Kouta is the worst instance of a tatakae protagonist of all time and is everything wrong with one. Emu is a proactive motherfucker who schemed, planned, and out-thought most of the cast and doesn't get his power-ups handed to him, they're pretty much all developed by others and in two separate cases have fucked him over just as much as they've helped him. Shinji is a sentient gunk-in-the-works who doesn't even win the tatakae plot but instead manages to appeal to the emotion and logic of the villain and secondary so at the very least Ren's not an asshole and Kanzaki in a moment of actual morality decides to just reset everything and quit fucking everything up at the price of everyone's memories of each other. I guess? The only power-up I'd Emu earned was Muteki, simply because that required him to work with Kiriya to get back. Otherwise, MBX was literally just given to him by Parrad and Maxinum was Emu using his tensai gamer powers, so I wouldn't say Ex-Aid is perfect in that regard either.

Mighty Brothers XX was meant to be the original's "beta" Gashat for Parad's Rider form, but he wanted to play with Emu and knew his Bugster Virus was already IN Emu so he'd get a say in how it'd work anyway, and Emu activating it basically granted him fresh control over Emu as well as an opportunity to fight alongside him. This would then screw Emu over much later on when Parad uses it to get a new Gamer Driver and set up a gambit against Emu.
Maximum Mighty X was earned by actually believing in and working with Kiriya on multiple occasions, giving Kiriya the motivation to pursue his research on reprogramming which was the key purpose of the MMX Gashat. Said Gashat also wasn't intended for Emu, it was intended for Taiga, who commissioned it from Burgerboy. It then screwed him over because, alongside MBXX giving Parad a Gamer Driver, Emu's reprogramming put human DNA in Parad which allowed him to obtain Perfect Knockout.

Really Takeru was just more of the same we got from Kouta back in Gaim: whines a lot, retreads the same characterization over and over, got his shit just handed to him.
The problem with Haruto is that there *was* potential to be there, but the series didn't ever let him be people. Having a flat character is bad but ruining the potential for a good one is ever worse.

You can talk about movies all you want but Haruto has had longer to appear, and even then I still don't see this amazing characterization.

Emu is good because he's flawed but also proactive

Takeru the Key Tenji throughout the show never thought about anything but never made a mistake either and never had any internal conflict. He was completely unproblematic and as a result boring as shit like the rest of the story.

I did not like Kouta either for this kind of reason. Eiji was selfless but he had to negotiate living with the enemy and put up some boundaries, and his selflessness was also a flaw. Gentarou was just awesome and outrageous. Godai and Shinji's kindness were challenged thoughout their series. Takeru is just uniquely a shitty MC even among "kind" "simple" MC's.

I genuinely liked Haruto's character.
And no, I don't mean just "Movie Haruto" either.
Wizard was literally wasted potential, but you were still given glimpses of it which is how said potential was recognized to begin with.
Wizard had quite a few notable moments regarding Haruto's characterization that add up even if the execution overall was shoddy.
The most prominent one being that his insecurity about his role as Wizard builds up in a way that specifically seems to highlight his qualifications as a hero by the final arc.

It eventually becomes clear that he doesn't necessarily do what he does out of the altruistic goodness of his heart; he does it because he feels he's the only one who is really capable of it to begin with, regardless of how much of burden it may be or his own feelings on the matter.
We saw that he had goddamn graphic nightmares of people getting brutally killed by Phoenix if he failed to stop him. That scene alone showed that the thought of not being able to be THE Wizard haunts his mind.
Later down the road, he's willing to tell lies to a gate just to easily deal with the immediate issue of them turning into a phantom.
The showmanship Haruto displays when he fights seems much more telling once you realize even the Phantoms he fights hold his existence to a fairly high standard of regard. "Wizard" is suppose to be larger than life, even if Haruto himself actually isn't, and his overly stylish fighting flairs seems like it's suppose to enforce the idea (much like how Kabuto fought in a way that accentuated his superiority)

These are just some examples that always stuck out in particular to me.
They don't focus on these types of facets that much throughout the show, but still hint enough that there is something there.

I agree. They also don't focus enough on Haruto's paradoxical nature where the moment that brings him the most despair is what gives him the most hope. And the person that gave him the most hope, brought him the most despair like when Koyomi died and his sadness literally revived his dragon and supercharged him. It could've highlighted how close the two mindsets are intermingled better when there's no hope the world is black but when there's only despair, the only place to go is up.

If it was given to a better writer, it could've been a fan favourite series.

General opinion was that the first few episodes were rushed and the cast bad, and some people dropped the show right there. Some others continued on, and the show was seen more positively after a while, especially when Specter finally teamed up with Ghost. People even got hyped when there was the twist of the reveal of those human chambers in the Ganma world and Takeru genuinely angry with them and unwilling to forgive them (too bad that basically vanished after two episodes).

That came crashing down later though - there were a couple of hits in this period, like Grateful's debut which was considered pretty disappointing, with it one shoting the enemy without a proper battle, but what really solidified the negative opinion about the show was pretty much everything after Alain's arc. Those episodes were very well received, but what followed them was Takeru becoming completely bland and perfect, Specter and Necrom just jobbing to any new suits, and the plot becoming much slower, while the new enemies of the week (Ganmizer) had no real personality, making them very repetitive. Alongside this there was Igor being defeated and returning over and over again. Basically, it was these last 20 episodes that solidified the show as trash in the general consensus, with the discussions about it as negative as the ones you see now.
