***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

== THICK MS GROUPBUILD ==

Build a kit of your choice that's heavily armored, and thick in the thighs/arms/torso/general area. Examples include:
>Dom + Dom Variants
>The O
>Virtue/Seravee Gundams
>Gusion/Man Rodis
>Full Armor gundams (If they're heavily armored, and not guns strapped everywhere like the FA Unicorn)

Non-Bandai kits are allowed, so feel free to whip out a Frame Arms kit or something and work with that as long as you make it thicc as fuck.

Start Date: 6/15
End Date: 8/31
>>
>>15629020
If I ever met you in real life, I would pretend to be your friend, and then I would come into your house under a friendly guise and break all your gunpla, and computer. I would steal your money, and leave you for broke.

When are you going to understand that NO ONE likes you? When are you going to get that you are WASTING YOUR TIME. Is it fun to you to be the most annoying shitposter on /m/? Either you're a troll, or you're so mentally retarded that you actually think you have even a modicum of respect here.

Just fuck off already, no one cares about you, your discord, your shitty builds, or your horrible opinions.

Don't. The namefags thrive on the negative attention. The only way to hurt them is to just do what everyone else does and pretend they don't exist.

Is it retarded to try and build something from the 90s for my first try?
I picked up one of these at a flea market because I like Macross but I've never built any of these before
Is it even worth trying or should I just keep it in the box as it is?
>>
>>15629030
I just can't fucking take it anymore. I'm a decent enough guy, I'm well liked, and I treat my friends well with compassion and respect, but I am not even joking when I say I wish something really bad would happen in shitfits life. I wish he would loose his house, or get an STD(not that he even has sex), overdose on drugs, fuck, ANYTHING.

I'm done after this post talking about it, as I know you're right. But FFS enough is enough.

ARII Macross model kits were notoriously bad. Keep in mind they actually came out in the 80s and the 15th Anniversary kits from the 90s were a reprint using old ass molds. I've built one before and it was a real headache. Sink holes that need resurfacing, piece that don't line up properly, very little detail, barely any articulation and inaccurate sculpts. Also you have to use a ton of glue, paint and putty to even make it look decent.

You can build it, but it'll put you off working on models as a hobby.

Start with a simple HG model instead.

The fact that you bought a 17 year old kit and expected it to be on par with modern ones.
>>
>>15629394
>You bought a 17 year old kit

Not exactly, that's a just released kit for a current anime project and is one of the lead ms and heavily featured alongside the gundam in the promotional material. Bandai just reused one of the oldest hguc for it and made it p-bandai.
>>

Uh, the seamlines are part of the challenge.

It's literally a 17 year old kit.

A 17 year old kitbash with literally no new parts included.

You could arguably make a better model by buying its constituent parts and making it yourself.

Depends on how much you value the MS. I have a lot of P-Bandai kits, and I've been happy with all of them except one because I'm an MSV junkie. Only one I wasn't happy with was Banshee Novel Final Battle Ver. because the joints were EXTREMELY loose for some reason. I was hype as shit when all the Jegan variants started coming out and I've got a bunch now, and will be trying to get them all. Fucking plastic crack.

Yes.

I agree with this. Like the GM Sniper II white dingo version. Just get the regular sniper and paint it the color scheme you want. They're models for Christ sakes.

I've got two questions. What is a good, durable primer to use, I'm not a huge fan of Vallejo's. On top of that, what would be a good varnish to use, too, that's not acrylic based? I've got a Graze I still need to top-coat cuz I just don't trust Vallejo's varnishes, plus it gums up my airbrush, even with thinning
>>
>>15630787
for primer, i either use mr surfacer or the tamiya primer that are laquer based. for top coat, i just use the tamiya rattle can, never tried applying topcoat with an airbrush
>>
>>15630578
>>
>>15630787
Primers:

Choice of
Mr. Color whatever, plus Mr Base White/Base Black
Badger Stynylrez
Mission Models Primer
Tamiya Liquid Surfacer Primer

Stynylrez when fully cured can take wet coats of Mr. Color.

MM's Primers claim to be able to take lacquer paints on top.

Mr Color and Tamiya need no explanation.

>>15630030
Well, two ways I do it are a.) I trace a shape, copy it on thin plaplate, cut them all out, cement 'em all together in a big stack, then whittle and sand until it has the desired shape. B.) Is that I create a shape foundation, fill it with layers of plaplate/cement or that crazy epoxy putty, then seal it up with plates that match the outside shape. Fill any gaps with tamiya putty and sand to shape. Sorry if this is hard to understand, its kinda hard to explain! The chest in pic related may help explain B. A little better, I hope!

Sorry man, I missed your post. I got the curved bits by cutting the shapes I wanted on thin plaplate, tracing each shape using the piece I cut out rather than the "template" so that its size increases a little with each trace. This compensates for length loss during the next phase. Anyway, I cement the plate to the curved surface, and once its stable, I cement the next, slightly larger plate onto it. Then the next even larger piece onto that one. Whittle, putty, and sand to desired shape! Pic related is just how many shapes I had to cut put for that one section.

Hello there, I want to get into painting but I don't want to spend Money on Tamiya stuff, also because I have literally 100+ acrylic colors in My House, but, is there something I should take notice about acrylic (something Like "if this acrylic says it has x inside better you don't use it)? Or can I use all of them without have to worry about anything?

P.s. Yes, I Will thin My paints, of Course.
>>
>>15631376
An acrylic needs to be safe for plastic. Hobby paints are specially formulated for plastic.

There are many brands available for you, Tamiya, Citadel, and Mr. Hobby being a few of the more popular brands. You can search for other brands by yourself.

What brand do you have?
>>
>>15631383
I cannot check right now (I'll surely do it later)
But I'm almost sure that it isn't any brand you suggested, I guess it's way more generic.
I don't really want to buy hobby paint, when I have so many colors to use.

The rx-78 frame has different proportions from the mk II. "3.0" wasn't intended as a new sub line anyways, it was the plan B name they had to go with because the name they wanted to use for the MG of the 1:1 statue got caught up in legal shenanigans.

Why does Prime92 get a lot of hate?
Some of her paint jobs/customs are decent.

Is it because you don't like her distorting her voice?
Is it her hands?
Or is there any other reason for it?

Yes.

A lot of people have a hard time grasping this here because it's pretty much an echo chamber for the idea that *insert niche series* is popular, but if a series doesn't have at least have an anime that's serious points against it.

AoZ didn't do too hot back when it was still fresh and new and got general release HG kits. I don't know why you would expect it to do better now.

Honestly, I think this release is Bandai testing the waters on that front. Even if they're recycling the frame, it seems like there's too many new runners for your ordinary P-Bandai release. It might be like the Pale Rider, where they intend to steadily dripfeed out the various variants through future P-Bandai releases.

And if it all sells well enough, then maybe they'll take that as proof that AoZ is popular. Too bad that's never happening.

Considering their height, where does dust, earth and mud make sense on gundam kits?

Anything past the feet or lower legs is probably too high for mud, but on the other hand who knows how much dust and earth would be put into the air when a 20 meter tall robot moves or uses thrusters.
>>
>>15632245
pretty much just the feet and maybe the knees and hands
one good rule of thumb to make your mud and stuff look good is to keep the little pilot figure around for a sense of scale. Mud splotches only get so big, after all
>>
>>15632250

That's another thing I'm having some issues with, the scale.

Applying 1:35 armor logic to 1:144 gundams might look silly if you consider reality, but if I were to stick to the scale you might barely be able to see it at all, which is also a little boring.

I'll just try to keep things small, don't think I can pull off what would actually make sense anyway.

I'm doing more or less a desert build at the moment, so I feel like dust could be literally anywhere.

This whole imagination vs reality thing is really bothering me, I want to do cool shit but I also want it to make at least some sense.
>>
>>15632273
For a desert build I'd think sand would build up in natural creases on the gundam and in the joints. And your flat surfaces should have paint damage from getting sandblasted
>>
>>15632295

I'll be using a chipping medium so the paint damage is covered, though I were under the impression that it would be more concentrated on the edges and the like rather than the flat, open areas.

Depends on what kind of environment you envision your model to be walking around in. For places with large bodies of water where the mobile suits may have taken a dip, like a coastline or beside a lake, you'd figure there would be some amount of water wear on them, but for inland forest environs the wear may be limited to just the boots and shins. The ground is more sturdy and rocky so less gets kicked up. Swamps and rain forests are somewhere in between the two so you'd have the dirt and mud along with the splashing water to add on top of that. Deserts that have sizable dunes would have sand get kicked up all over the place and cause a dirt buildup in various crevices and joints throughout the mobile suit.
>>
Does enamel paint or thinner do anything weird to rubber power pipes? First time I've ever seen this material in a kit.

I was thinking something like middle eastern desert, as I am inspired by the merkava tank in terms of the color scheme.

I am going to have some rust on it since it seems like rust is present to at least some extent even in the desert, and I don't intend to have it be well maintained. Not mad max, but still in that direction.

I guess it would be (mostly) too dry for any mud, but with quite a bit of dust.

>>15632339

How would you achieve that kind of effect?

>>15632331

Enamel paint can harm all kinds of plastic if you don't have any paint protecting it.
>>
>>15631924
I remember a video where she showed how to paint a sinanju candy coat and
>didn't use primer
>covered the part in some silver paint not designed for hand brushing
>covered that in like 20 layers of handbrushed unthinned tamiya clear red.
>>
>>15632422
Things in a desert will rust, but very little, and in a dry environment it won't really corrode and eat away at metal, so you'd just have little spots of surface rust. And no rust streaks since that's caused by water
As for gentle paint wear and dust, tamiya makes a product called buff for that, I think it's basically a very clear light tan color
>>
>>15632442
So how did the candy coat turn out?
>>
>>15632206
I should have went with the 3.0 instead of the Origin. Maybe I'll pick up 3.0 if it's ever on sale and swap the heads and legs.

I was already planning on using the equivalent of a tamiya buff overspray (I'm using vallejo) for dust, so that's nice.

Water is actually not needed in order for metal to rust, as it is the oxygen that actually causes it, but you're right about rust streaks.

I did use a rust color for the paint layer that will be exposed when I do the chipping so I might need to add some metal to them to simulate the sand "cleaning up" the rust, but it's fairly brown so it might not matter that much regardless.

First time doing weathering, always been a factory fresh builder/painted before this.
Plus the idea of flamethrowers on a plane... How could that POSSIBLY go wrong?

How does that make what they wrote wrong? You really can guess that something might have issues just by looking it up.

I know /m/ has a culture of spoonfeeding now, but you really should try to encourage people to learn things on their own.

I love his reviews cuz he's got this unique voice for a gunpla reviewer that doesn't make me want to kill myself, has good and in-depth reviews that aren't overlong but cover all the details, and the "oh and... One more thing..." segments are charming.... But once I saw his room and on video and.... Dear god... That wallpaper. He still loves with his parents doesn't he? Please say no ;_;
