to ask how the judges do their scores.

Essentially what happened is the concept portion of the 3 criteria and the guest judge from SUNRISE (Not Bandai) was Hideyuki Tomioka, who is not a modeler and was on a tight schedule. From what I understand, he basically showed up, looked at each kit for about 5 seconds, and gave a bunch of points to the ones he thought were coolest right off the bat rather than any that were particularly well done, and his scores heavily swayed the results.

Astaroth guy got robbed. The mg god gundam was nice too. The guy actually used a freedom frame for most of it and modded the god gundam armor around it.

That looks really badly done, anon. The paint is splotchy and messy, not to mention its bleeding everywhere. Next time, to improve, use masking tape to keep the paint in the area you want it to be in. Also, make sure you follow proper painting procedure such as thinning the paint, painting in multiple thin coats, waiting for each coat to dry before you go onto the next.
>>
>>15772271
>he's the kind of content you could expect a 4chan user to know about
Not on any of the boards I go on. The ones that I frequent don't really care/are averse to eceleb shenanigans. Unless it's mourning Grumpy Jii-san /a/ will tell you to fuck right off, especially if you bring up Digibro or other normalfag "anime reviewer." /tg/''s amalgamation of different subgroups (albeit often with a lots of overlap between fans) means that while one youtube channel can grow popular with a certain group (Critical Role threads), they don't have a large influence on the board's general culture. Same for /toy/; different groups have different famous youtubers (Nerf reviewers cover entirely different subject material than Beyblade reviewers, for example), but no single one is big enough that you can expect everyone on /toy/ to know them. And since /m/ stuff is rather niche, most of the time I see anyone talking about youtubers here it's usually /gpg/ talking about Gunpla reviewers, or someone trying to get the board riled up over a video that's "Lucky Star Getter"-levels of uninformed.

Also a good reminder how far ten burgers can get you between buying 3 Space Marines or a Man Rodi

The scale difference is pretty neat. I've seen some people that have tried making custom tabletop rules around using
gunpla as your pieces/characters.

Seeing how much taller a Gundam kit would be compared to a Warhammer figure, I can see how they can be inspired to do that.

I picked up some sprat paints along with the model but I don't have a good idea on how to do this. I would like to get the gold and the black to be more vibrant and pop more. How should I paint the runners? Do I need to hang it up to dry, and how long does it take?
>>
>>15773463
>>15773473

You need a can of primer and to read the guide in the OP. Your paints are fine but you need primer. Don't paint on the runners.
>>
>>15773473
>Painting on the runners
dude no
>>
>>15773481

How should I paint it then, if not on the runners?
>>
>>15773473
Don't paint the runners. Cut everything off first, otherwise you just wind up painting it again because you have to cut away the plastic at the gate marks.

Cut out the pieces
Organize them by what color you want to paint them
Put them on alligator clips
Prime them with your primer of choice (Tamiya works great)
Let them dry for a day or so
Paint them
Let them dry/cure
Either topcoat now or snap then topcoat
>>
>>15771600
they are fine for small details and for black gloss backings in a airbrush when thinned but otherwise I try not to use them
>>
>>15773473
Painting on runners is something you do for models tanks for the roadwheels and shit, don't use that technique for gunpla. you wanna assemble paint different assembled portions.

Cluster fuck models win this shit all the time because they take more skill the build. The problem is they take less skill to paint then a nicely done kit. Want to know who's at fault for that? No bullshit, serious answer. You faggots are. /m/ is pretty much the biggest mecha community that speaks English on the internet. It's been where Gunpla took off for most people and where most people get their news.

What did you do with this power? You did fucking nothing. Every newfag who came along with a OOB build with panel lining got smoke blown up their ass. Every faggot who applied decals or RG stickers was enough to get some (you)s. Any one who actually tried doing something original that was a WIP you ignored, any one who could paint got ignored for people who could barely paint. You always replied with "Heuh Heuh Heuh, bet u couldn't do better, post ur work and let us judge it" when someone shit on a scrub.

You set the bar so low for feedback while not encouraging people who had actual skill. So now you get the national events you deserve. All the people with actual talent left these sort of communities because you did nothing to keep them here. You encouraged "Thin your paints, remove duh nubs, use a pen to panel line then top coat it" as your holy mantra.

So your holy mantra won an international modeling contest representing America. People who could have destroyed that went off to build military kits, went back into miniature competition painting and the Western Gunpla competitive scene was stillborn because of it.

Don't be upset that this model kit won, be upset that you and your peers set the stage for it.

Anon, just because you are an insecure basement dweller with a neckbeard doesn't mean the rest of us are. If you really think /m/ lowered the bar for the "whole of western gunpla" and that would actually influence good builders than you are stupid. Anyone who is actually good at this hobby doesn't care about /m/ or the oppinion of people on this board. It has almost 0 influence on the "scene", while I'm sure a very small minority of gunpla builders in the west even know we exist.

It's true though that /m/ doesn't care about good builds or well done paint jobs and instead prefers snapped kits with some panel lining and top coats. That's because, despite what people here say, most of them can't build/paint for shit. They are just here to act tough and meme just like the rest of 4chan.

Why do people like Gunpla It's not as if though I hate Gunpla, there's just legitimately nothing interesting that it can offer me.

I personally like 1/144s because
A) Small so you can display loads of them
B) Cheaper, more gunpla for less money = more gooder
C) Detail work is a bit harder, so it really forces you to push yourself and work hard to draw as much out of them as possible
Join the 1/144 club, you'll have fun

More mobile fighters are always a good thing, especially to go with your Nobell. If you enjoyed the RX-78, you could try some other RGs. The Zephyranthes was pretty cool, and the Zaku II gets nothing but praise.
For 1/100s, an Origin Gundam is always a sure-fire hit.

Mixing scales weirds me out, and HGs feel too small for me, but the selection of 1/100s is pretty limited by comparison. I might get an HG and see how that feels... The Star Wars kits are a perfect size since theyre between HGs and MGs. I'm just getting tired of MGs getting shafted a cool suits
>>
>>15775127
If having the two scales next to each other is weird, why not have one shelf for each scale?
>>
>>15775101
>Too damn small
They are still to scale, so whats the matter with a few inches in size difference?
>More gunpla = more boxes to store and more storage space needed
You can cut and fold boxes down to make them take up less space.
>Build process is too easy
The building process for all models that don't require glue and paint is "too easy".

There are more kits under 1/144, people who like a certain kit can probably find it in that line for a cheaper price.
>>
>>15775133
naww it's the fact of having them together at all. It's like how I have the MG figurise Barnaby Brooks Jr that fits in no where with the rest of my models and I wish I found the 6 inch version first. Bleh damn bandai for not giving me everything that I want

1/100 above, excluding the SD line
>why is 1/144 not included in it?
Because they're too small and simple, personally. Like I said the only reason I'd pick up a 1/144 is because of the Build Fighters line, maybe the RGs or Neo Zeong/Dendrobium too.

If you don't like my opinion, feel free to disagree.
>>
>>15775172
I just wish that the scale was a tad larger, but I understand that would basically trivialize MGs other than for complexity
>>
>>15775189
Nah, you're good. People build gunpla for different reasons. When I first learned about it, all I wanted were some cool action figures. HG hit that niche right on the head; not too complex and easy to customize. Some people just want to go further beyond, and that's fine.
>>

My rule is go for 1/100 for as much as I can they tend to be better detailed and have more parts so painting is less of a pain with masking but still lets you do tons of work if you want to detail it up.
I tend to only get 1/144 if it does not come in a 1/100 or if the 1/144 is much better in terms of engineering and looks I.E the RG line also the custom work is a double edged sword you get easy kit bashing but it's much smaller to get a ton of detail w/o a lot of work

niqqa there's like 3-4 people between /toy/ and /m/ that actually make good gunpla
people post groupbuild WIP's a lot of the time and honestly most of them are mediocre
most of the people who actually are good at building gunpla don't come here and you're delusional if you think these two generals actually represent a majority of gunpla makers.
>All the people with actual talent left these sort of communities because you did nothing to keep them here.

That is because there are a lot of different directions/depths people take with their kits.

There's snapshitters, panel-line and topcoaters, painters/detailers, kitbashers, people who make dioramas, etc.

People do whatever floats their boat based on their budget and personal goals.

Different people have different standards, that's all it really is. Some people prefer anime accuracy/cartoon stylization for their models, some people prefer super realism with tons of rivets and greebles, some people prefer to just go in and make something crazy just because they can. Just because they prefer one over the other doesn't mean that the other style is invalidated.

As long as you don't end up making Nub Destinys or Red Cliffs and can accept you messed up somewhere and want to learn from your mistakes, you're on the right track. No one in this hobby starts out as a Meijin.

I just like doing this stuff.
You're getting there btw

Yeah actually that looks fantastic. The biggest question is how you'd actually go about painting it. Best idea I have is to print the patterns on some transparent waterslide paper. Might take some effort to calculate the size for the cannons though, just to eliminate any unsightly overlapping

If you wanted to paint a checker pattern, you'd use a stencil. Although I am curious about how you'd make a good stencil for Gunpla that doesn't bleed while still keeping cost below that of a waterslide decal.

I tried to utilize some of your design in this one. What do you think?

I think you've reached the sweet spot with the gold, but I'm feeling there's too much of the main red.

Sexy.
Looking forward to seeing this color scheme in practice.

You could just mask it easily

How long do I need to wait until I can mask over vallejo model air paints with tamiya masking tape?
>>
>>15776517
personally, i think there is too much magenta in the legs, maybe keep the lower legs red like in >>15776483
but looks great anyway

>I wouldn't even bother getting the HGUC Unicorn.
Keep in mind he said the hg FULL ARMOR unicorn. Not the HG unicorn Gundam. Just yesterday I went to the Gundam base side 6 in Korea, which showed, in a panel, all of the latest suits for unicorn gundam. The hguc full armor gundam came out more recently than the hg unicorn and actually looked just as good as rg unicorn in pure plastic quality. If someone likes all the extra dakka of the full armor and doesn't care about the transformation gimmik of the rg, I can see why they'd prefer the hguc full armor unicorn.
