For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

= THICK MS GROUPBUILD ==

Build a kit of your choice that's heavily armored, and thick in the thighs/arms/torso/general area. Examples include:
>Dom + Dom Variants
>The O
>Virtue/Seravee Gundams
>Gusion/Man Rodis
>Full Armor gundams (If they're heavily armored, and not guns strapped everywhere like the FA Unicorn)

Non-Bandai kits are allowed, so feel free to whip out a Frame Arms kit or something and work with that as long as you make it thicc as fuck.

Start Date: 6/15
End Date: 8/31

If I get an MG and it has dry transfers, I use as many as I can without overcrowding the kit. I just really love applying dry transfers, plus they look better than stickers or waterslides if you aren't going to do much with the kit.

I use some of them depending on whether or not I think it looks alright. RG sticker sheets are completely absurd though and the kits tend to look fine without them.

It's not about how much you stack or scribe shit, it's about how skillful you are at stacking and scribing.

And painting, and posing, and cleaning it up.

As much as they are not to my preference, I won't deny that the clusterfuck of parts that have won GBWCs before weren't made with the utmost care and detail. I won't deny that every single bit of the kit, even stuff you don't see, is painted, weathered, and built to perfection.

Of course, creativity still goes into scoring as well, that's why pic related won 2015.

I used to use the stickers but after making all of the SEED 5 and then getting their water decals in the premium package Providence I don't want to top coat before water slides, which is why I'm glad Bandai seems to release waterslides again, although it's almost only 1/144 that's not part of some p-bandai bullshit.

I'm thorn, I have a HG prototype Gouf that comes with a few stickers. I normally paint my kits and don't use stickers, just waterslides/dry transfers, but these stickers seem to really fit with the kit. Since I normally don't use these stickers I have no idea how good they will look on a painted kit with a topcoat.

What should I do anons? Use the stickers or not? Will they look absolutely horrible or are they ok? I don't really want to ruin a painted kit with something that will look bad.
>>
>>15761214
some of the pictures i've seen, they look horrible the way they peel of because they don't stick perfectly or go into the panel lines like properly set water slides

I don't think water slides for any Origin kit exists.

Order decals from samueldecal or use generics. If there are no waterslides for that kit specifically, you can still use the lines by cutting down the stickers to use them as masking, like in pic. Stickers are always going to look like stickers because of the thickness, unfortunately.

I guess you haven't seen a lot of kits with modern decals. They haven't come a long way but there is progress. If you take your time applying and get them down well with a qtip you will be shocked at how nice it looks.

There's no doubt that waterslides and dry transfer look better, but when a kit comes with decals like those, it'll always look some better with it, even if you use them sparingly as details.

It's better to try and know for the future than to go off someone's opinions then find out its wrong later.

I got a lot of bad advice from this thread from people who didn't build a lot or hadn't tried shit. They read the guide or other people's conversations then theorycraft and advise others.

Try one in an inconspicuous spot, they come off easy.

How the fuck do you work with small parts? Is there some secret I'm not aware of?
>>
>>15761271
Yeah, here's my secret. Was cutting beets for the wife last night at 4am before bed.

Looked at my beet juice soaked hands before heading to bed, and realized that they were stained from the juice. And all the hundreds of tiny cuts on my fingertips were panel lined with beet juice, stood out big time.

So the moral of this story is, everyone who doesn't have specialized tools for the job either sends pieces into orbit or cuts their fingers up.
>>
>>15761271

I just use my fingers or hold the piece against a cutting mat, not really too tough.
>>
>>15761227
>>15761229
Yeah I'm not even going to bother with waterslides for this kit, it's not worth the money for me.

I might actually try the masking trick, since I normally do a lot of masking anyway, so cutting up the stickers is not that much work. Thanks for the tip!

>>15761232
Yeah true, the only kit I ever used a sticker on was the HG Kämpfer, but looking at it now that wasn't so bad. I think I'll just try the out as you said and then I'll judge if I want them on or not.

I can always go for the masking option the other anon mentioned.

I think he's talking about the /m/ discord not the /gpg/ discord run by snapfag. Shit's got real in the gunpla part of the /m/ discord, its mostly underage, a few redditors, people crossposting all the time from snapshit's discord with their circlejerk squad of -kun suffixes, and more.

One server is run by a tripfag that's disliked by the majority of the thread and is primarily focused around gunpla. It only has like 1/10th the userbase of the other server however and gets spammed in threads because no one wants it in the OP.

The other server is just a general /m/ one that also has text channels for other /m/-related stuff like tokusatsu and /m/ vidya, but apparently has some drama going on that's leaked into these right now (I wouldn't know exactly what happened since I disabled desktop notifications since they take up like 2/3rds of the right side of my laptop's screen with them on and don't really pay attention to what happens in the gunpla channel asides from looking at kits people post).

just primed my groupbuild entry and have a very amateurish question
i know there are scratches and imperfection on it after i primed it. my question is since i know i will weather it, my question is is it worth it to sand things down and re prime the parts or keep the imperfections to show its been used in battle
>>
>>15761881
Sounds like an artistic choice. If you want to create your own story for the battle, I'd say do a good paintjob by sanding and priming. If you just want greebling for pigments to get caught on during weathering, imperfections from laziness work fine.

>>15761875

Artistic choice, me personally I would only sand to re-weather if i really really cared what "kind" of damage it was. Does the gundam have a story? Or is it just a battle damaged gundam?

as someone in the /m/ discord I think your mistaken, the plamo chat is only one channel with what was about 6 regulars down to 3 now tops. probably 5% of the total population actually do models and 13% actually post, upwards of 95% of all posts are in offtopic, begging the question of what the discord is for, and the videogames isnt mech videogames but just videogames in general, swept by flavor of the week shit.

There were a few who weren't religious about the hobby but serious about it, half left, there were a few who like the hobby and do it regularly, but don't post as often, they are not affected.

a friend of mine pushed me to join and then a day later he was banned for a few weeks without any clear reason, he's been back a handful of days and the mods are worse than ever about being useless or just childish. If you could read the chats right now you would never defend it.

My first ever kit was my first non-gundam kit, the kotobukiya metal gear rex. I have since lost a minor part while moving but besides that it looks alright as an OOB kit. Taking it apart seems somehow terrifying because it's not that stable, so if I ever paint it I'll probably just go the tank route of doing the priming and basecoat with airbrush and most of the detailing by hand.
>>

How was it compared to bandai kits?

I'm fairly experienced with bandai kits now, pretty good at straight builds.

>>
>>15762074
Even as my first kit there weren't really any problems. Some of the tiny details that aren't articulated anyway tend to come off so they might be worth gluing on, but I haven't done so and somehow managed to not lose those.
It's a solid kit with lots of interesting engineering if you're used to just gunpla, thanks to how different the design is. I've heard people say that koto's plastic is somehow worse than banda's but I haven't had any issues with it. The worst point is that the railgun's ends tend to join together, but I nipped off a bit of a clear runner and stuck it in at the end and I'd say it's hardly visible unless you know it's there.

Read the guides, there's two in the OP that are invaluable resources.

that's right, a mere topcoat was good enough for me, although some little details have paint all over the model, black and gray for the vents, silver for all the cannons of the dragoons, those even need red in some section, etc

the worse was the decal hell, I combined the decals of the kit itself and the ones of the effect parts

as for the latter, oh boy, this is going to look great when I attach them, problem is it will take a lot of space which I no longer have to properly display it

Just as a warning, be sure of your decision if you only want one. Before this reprint was announced, the Altron was priced extremely high, above $120 last time I checked.

It's the thinner that fucks with the plastic, but laquers in general are not very good for handpainting anyway. White is usually a tougher color to nail anyway, even with airbrushing primer whites. I suggest sticking with Vallejo

First off, Kit bashing is like playing with lego. Must of the time is spent looking for the right piece. It's also expensive, as you are using multiple kits for one finished robot. But I find it fun. Don't be afraid to redo anything you slap together if it doesn't work out. I must have gone through 5 backpacks before I ended up with what you see.
The Samurai-rice-picking-cowboy is made from:
-Powered GM (Most of the body)
-Gundam The End (guns, hands and hips)
The head is from some GM that I forgot, with a neck extension to allow more movement. The "hat" is from an old Revell kit. The Jet Engines on the backpack are from an Orguss kit.
The theme I was after was a kind of light ground based scout. Brown and tan always make a good colour scheme, and a disk radome makes a great hat.
Pic is another build I posted earlier of a kit bashed Gaza. All the various colours help to see what goes into a kitbash.

I understand what you're going for here but it'd just end up looking bad on a kit like a Loto, Ball or Kapool honestly.
You'd want something like an Astray or Strike Gundam that is no stranger to oversized weaponry.
Still, you'd have to hold the mace up on a stand of it's own since I doubt even an Action Base could survive the immense heft of a 1/48 Mace.

With the RE/100 line any kit could become a RE.

It wouldn't be p-bandai it would be a brand new kit.

Too dark with too many colors for that kind of idea in my opinion. A lot of the color separation looked hella weird to me but I have a preference towards not having it for the sake of having it.

I messed around with it and made it to my liking.

Probably BECAUSE of the increase in P-Bandai releases. P-Bandai releases happen because Bandai expects to make a bigger profit by selling these kits directly to consumers than if they were to constantly keep the kits in production. GM Command probably would've sold well as a general release though, but hey, I'm not one of Bandai's financial analysts so what's my opinion matter.

I'm trying my hand at hand painting. I think I'm doing okay. I've made the mistake of using tamiya acrylics for the job. It doesn't seem like I'm going too thick, but I notice some parts are darker with the faintest hint of brush strokes.

It just makes business sense. Although of course with a direct-to-customer model the customer also usually gets some of the savings.

ARGH, after all these years they finally going to make the obscure GMs and MSV guys as p-bandai.

Bandai is still lame though. They are only releasing moulds out of convenience.

We now have 1/100 MP Hyakushiki, Efreet Schneid, and now GM Command, but no other appropriate guys that could complement them universe wise.

No other Zeon remnant MS, no other War in the Pocket ones.

This is the ultimate problem with Gunpla as remoulds are prioritised rather than a complete set of characters.

Robot Damashii ANIME line is doing a good job as it is releasing all the TV First Gundam characters and maybe 60% of the MSV ones.

Anyway, I will wait for reviews of this GM Command. It was always regarded as one of the strongest GMs back in the 90s until they retconned that GM Kais also existed in OYW.

Let's revisit the glory the GM Command in action.

Kits that can only be ordered in specific countries directly from Bandai's webstore. If you live in a different region than one of the specific countries (say, North America or Europe) you have to go through a middleman and pay a markup.
But here's the real kicker- they're limited production, so you have to pre-order them or buy them shortly after release. You said you're new- you'll probably discover a mobile suit you love and want a kit of, find out its P-bandai and then find out it's been out of production for a while and now costs even more than it did during the P-bandai Order window because of Scalpers.
I really want a RAG-79-G1 Waterproof Gundam which was 2160 yen from Bandai (roughly $20 US)
Now it's $50 US on Ebay.
>>
>>15765513
The other major mecha model company is Bandai, and they make kits if varying quality from a handful of lines. Their best are Zoids and Armored Core easily. Bandai makes MG Ingrams though.
>>
>>15765617
Wow I meant "other than Bandai is Kotobukiya," really fucked that one up
>>
>>15765573
To add on to what >>15765577 is saying P-Bandai also only sells their kits at full MSRP and RARELY does free shipping and only as a promotional thing. So even if you are in, for example, Japan, where can preorder from them directly, you'll still pay more than a regular release kit would cost you through various discounted sellers (like Amazon.jp, which sells most kits at 20%-60% off) and who offer free shipping.

Anyone from UK ordered from BanzaiHobby? How much is the customs charge usually?
>>
>>15765726

Not from the UK but from another european country where they do a good job at taxing you. So far I haven't gotten taxed at all for any of my purchases from that site.

I did add "please undervalue for customs" in the message field though.

Ah thanks, I'll remember that for next time

Just get either the ver. Ka or the 2.0, unless you're damn good at customization.

I like the III the best, but after finishing the original with all of the Dragon Momoko extra's last week I learned to love that one just as much. You can't really go wrong with the Tallgeese.
