***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

= THICK MS GROUPBUILD ==

Build a kit of your choice that's heavily armored, and thick in the thighs/arms/torso/general area. Examples include:
>Dom + Dom Variants
>The O
>Virtue/Seravee Gundams
>Gusion/Man Rodis
>Full Armor gundams (If they're heavily armored, and not guns strapped everywhere like the FA Unicorn)

Non-Bandai kits are allowed, so feel free to whip out a Frame Arms kit or something and work with that as long as you make it thicc as fuck.

Start Date: 6/15
End Date: 8/31

Right now, nothing. I've got a Tristan coming that I'm excited for but I'm all bought up, meaning I don't need to buy anything because I bought everything I wanted that's been released up to this point. I'm looking forward to future HGUC releases and possible G reco releases if a movie does come out.

>>15706563

How did you do the inner frame, lots of masking? I'm about to paint my first 1/100 IBO kit but I'm not very confident in masking currently so I would love some advice if possible.
>>
>>15706572
depends on which part you are talking about. most are separate parts that i just painted separately but iirc the only ones that needed masking were the leg pipings(?)

it can result in some problems but i typically paint before assembly
>>
>>15706586

I believed some masking was needed on the arms as well but it seems like the part separation is better than I recalled.

But for the pipes on the legs, I assume you did the proper color on them and then masked the pipes only and did the normal frame color afterwards? It feels like the logical approach.
>>
>>15706603
oh right, the golden part on the forearm, along with the pipe at the elbow (painted it gold and silver)

surprisingly, i did the opposite. painted it the frame's color then left the pipes unmasked. I usually do masking based on whichever is easiest to do. It hasn't happened yet but i do get a little worried about having color differences due to this way of painting & masking
>>
>>15706548
>shitty 00 suits
You shut your whore mouth. Exia, 00, and QAN[T] are perfect.
>>
>>15706548
RG 00 raiser is one of the best kits ever, period. the only flaw it has is that it's easy to assemble the GN drives wrong, and that's not even something wrong with the kit, the manual just doesn't emphasize what exactly you're supposed to do.
>>
>>15706635
Because we really needed 3 releases of the same fucking suit in the RG line..

How would I go about topcoating a RG?
Normally I'd separate the limbs but with the way the inner frames are on the RGs I don't feel like that's a very good idea,
Should I just take the shoulders off, throw him on a stand in a T-pose kinda way and spray him, then do the shoulders?

You can take the arms and legs off the standard RG frames no problem. Just swivel the arms forward to expose the joint that you can separate, it won't cause any problems.

The Dreissen is pretty nice, the Halberd(?) it has could be more stable, I would have preferred if it had some kind of peg for it but you could see how it would limit poseability. Arm gimmick is a very simple peg system that is (ridiculously) tight. It stores the weapons nicely on the back, though.

As for the Doven Wolf the legs tend to sag when you pose it on an action base. Otherwise it's fantastic overall, just be careful with the antennas on the head. It's a remarkably solid kit standing on the ground, though.

I finally found an appropriate arm set for my current Franken-Build. The arms are made from 2 SD Neue Ziel droptanks, a Barzams thighs, some bit from a "The End" gundam (Knee, I think) and some hands from the Build Fighters Build Knuckles. Nice and lanky.
>>
>>15706681
Oh god, I have no idea about the RG zeta. I know it has horribly flimsy non-standard hips, I don't know if you can even take the legs off that one. I imagine the arms work like normal, though.

A different look for the same thing. The Byalant already has a weird silhouette, and I wanted something more "slenderman" or scrawny. I buy model kits and gunpla on sale with no intention of building them properly, and mine them for parts.

Can spray anything and has the option to slot in different needle/nozzle types to make it more for fine detail or large coverage. The company who makes it will assist with repairs if it gets damaged, only cost to you is initial shipping. It's pretty cheap too on Amazon.

Oh wow there's another New Yorker here?
I mostly get my kits from Chinatown.
Dashop has a huge selection but their prices can be too much sometimes. There's a smaller store in the first floor of Elizabeth center across the street with better prices. The guy lowers the prices even further if nobody buys the kits. That's where I usually get my kits from. I'm actually planning on going there this Sunday, I just hope the kits I've been wanting to buy aren't already sold by then.
Another shop opened up on the lower floor of Elizabeth Center that sells gunpla but I haven't really checked that place out yet.

There's also Midtown comics in Fulton street and Times Square. Times Square store has a bigger selection, and their prices are alright. Last that I can think of is Image Anime, they have a good selection of kits and even P bandai stuff, along with a wide selection of paints and other things. The guys working there (that aren't the old Asian owners) are really nice and helpful if you've got any gunpla related questions.

I'm glad they did. It gave them time to grow and learn through the RG line's every release.

Now, since they learn reusing frames for certain designs is bad with the Sinanju and with the hope of the Unicorn being this surprise miracle, we could actually have a good RG of the Nu, Hi-Nu, Sazabi, ZZ, and all the big boys.

Also, fuck you, the 00 RGs are some of the best in the line.

My local hobby store has a pretty rad selection of gunpla that rotates frequently. The box I got mine out of was like 11 bucks - A Gundam vs Zaku thing from the 08th MS team.

But uh, unless you really want 2 dirt cheap gunpla to use for a practice piece, the model is straight trash. Loose joints, basically nonexistent articulation, godawful color separation, flash on the mold, parts that don't stay on without glue, etc, etc. You really get what you pay for.

I use either Gaianotes or Modo which generally have the same result. For the topcoat i use a spraycan instead of airbrush, mr super clear flat.

>>15709589
On the upper floor (The floor you enter in) there's a store in the back right corner of the store. It used to be downstairs but moved up after they renovated the place. There's also another new gunpla shop downstairs, turn left and go down the hall after taking the escalator and it'll be right there.

I can't say anything about the new one but the first one is my preferred place to buy gunpla due to the fair prices, even lower 'sale' prices, and the fact that he sells the summer campaign parts for only $3 when they're given out, which is nice since I don't see them sold in many places for non-shitty prices and I don't like ordering online just for the hopes of possibly getting the one or two I wanted.
>>

I can't say for sure, I never really look at anything in his shop outside of gunpla. I think the place called 'Dashop' across the street from Elizabeth Center has a better chance of having it since they have a much larger stock of different kinds of kits, although their prices are more expensive.

Citadel (if you were dumb enough to buy GW paint) is of course "compatible" with Gunpla, it's just paint.
You might want to get a Zaku II or RX-78-2 to practice assembly and painting on first. Still get the Stark Jegan, but RX-78-2 and Zaku II kits are cheap as fuck so you might as well grab one as a disposable practice kit.

The plastic quality is pretty good for a third party kit. No flash on mine and nothing felt brittle. The only downsides where the fact that most of the grey joints are polycaps. The arms are the biggest offender because all of the non-shoulder ones are polycaps and i didnt have the right type of koto joints to replace them before i sealed up the seams. Its too pricy and i'd say only get it if your going to seamline weld and paint it, oob the white is that grey white color they use for rgs

Have you ever gotten just so goddamn frustrated and unhappy with a kit you say fuck it and buy the Robot Damashii instead? Pic related for me. It was one of the first kits I bought after getting into Gunpla, and it was so disappointing, coupled with all the ways I fucked up while building it that I just stopped midway through. I pulled it out tonight thinking I'd finally finish it, saw that shitty forhead sticker peeling off, and remembered how much I hated it.

Does lacquer thinner brittle or melt plastic? I bought some from a local hardware store for cleaning brushes and other purposes. I'm testing the brand by soaking a piece in it.
>>
>>15711028

That shit will basically melt. I think that's part of the point too, it's probably what lets the paint "bite" into the plastic.
>>
>>15711030
The piece I soaked got soft in the extremes but brittle in the middle. Maybe I didn't soak it enough.
>>
>>15711040

I guess getting "soft" is a more appropriate term, I did something similar and I was able to leave fingerprints in it etc. I just assumed it would melt if exposed more.

so I want to get a new big kit to celebrate my new job.

I was thinking between these kits :

haven't built a pg before and this one seems cool.

I loved the mg zaku 2 kits they are some of my favorite. but Idk if this one is worth the extra $60
> white glint kotobukia kit
it's big and it's cool but I can't really find in depth reviews for it.

Anyone have experiences with any of these kits? I don't just want to go with the most expensive one just because it's the most expensive. I want to know your personal opinions on these

I'm currently doing the pg unicorn, those legs are a hell to do but i'm really satisfied with the results, if you want you can go for the leds or the full armor expansion, but i think the FA is kinda hard to find at a reasonable price.
>>
>>15711421
I dunno about the Unicorn anon. Looks beaut and has a ton of presence but it's a shit to do anything with after a while. Mine can't hold up anything more than a beam saber after having it for about a year and a half and there are some bits to the transformation that do NOT feel good at all.

A new comic book/card game shop opened up in town, and it turns out they have some gunpla in there.
They had stuff like the GM thunderbolt for £30
They had old SEED HGs for £20
They were even selling one of the old 80's 1/144 MSVs for £15.
What a terrible time to be alive.

Yeah that kinda annoys me with the Unicorn, I see people singing its praise everywhere but I'm just sitting here trying and failing to get the shield to look natural because the arm just flops around. Hell the only time I've seen people acknowledge the floppiness is in an ama on leddit with the Dragon Momoko guy before they released their PG Unicorn.

I wish I could say something about other PG's, but my Mk.II is just sitting unmade waiting for shelfspace. I do know it apparently has the best frame of any PG though.

i have no issues with mine besides shield+beam gatlings on one arm droop a little but that was solved by tightening up the joint a little with super glue on the peg method.

worst part of the PG unicorn i have to say are the flipfloppy sidefoot panels due to them being on ball sockets for transformation, i wish they were static and rigid but that wouldn't work with how they are positioned in NTD mode.

oh and the hands, while they hold stuff fine, i painted them since if you look closely they're molded in two different colors, the blackish and the brownish. looks fucking stupid, they're just hands from the PG strike or astray don't remember which one, or if they're the same themselves. i wish they would redesign the PG hands to be like the new articulated MG hands. i know i've seen some complaints about them since they were released with the Nu ver ka but i've yet to run into any fucky issues with them and i find them superior in every way to static swappable hands, just don't hamhand them problem solved. DM's turd party copy of them are alright too, just a more rigid plastic, whereas Bandai's kinda feel like polycap type material.
