***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

== THICK MS GROUPBUILD ==

Build a kit of your choice that's heavily armored, and thick in the thighs/arms/torso/general area. Examples include:
>Dom + Dom Variants
>The O
>Virtue/Seravee Gundams
>Gusion/Man Rodis
>Full Armor gundams (If they're heavily armored, and not guns strapped everywhere like the FA Unicorn)

Non-Bandai kits are allowed, so feel free to whip out a Frame Arms kit or something and work with that as long as you make it thicc as fuck.

Start Date: 6/15
End Date: 8/31

Still need to do some cleanup on this, but I've started some work on fattening up a kimaris. Can't decide if I'm gonna keep the standard kimaris color scheme or change it up. Maybe the Vidar colors, but I'm not sold on that idea yet.

I admit it, I'm an idiot. I went against the common advice and used a gundam marker for the nails and such on my HG Barbatos Lupus Rex. I did it because it was close at hand and convenient, and I'm not happy with how it's turning out. Can anyone recommend a good method for stripping the paint so I can try again with a spray can? I've heard leaving it overnight in a tub of Windex can do the trick, can anyone confirm?
>>
>>15667621
Can't confirm the windex, but you can usually strip gundam marker off with some rubbing alcohol and a q-tip if it's a relatively new coat.

I use some lighter fluid and a q tip or cotton ball if a big job. Works easy but you need a little elbow grease.

I'll add it to the list of things to try. A little bit of googling has me thinking I'm going to try Super Clean first.
>>
>>15667651
Technically its not an astray. Its a mildly remodeled Testament gundam. Lowe just calls every gundam he makes an Astray.
>>
I can't get over my fear of painting, I'm always terrified I'm going to botch a Gunpla up horribly and watch it become an ugly piece of shit.
>>
>>15667758
Just take it slow and work in layers, that way even if you do heinously botch something it's just a little bit of work to try again.

I'd appreciate any feedback or criticism on my last groupbuild. I know I messed up the paint pretty bad through inexperience and lack of patience.

It's only my second finished kit and my first paint job, so I'm fairly pleased with it, regardless.

>Guide recommends cutting nubs off completely instead of sanding them down, then says the stress marks/residue are impossible to remove without paint (they wouldn't be there if you sanded the nub down)

Okay, who wrote this?
>>
>>15667857

Well some people worship the guide like its a religion. Honestly, you will find better and much more informative tutorials on youtube
>>
>>15667218
The v-fins are pretty unattractive.
>>
>>15667925
It just seems bonkers to me that such blatantly bad information is left in there. Just get a couple of sanding sticks, watch your angle and watch those nubs disappear with nothing left beyond some minor as fuck scratches you can only see under direct light.
>>
>>15667857
This is a call to arms for us to synthesize some better guiding principles.

Here is what I've come to do myself from what I've learned from the thread/community:
-Cut nub ~2mm away from piece at gate
-Use hobby knife to shave it down, preferably at an angle away from the piece from each side, leaving a small lump that is roughly triangular
-use file to sand down, single strokes, single direction but speed is variable based on your comfort and piece shape
when flush you have choices.
-If you want clean plastic look, progress up a few steps of sandpaper to 2k or higher depending on preferences, I use 800 then 1.5 after a file
-buff/polish with something, I use multi-sided nail buffing blocks. After a few quick strokes per side it looks like new plastic with nub not visible and no scuffs
if you want to sand entire thing
-progress up a little (1-2 steps) with sanding tools to lesson the dramatic scraping of the file to something that is easier to hide
-sand entire kit for matte, chalky look
-this method best if painting

How's this for a process?
>>
So I know I'm not supposed to, but I used Alclad II Klear Kote in my room through my airbrush to test it out on some painted parts, but I'm not sure if it made me dizzy or if I'm slightly drunk. Am I going to die?

The Astray's were a specific line of MS in the Seed setting, and the outframe isn't from that line. If you want to be specific it's technically developed from the Strike gundams, or more specifically the striker packs. Zaft was researching the EA;s strike packs and designed the Testament to use them. They made 2 units, and Lowe got his hands on the incomplete one and modified it a bit to complete it and stuck the "Astray" name onto it because that's what he does. It has nothing to do with the astray line of MS.

The 1/100 Outframe is a DM kit, not Bandai. And DM already made a 1/100 Testament, which is probably why they're now making the outframe.

Help guys, I've got a primed Val Varo that I've been sitting on for months. I try to bring myself to get back to painting it but it's kind of a pain in the ass since I don't have a dedicated painting area and have to keep setting up everything on the porch and putting it away each day. What do you guys do to help you get motivated when you're not feeling it?
>>
>>15668465
>What do you guys do to help you get motivated when you're not feeling it?

Just start working on it. Motivation be damned, "Not feeling it" is just an excuse to be lazy.
>>
>>15668472
>"Not feeling it" is just an excuse to be lazy
It isn't if it's a hobby. You're supposed to do it because you enjoy it, if you force it it just becomes work you don't get paid for
>>
>>15668472
This.
Once you start you can't stop and it consumes your life again
>>
>>15668465
Taking breaks helps for me when I don't have the motivation. I'm usually watching Gundam itself in those breaks which ropes me right back in though.
>>
Are there any guides for determining the best way to draw panel lines style-wise?
>>
>>15668498
Once you start working on it, you often end up getting motivated again. Plus making yourself do stuff even when your not motivated develops stronger work ethic and you find yourself not being motivated less often. This is also a skill that will help you in your everyday life as well, not just your hobbies.

Like I said, not doing something because your "Not feeling it" is just an excuse to be lazy. Obviously he enjoys the hobby and wants to work on finishing it or he wouldn't be coming online asking for help getting motivated.

I don't have anything against the guy. Apparently he just likes the toy look of the kits without any sort of mod. Fine by me. I'm not all too fancy with my kits either but I alwayd panel line for the anime look.

The outside parts of his legs should have panel lines on them but there's no line for the ink to settle in so it cleans off too easily.

Okay so I just finished a Scharfrichter build + paint.

Firstly I've been told I need to thin my paint, how exactly should I do this?

Secondly, I know I need to panel line. How should I handle panel lining on a painted kit? IE, how do I clean up the lines without fucking up the paint?

Other feedback appreciated.
>>
>>15669639
So you can just use water for acrylics? What's the difference versus actual acrylic thinner?
>>
>>15669589

For your first question, we sort of need to know what paint you are using. For handbrushing I would recommend using vallejo model or game color, and I would thin it with their brand thinner but water works as well.

Panel lining on painted kits? Enamel wash. I use the tamiya panel line accent. It needs to go on top of a gloss or satin surface though.
>>
>>15669589
Hi, I'm a snapfitter, but I just looked at the guide. It says which thinners to use per paint type. Also relevant to how thin, and what additives to use is what painting method you're using. It appears you're brush painting so I'd look up stuff about leveling, as that will help you on your way to not having brush strokes.

Also for panel lining, I'm looking in the guide here and well hello! It has a brief discussion about that as well.

There's also a dedicated area for help, but don't share it with everyone or else it'll frustrate the community if outside communities ever find it, here's a link:

fucking google
>>
>>15669648
I'm using Tamiya acrylics for now, but I'm looking at "upgrading".

Do I need to use a fluid to remove panel wash? Or can I just use a cotton swab while it's not dry?
>>
>>15669652
Yeah I'm a retard. Should've started there.
>>
>>15669656

Tamiya is great for airbrushing, not so much handbrushing.

And yes, grab some lighter fluid and wet the cotton swab with it. Instead of using a cotton swab, you can also use a brush damp with the lighter fluid if you have something you want to correct that you can't reach with the cotton bud.

>Firstly I've been told I need to thin my paint, how exactly should I do this?

Get some of these things, something to mix the paint in and start by adding thinner/paint in a 1:1 ratio. Dilute it further, if you feel it's too thick after testing it on a piece of runner.

You'll need the right stuff for the type of paint you're using, acrylics are fine with water (distilled/filtered) usually and enamels work with either brand-specific thinner or diluted laquer thinner from a hardware store.

>How should I handle panel lining on a painted kit?

You spray it with gloss coat, line those panels and then you can wipe the excess without risking damage to the paint underneath.

All of this was in the Guide, fucking read it.
>>
>>15669589
THIN YOUR PAI-
>Firstly I've been told I need to thin my paint

Oh, right then.

>how exactly should I do this?

By adding thinner to thin the paint out and building up the paint on the kit in thinner successive coats rather than one thick coat. What kind of thinner you use depends on your paint. Most companies sell their own thinner specific to the line of paint they sell which is a good place to start, but if it's something simple like water based acrylic then you can just use water.
>>
>>15669668

If he takes my advice and switches to vallejo, all he will need is a palette since the bottles have droppers which makes it easy to put in x drops of paint/thinner.
>>
>>15669678
Fucking take my money, dropper worth.
>>
>>15669589
all depends on the type of paint you used. handbrushing means multiple coats so you dont have that brush stroke effects. for lining, get tamiya pannel accent or make some yourself by mixing enamel paint and thinner. make sure to clear coat it before lining so it wont mess up the paint job.
i like the color scheme, ever thought of painting the innerframe? looks out of place since its just grey. if handpainting isnt your thing, even spray is fine.
>>
>>15669699
I think I may paint it, but I like the "graze-gray", so I may just coat it and call it good. Not sure at this point.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't think it's one of the few good new /m/ series from this decade. It does have it's flaws though (The animation in the first season, the fomulaic episodes in the third, the fact that Commie is the only group willing to sub it most of the time.) but it's still a fun watch. Ask in /sgg/ for more info if you're still wary

I'm honestly wary of generals these days, after the IBO generals being a complete and utter shitshow every single thread.

I'll just check it out and give it a fair shot.

I only watched it due to the main duo of voice actors and I was still disappointed. The main character is very likeable, at least.
I'd recommend watching the live concerts over the show.

>>15670319
It's fair to be wary. The general is a mess. People are trying to talk about the new ep, and the real discussion is lost due to all thread specific memes, people just talking about general bullshit, and shitposting about the game. When generals become that meandering, I wonder why they even exist.
>>
>>15669799
Alright thanks for pointing that out, there's a little patching here and there I'm working on.
>>
>>15670319
That was less of a general and more of a generic IBO thread that was made by an autist who obsessively made a new "general" the moment his last thread hit 300 posts no matter what time of the day it was. So it's not really a proper general in the traditional sense, whatever you could call a traditional general anyway.

>>15670348
The Symphogear thread is what happens when people keep a thread about a show with no new content going for long periods of time until eventually they get something new: the regulars are all massive waifufags making the same repetitive posts over and over.

I own it, and it is great in almost every way possible. Only PG that is arguably better than it is GP01. If you can get it at a good price, get it. You won't be disappointed. The scarf right now is to test the materials I got and how it would look on the final product. I'll probably make proper ends out of plaplate for it.

For the clear parts I'm painting the ones on the legs for sure. The ones on the chest I'm no sure about. The shoulder pads were removed for the gauntlets.

Speaking of which these were originally gonna be mounted on the sides of the arms, but they looked and posed a lot better when mounted on the back. Them being not that far in is due to me making them a bit too large than originally planned, so they're more arm guards than the arms themselves. Their positioning is kinda fluid in the show anyways so having them like this is a good enough compromise for me

all right, need to watch symphogear one day. not sure what your plan for the scarf are, but you should add polycaps to one end of the scarf to add more pose ability
>>
>>15670593
I've used Milliput's blue and yellow stuff. It's a little tougher to work with than I would want, it likes to crumble if you try to shape it into small pieces and angles while it's still soft. You have to wait maybe 45 minutes and then it cuts like it's butter. It works really well for what it is but it's tough as goddamn nails, I made an American quarter sized disc of it and could not break it with my hands no matter how hard I tried. This is not a desirable quality for such a thing because you'll inevitably have to sand and polish the putty once it's set which is going to be iffy if you place it on a soft plastic robot. Milliput is designed for military use and can take a beating, it's super handy but not really designed for this. Consider using the Greenstuff designed for Warhammer 40k, it SHOULD be easier to work with.
>>
>>15670593
tamiya is all good, and can be thinned down with their thinners, milliput is a 2 part epoxy putty, something that is only really good for large scale kits, from my experience milliput can be a bit iffy when it comes to the mixing and how it cures, if ya gonna do 144 or 100 kits just go with the tamiya basic putty
>>
>>15670669
>>15670685
Thanks for the replies and info. I'll just hold off until I can get some gloves and mask to work with and use Tamiya.

And I'll save the Milliput for heavier duty fixes elsewhere.

Neo Zeon and the Federation weren't making these suits on their own, Anaheim Electronics was helping them. The guy's probably gave a few away to keep the war going a bit longer to make some profit on the side, and so that when they needed parts to be fixed or replaced, Neo Zeon would need to pay more for specialized parts. Maybe if you pour the paint out of them and use brushes, the actual markers can't apply anything evenly. Even small color apps will look awful. The only use I have for them is just dabbing a bit of paint over discolored nub mark remnants on red and blue plastic since I can never seem to get them perfectly clean even with 2000 grit sandpaper

The only funky one is the Barbatos, honestly. It has some odd proportions and other changes compared to the HG. Moreso the Gusion Rebake fixed all the issues, but it has a unique frame for literally no reason. The rest of the kits are very good, even for having some polycap joints. Grimgerde is the best one, honestly, and it's annoying we never got a Reincar lol
>>
>>15672951
>but it has a unique frame for literally no reason
So you can build it as either Rebake or Frog is kind of the opposite of "literally no reason."

Now for reasons that Rebake and Frog couldn't have been separate fucking kits, that's a different debate.
>>
>>15672981
but the molds make next to no difference from the original frame, except for the knees and some slots. The Gusions seem to have a much better frame than the original Barbatos's, so I don't get why they didn't switch over to it

Quite curious from a somewhat new Gunpla shitter perspective but has delved in other shit like Airfix, what's the best size/price group if you want to really get into painting and customising?

Like I get the appeal of MGs, PGs etc. but from a purely painters perspective, it seems like HGs would be the best choice. The main selling point of the larger sizes is the mechanical detail but that doesn't seem to do anything from the painting angle. I've seen some absolutely fantastically painted HGs.

>>
>>15675103
You're on the right path. If you want to do custom work, the cheaper entry cost, wider selection, and the simplified structure of the HG line make it a good choice.
>>
>>15675103
depends on your goal.
HG is mostly oriented at giving you the closest " as seen on tv" model of a robot.
MG/RG has a " realistic" as in inner frame or some mechanical detailing( pipes , articulations , color separation of the runners , proportions , etc etc.

if you want to go wild on th artistic sense you could try with the 1/100th non grade scale , plenty surface to scratch whatever details you want, and pieces big enough to be creative with masking, washes, airbrush , you name it .

HG has improved but the engineern of some old kits is really lame, anything from 2007 onwards is decent , HG has a wider ranger of models so you have more to choose if you want to kit bash something.

and.... you could always check dalong.net for a comprehensive review of any kit before you spend any cash, helps a lot
>>
>>15675103
My first attempt at building and painting a Master Grade made me want to commit suicide. What took a week at most in building, sanding, priming, painting and coating a HG took me a fucking month and a bit with that MG Garbera Tetra.

You have to be INCREDIBLY dedicated to customize MGs and above. If you want to dive right in and be done in a short amount of time, go for HGs.

i started painting the pilots recently .. it's a nice side quest while building a mg, gives me something to do while literally waiting for paint to dry heh. i don't paint as well as you - i figure too much effort isn't warranted (the pilots's legs are pretty much all you can see for the seated versions, and just enough detail to distinguish identities is all that's required).

what do you use for that nice skin tone? i'm lazy and just use 'cream' for everything remotely fleshtoned.

Pink Linings.

There's lots of things that can be done to improve the quality of potato photos. Potatoes tend to produce grainy photos in dark light, so good lighting is one of the quickest and easiest improvements, and it looks to be something that was missing from your picture. On most smartphones, you can tell the camera what to focus on by tapping the object on the screen before taking the picture, I'd recommend trying that too.

The paint is spotty on the back of the shoulders. Too thin in some places, weird fibers on others. I didn't have enough PSI or the right needle size to spray my topcoat, so I had to thin it heavily, so it's basically not even protected. The paint is rubbing off really badly where the arm meets the chest and on the polycaps.

Now I know for the next build.

>>
>>15676201
nail file sticks should do just fine. if you're getting stress white marks on the plastic, cut further away from the piece, then shave it down gently till you're close. Then start filing

If you still get issues then your knife isn't sharp enough. Care to show a picture of a nub mark you struggled with, or a picture of your tools?

Sometimes I manage to remove them pretty neatly but just in general its a toss up as to weather or not I'll gouge the piece with my knife or scratch the area around the piece slightly when the nub starts getting smaller.

Pic related probably isn't the best example since its from one of my very first kits where I'm not even sure I had tried to remove the nub but its all ive got since im away from home right now
>>
Going to be doing my first battle damage stuff soon, not sure how to go about it. I plan on using a sodering iron to look like parts of it have been hit by a beam saber, maybe sticking little wires in certain areas where limbs have been sliced off, etc.

What else should I use? And should I bother topcoating before I start weathering it?
>>
>>15676212
It looks like you're trying to cut flush against the piece with the knife, and that's why you're gouging it.

Ideally, whatever you cut it with initially, you cut at the other end of the gate (thin plastic that connects it to the runner/tree). Then in your hand or on your mat you cut it again, closer to the piece. Some people lay it flat and just cut the nub down to the surface they are working on, but I find that as your blade dulls, and you never know when it will, you'll cause stress marks this way, in fact anytime you cut with the knife close to the piece you can.

Here's how I was taught to cut nubs to avoid stressing and not ever gouge. Start with your blade flat to the surface like you're going to just cut it off in one swoop. Then angle the front of the blade like you're going to just shave the top of the nub off, with the back still against this piece. This way you're cutting away from the piece and won't gouge. Now small cuts at first will help you gauge strength requirements and while this sounds tedious by the time you finish a kit you'll have a comfort level for how many cuts you want to do to cut a piece off.

I also suggest you switch sides of the nub so instead of cutting a ramp-shape you cut a point, that is cut away from the piece, shaving the top off from each side. The reason is you're going to have to file down what remains, and you'll leave less plastic behind to have to file away. If you cut into the plastic like you have done, you have to file some of the part down just to hide the gouges.

Proper tools help. If you can afford like ~6 bucks, local hobby/craft stores have nippers. If not in models area, check jewelry. They're sometimes called side cutters.

A hobby file instead of nail file helps as well, they take the plastic off faster. Lasts forever, I got one for a couple bucks at hobby, but tamiya files are about 6 bucks and pretty damned nice.

Thanks for the tips, I'll practice what you mentioned on some unbuilt weapons I have laying around. Maybe buy myself a new knife too.
>>
>>15676277
If you're using an exacto knife, the cheapest, most highly available option, plenty come with spare heads as well as purchasable packs of heads that are cheap.

I replace these about one every HG, sometimes two if it's working fine and not causing issue. More if I care less about the kits.

Dull blades are dangerous. More force required to cut, and overcuts into the piece, surrounding items and yourself are very likely.
>>
>>15676294
Oh wow, Im on maybe my 11th kit and I'm still using my dad's old exacto knife with the same blade. Time to invest in a new one I think.
>>
>>15676297
New one will slide through like butter. Quick tip I don't like to share but it'll do someone who's a little more rugged like you some good.

I keep a second exacto blade handle and put my last old knife blade in it. So a new one in one handle and the old one goes into another. Throw away what ever one was in the old handle every time, and pass down the other blade from new handle to old.

I use the old one for most stuff, especially inner frame pieces, pieces that will be hidden. I use the new one on kits I love, outer armor, etc. This gets more mileage out of old blades.
>>
>>15675772

I realized I added too many weapons and it might shoot itself if I don't pose it carefully enough.
>>
>>15676297
It sounds weird but you're also much less likely to cut yourself with a new sharp blade because it will cut more consistently than worn one
