There are a handful of Cream Lemon episodes that are on the same level as a real super robot anime, but with porn. The reason for this is that in the 80s a lot of otaku were lolicons I guess, since Obari worked on Cream Lemon before getring his start and so did a lot of others. Since it was porn, the crators could get away with doing basically whatever they wanted, and hotblooded mecha comedy was what they wanted I guess.

Not really. A lot of it translate well as is and those parts that don't are easily understandable if you're just a little familiar with some cultural aspects.

If Americans can enjoy British comedy from the 1960s and 70s, they can get Japanese comedy just fine.

The only thing that doesn't translate well is the wordplay, but that's one of the few areas where a little translation note is acceptable, because the jokes tend to be funny, you just have to be told what it is.
