***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

**MELEE GROUP BUILD**

Build/paint a robot with a loadout focused on melee combat! Anything from shields to swords to lances to axes to bare fists is fair game. There's no room for ranged weaponry here, however, so anything resembling a rifle, Rocket Launcher, cannon, pistol, or any other ranged weapon is a no-go (Small ranged weapons that are built into the kit itself like head vulcans are ok, however).

More clarification here:
>If the body part has a built-in ranged weapon (head/chest vulcans, claw beams, etc), then that's fine. If it's a separate part like the Alex's arm vulcans it's best to leave those off.
>Melee weapons with in-universe ranged capabilities (Like the Kimaris's lance or the Gyan's shield) are fair game too.
>Any scale and any brand is fair game here, you're not limited to just using Gundams this time around.

Bro, what are you doing? Let's talk this out.

Nippers>file>sand
>>
>>15516614
Recently I've just been using sharp nippers to cut flush with the edge.

Files always seemed to scratch the areas around the nub and I don't even know how you would use sandpaper to just get the nub and not leave scratches on the whole surface.

>>15516003
>>
>>15516634
Leave about a half centimeter of nub when you nip.
Then either use an exacto knife or file to get it closer to the surface.
Then sand it with 800-1000 grit until it's flush.
Then 2000 grit or a buffing block to polish away the scratches.

>>
>>15516651
Absolutely.
>>
>>15516634
Use your thumb or forefinger as a guide for the file, it's rough, but it won't hurt you. File down as far as you're comfortable with.

Use 1000 grit sand paper. Put it on the table and run the piece on the flattened sand paper. Wet sand paper is easier to work with and leaves a much smoother finish. Just keep a bowl next to you so you can clean the paper.

I don't even use my 1500 or 2000 grit anymore.

Uh, why? The RG looks like it has PG style arms and legs, which are a huge improvement over the HGUC and MGs.

If anything the Unicorns, for being flagship products from the flagship series of the decade, need to be redone on all levels to bring them up to par with the PG. The MGs are a complete travesty and the HGUCs are mediocre at best and if you have the money the RDs are a much better option all around.

Geez!! Is it too much to ask for to get a HG Origin MP Zaku II with a standard Zaku Machine Gun???
>>
>>15517168
Use the machine gun from every other zeon origin kit.
>>
>>15517168
I kinda like the pseudo belt fed thing they have going on. and that being a wire is the c type zaku 2 using a beam rifle?
>>
>>15517168
That's the machinegun the origin zaku c type uses. Just buy literally almost any other 1/144 zaku II released in the last 30 years if you want a more standard zaku machinegun. I've got like 5 of the damn things in my spare parts box.
>>
>>15517206
In the manga version at least there is literally nothing stopping the zaku from using beam weapons. They stick a guncannon head on one and have it use a beam rifle in the manga.

That being said I don't know if it was ever specified what was up with the cable or if it shot solid rounds or beams.
>>
>>15517168
You want one of mine? Lol I have zaku mgs up the but in alot of boxes. Besides this guy isnt the standard zaku II Its mid development zaku II. Zeon felt the need to further improve the zaku 1, Initially the first zaku II models ms-06a that were mass produced only improved the suit, they used only the original zaku weapons. Kycilia felt that it was lacking and told them to further improve the units, which were developed into the suit here.

Origin however is flipping everything around, giving feddie 100mm mgs to the earliest zeon prototypes, giving the zaku II mg to the zaku I and so on. To me the zaku I mg helped give it its on uniqueness which is now even less there now that origin took it away. Either way I could see it as a early zeon mg, Great for space combat, yet hindered mobility. I could also see it being problematic to reload if a feddie saberfish or later mobile suit cut a link in the ammo. Where as a mag being damaged or destroyed you just slap another one on it from your skirt or shield.

The thing I dont like is how they keep giving the anti ship rifle to every zaku as it seems like it is a rare weapon that only top pilots would use.

Just topcoated my stuff with gloss before trying to panel line. How many coats and How long should I wait before I panel line? A couple hours, or just give it the whole 24 hours to be safe?
>>
>>15517310
I do, they fall off and leave a conspicuously not top coated spot where they used to be. Maybe I should use a more delicate dusting material, I was using swifter sheets.
>>
>>15517032
Errr the cow isn't fat enough. Despite your personal views on the unicorn, it's very clear its still selling so well after 10 years straight which is why is why it is the statue choice too.
>>
>>15517347
Just checking, are they actual waterslide decals or are they those clear stickers.
>>
>>15517372
Actual water slides, but they were applied a very long time ago and I now have setter solution to use on future kits. Doing some research I see a lot of people use soft make up brushes to dust their kits. This seems like it might be less likely to fuck shit up on them, so I will go try that. I basically don't touch my kits because they get all dusty and I am afraid moving them will have them shed decals.

Welp, it's finally done.

There's so many little tiny fuckups and mistakes and corners cut. But the end result I think is pretty ok.

I decided to paint and prepare each piece (arms, each leg, waist, torso, head, shields) separately and it ended up being like building 6 smaller models. I'm glad I did that because my familiarity with the process of painting and preparing the model definitely increased as I went ahead, but in terms efficiency it was pretty bad. And it created a lot of burnout.

I'm looking forward to trying to build another Gunpla so I can refine my skills and apply what I learned from this project.

>Tfw bought a Dom in December planning to modify it's proportions and paint it in an imperial Japanese tank camo pattern but I couldn't figure out a good way to remove seam lines on the legs while keeping the knee joint as a separate, easy to paint piece, so now it's just permanantly sitting in a box of parts looking too ugly to display snap-built because I already started making the thighs and skirts longer with pla-plate/clay and fucked up the chest
>>
>>15517553
Nicely done anon. Though that one decal on the left side of the chest is kinda messed up. Did you use single letter decals and just tried to line them up or did you have custom slides made?
>>
>>15517779
It actually comes like that. It looks good once you see the other side wrap around. It spells out "Mecha" but under the "c" it does a cool squiggle.

I used custom decals that I got off Ebay. I was pleasantly surprised at how high the quality was.
>>
>>15517775
Just paint the joint, seam weld the leg with the now painted joint, then mask the joint. Simple fix.
>>
>>15517750

wait for the straight build reviews, it may not be as high contrast as this painted sample
>>
>>15517775
I had this problem recently! I was able to fix it by using Parafilm, which is basically stretchable, self-sticking wax paper.

You do the knee however you want it, paint it and put your gloss coat on it. Then you wrap it in stretched out Parafilm and build the leg pieces over it. When you finish painting the legs, you take a hobby knife and cut off chunks of parafilm and then pull the rest out with tweezers. It basically acts as a heavy duty saran wrap.

It's preferable to masking the knee because you don't run the risk of overspraying onto the knee in some hard to reach area that you didn't mask properly.

Does that work for this FA:G joint setup too? It perplexes me how other modellers managed to prime and paint it all assembled together.
>>
>>15517970
That's exactly the kind of situation where parafilm is really good. When it's stretched out it's really thin, so you can fit the leg pieces over it and do seam filling stuff.

I'd just recommend doing a lacquer varnish (or Tamiya) first on the knee or elbow part. Something really strong and cured. Or else the friction is going to rub that paint right off.
>>
>>15518021
>>15518021
I fucked up an RX-78 model by using Humbrol liquid mask + masking tape over the joints.

Then I botched the gloss (pre-decal) so hard, you could see it pool and yellow out.

Now the only way to strip all the rest of the botched layers is with a sonic cleaner. Alcohol soak took care of most layers, but the lacquer paint layers are still lumpy and flaky, and won't come off.

Unless, that spraying lacquer primer again will melt and hide the flaky lacquer layer edges from the botched paint stripping...

...is the crude method to this, "do a mist spray of primer over the entire assembly, bend the elbow/knees, mist spray the uncovered parts, un-bend, and repeat till you get a full primer coat?".... or not?

Kotobukiya ABS plastic might not be so kind to being sawed and c-jointed for joint separation/re-snapping unlike gunpla ABS, I take it? But nobody on the two boards has gone and repainted these kits extensively.

First paint job, so I'm a mix of proud and shamed by how I did. I can see a lot of mistakes and now know better what to do the next time I paint. The biggest problem is obviously using matte paint. For whatever reason, it didn't occur to me that it'd be difficult to panel line. So I'm contemplating trying to find a similar colored gloss paint to try to salvage the rest of the build. In order to hide the shame of not panel lining, I'm probably going to try to fashion a tiny cloak to cover the chest.
>>
>>15518206
yeah, thinking of doing one of each in honor of the GM heavy lineup this year
>>
>>15518238

Matte paint thing aside it's looking pretty good, the paint doesn't seem way too thick especially for spraypaint. Next time will be a lot easier!
>>
>>15518253
No kidding. And thanks. I like the way the colors came out, I just wish I could panel line it. I tried it on a surface that won't be visible, but the gundam pen actually scratched off a little paint.

I'm gonna look either tomorrow or this weekend for some gloss sprays that are close to my browns and greens to use on the shoulders, arms, legs, and guns to see if I can match it close enough.

>>
>>15518263
I don't know how well paint flows on matte surfaces, but you could always try thinning down some water based acrylic and use that to panel line. I tried that out on my last build because I frayed my gundam markers tip trying to panel line a painted kit with it, and I think it came out pretty well.

if all those colors are done in florescent, I think you'll be onto something. You could also look into some animal pattern masking solutions for some hot pink leopard print.
>>
>>15518678
Vallejo is pretty tough once it cures, but it takes several days, up to a week, to totally cure. It'll dry to the touch within an hour and can be easily handled, but it'll be susceptible to scratches and paint rubbing off on corners.

I'd give it a day between painting and masking to let it set up. You can do most assembly once it's dry to the touch, but you gotta be careful. If you're assembling any parts that move against each other, you NEED to let the paint cure or the friction will rub the paint off. So stuff like elbow joints, knees, etc.

With china they dropped the creepy doll aesthetic and kept it simple like the lineart. No rounded chin, sunken eyes, weirdly protruding lips. What made fumina creepy is that it was the lineart with a halfassed attempt at realistic features.

No idea what happened with gyanko. [Spoiler] I honestly don't think the face itself is that inaccurate. She looks just as frog faced in the ki as she is in the lineart, I think the real issue is that people don't like the expression vandai went with and the long thin neck is throwing them off.

I want both, as for the zaku 2 revive its mostly because of the arms, they have angled edged forearms. Even if I manage to round them out its design still is more akin to zaku ii f2, making the evolution of its progress seem way faster. That and I like the more humanoid shape.

I use Reaper for handpainting a lot. I find them to be pretty good, although their dropper bottles tend to clog, so keep a safety pin handy. Just make sure it's well shaken and use a little more thinner than you would with Vallejo and you should be good.

Either my fingernail or a wooden skewer, but the problem is that I'm building a MG Zaku 2.0 which has a lot of curved surfaces, and since the sheet the dry transfers are on is so thick, it usually has problems with adhering to the surface properly. Also the fact that the sheet is ready to peel off at a moment's notice, leaving some spots that haven't fully applied themselves yet

>got airbrush yesterday
>most things going decently so far

I've read that you are supposed to use ~15 PSI, spray fairly close to the piece so that the paint doesn't dry mid air and that the coat needs to go on "wet" so that's what I have been trying to do, but I end up getting a half decent result at best. I'm not sure if I'm getting "orange peel" but it's not good enough, that much I know.

It's a really fun kit to pose
>>
>>15519833
In general you should be using highly thinned paint with lose PSI. If you apply paint too heavily, it's going to pool. It'll look very bad.

First of all, Google "high gloss Gundam" or "high gloss model". That'll give you a better idea if what you want.

Second of all, you should be achieving the gloss look in the varnish stage, normally. You want to make sure your primed area is super level and thin, even sanding it with a 1500+ grit sandpaper if necessary. Then you apply your color. Then apply your gloss varnish in multiple thin coats. As in, do a gloss coat that is so thin that it doesn't pool, then let it dry, then do another one. If it's still not glossy enough, once the varnish has had multiple days to cure, you can use very fine sanding paper (2500+ grit) and/or a buffing cloth (microfiber) to make it have that mirror shine.
>>
>>15519683
Nice points! This highlights some very bothersome trends in kibble centred gunpla techniques.
>>
>>15519904

Right now I'm trying to do an okay glosscoat so that I can panel line, as well as a decent gloss black primer for the metallic colours as in
>>15519868

In that case in particular I'm not sure pooling is the issue, but thanks for the advice.
>>
>>15519916
You're definitely getting obvious orange peel. Like I said, you want to make sure you're doing multiple thin coats. You can also try using more thinner so it spreads out. And try buffing with a microfiber cloth.

Also for the purpose of panel-lining, you don't need a heavy gloss coat. If you put too much varnish on, you're going to flood the panel line and then your panel line wash won't work.
>>
>>15519929

All right, I'll lower my standards for the temporary gloss coats and follow your advice.

Do I want to use retarder or flow aid in addition to thinning for gloss coats or does that just risk making it runny?
>>
>>15518745
Still waiting for those preorders
>>
>>15519944
I use Vallejo flow improver whenever I airbrush with acrylics. I find that it works well to produce a smoother finish.

The runny problem is less of an issue with how thinned your paints are and more of an issue with how much time you spend with the airbrush pointed at the part, plus the distance you airbrush at. More paint = less control = more pooling and running. Closer airbrush = more paint in a specific spot. So it's a Goldilocks situation. You want enough paint that you're coating it, but not enough paint that its super wet.

Quickly pass over the part at a reasonable distance. Then wait for it to look dry (should only take a few seconds). Repeat until it's totally painted.
>>
>>15519962

So I should do a quick pass with paint lever pulled quite far? Using a 0.4 nozzle/needle atm if it matters.

I got myself an MG Sinanju (OVA Colors) kit a long while back, and I'm set to start working on it in the near future.

I want to repaint the thing because I've been painting miniatures for a few years, and want to apply what I've learned there to this. I plan on priming and painting the thing after putting together and sealing off the panel lines from as much of it as possible. If there's armor pieces I can just slide onto the skeleton, then that'd be awesome.

Anyway, I want to stick close to the stock colors if at all possible- since I'm using an airbrush, I want to grab from the Vallejo Model Air line if at all possible- though I'm open to others. For anyone who's done the Sinanju, what colors have you all found that match it the most? I'll be airbrushing AND physically brushing as necessary. I might even forego the gold decals if painting gold on looks better in the end- as much as I hate painting on gold.

It's so close anon, the alternate chest panel is so close!!! I'm wondering if it has the alternate torso panels with the gatlings that every other release had.

>tfw fucked up on the v fin and forehead jewel o my revive RX 78
>friend is kind enough to let me use the v finding his RG
>looks obviously off, pretty loose too so I'm afraid it might just fall out and disappear like what happened with BOTH gundams I've built so far

Gunpla is pain for a ham-handed buffoon like me

Some of the parts of it got lost over time and he generally stopped caring about toys

>>15520606
Every time I have used superglue something terrible has happened
It's really not THAT loose, but the way I fiddled with it it's too low on the head

whats the ballpark minimum order and frequency to get set up with bluefin distribution?
>>
>>15520718
I painted the parts black so that light specifically would only come out of the one part not painted black
>>
>>15520785
Maybe I'm misinterpreting what you painted, I assume it's the sides of the monoeye lens, with the front and back obviously left clean?

If that's the case, a smooth, reflective coat of silver the in place of the black might reflect more light to the front of the monoeye, whereas black just absorbs light, or better yet, if you could get those stickers where the reflective side is also the sticky side, like the ones used on the Nu Ver Ka's psycho-frame.

I meant the little disc thing that allows the monoeye lens to turn

Guy painting the GM green/brown here.
I'm considering doing the sniper rifle without the scope for reasons. Would I just need to putty the open part where the scope goes on order to seal it off and paint over that after appropriately sanding and etc.?

Also, I'm torn between painting it dark green to match my GM, painting it some sort of spray camo pattern, or painting it brown including the top gray piece to give it a sort of SMS vibe.
