For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

**MELEE GROUP BUILD**

Build/paint a robot with a loadout focused on melee combat! Anything from shields to swords to lances to axes to bare fists is fair game. There's no room for ranged weaponry here, however, so anything resembling a rifle, Rocket Launcher, cannon, pistol, or any other ranged weapon is a no-go (Small ranged weapons that are built into the kit itself like head vulcans are ok, however).

More clarification here:
>If the body part has a built-in ranged weapon (head/chest vulcans, claw beams, etc), then that's fine. If it's a separate part like the Alex's arm vulcans it's best to leave those off.
>Melee weapons with in-universe ranged capabilities (Like the Kimaris's lance or the Gyan's shield) are fair game too.
>Any scale and any brand is fair game here, you're not limited to just using Gundams this time around.

reposting my response to >>15502414 so it doesn't get lost.

I cant speak much about airbrushing techniques because I'm still trying to get good at that, but for the weathering I took it slow, thinking about where parts would rub up against each other during movement and dry brushed some black and silver in those areas.

I read that you should try to make a story with your weathering, so I tried that out too, basically thinking of various ways inexperienced pilots would mess up while piloting. Bumping into things, falling over, dropping weapons, etc. and tried to communicate that through dry brushing and some pastels.

I read about panel lining with a sort of pastel water mixture and tried it out to mixed results, so I ended up thinning some black acrylic paint and using it instead, and since its water based it was easy enough to remove any mistakes.

I hope this helps!

One off prototypes that can use existing molds and future mold parts like full armor for example. So unless its of a new suit in upcoming episode gouf, rx-78-1, dom in a way have molds. Granted pic related uses the original rx-78-1 design over origins but using land combat type, guncannon, full armor parts I could see bandai making it. But being the full armor gundam ground type it probably be pbandai where as our full armor parts would be the main kit.

Especially with the handful of variants they can milk out of it. Hopefully it wont hinder them from making hguc versions as origin is a different visual feel. Be nice to see them side by side too.

We're also missing three stages of the dom line. The final prototype being this boy, the other two being modified goufs for testing apparently. A high mobility and a test prototype type (lame name).

But for some reason it feels like they'd rather make another new variant that fits between the known ones.

I checked the OP, and there's not mention of the specifics but I'm new to gunpla and have some markers. I got a set that came with 4 slanted tipped ones with tips that dispense liquid paint. It also came with one that has a fine tip felt marker. I went to get more colors and ended up with ones that have tips similar to mechanical pencils.

Can someone give me a rundown of the differences and uses?
-Are they the same paint type or different?
-It seems the ones that dispense paint are good for panel lining like I've seen in videos. Just press and it flows through the thin channels. What other jobs on the gundam can they be used for?
-The thin tip seems like a normal coloring marker. I'm afraid the tip will wear easily with use, what is it intended for?
-The mechanical pencil tipped ones (gm01/02/03) are really nice, and I've been using them for some of the panel lining too. Any tips for these?
-When I have an open space to detail, which one should I use? (as opposed to an edge or thin channel)

Hand brush. Assuming you aren't painting the rest of the kit, you might not need to mask, if the paint spills over, you can just remove the excess with thinner.

You wont have the control you would with a fine brush. Not only surface space, but also flow.
Personally, I find them unwieldy.

You could use the thin panel lining ones, that might work. And you basically should have one. I believe they only come in three colors though, black, grey and brown.
>>
>>15503040
You should always check you have everything before you start building.

They are for panel lining so basically easy to wipe away, they'll get more bite with a top coat, especially a matte coat.

But I would say getting a 1 dollar brush and a thing of paint is the best and easiest option.
Just make sure you read the guide or google about paint types. Some paints are a easier than other to hand bush. Although if you're just painting those little guns it really shouldn't matter.

Ground Gundam is snapped together. Gonna finish the weapons today and then get on to detailing. So I'm going to weather and I'm using Real Touch Gundam Markers. Should I panel line, decal and flat coat before I weather? Or should I panel line, decal, weather then flat coat? I know you flat coat before using the Tamiya weathering kits but I'm unsure for the real touch markers.

You're going to want to paint the whole thing if you're weathering. Weathering doesn't look good on bare plastic, so if you're not painting, then don't bother weathering. Just panel line, top coat, and call it a day.

RG Zaku is a ton of fun to build, it was actually my first build as well. The problems that the RG Zaku has are
>The waist armor falls off pretty easily, but once you glue it on its all good
>The piping is a pain in the ass to do, though it was back when I first started so who knows, It might not be as bad as I remembered
>The shoulder pads are incredibly hard to put on, might need to shave the peg down a bit
>The waist joints are not the most solid, and if you keep playing with it, after a few months they start getting stress lines and becoming weaker, and they might even break.
It still is the best kit for the Zaku in my opinion though. The way the armor moves and exposes the inner frame underneath is top notch.

I've noticed you post that Astray before, and while it looks good, have you considered painting the gold parts on the sword/sheath? It would be really easy to do with a brush and gold Gundam marker, since the gold parts are a solid color.

Decided to paint the red/white bits on the Super Minipla Xabungle after working on Ideon yesterday. The Xabungle is nowhere near as good as Ideon is, every joint is either a ball joint or built into the shoulder/thigh meaning taking it apart to clean/paint is a pain.

It's exactly as the name implies. It's a Barbatos Lupos painted in chrome, silver, and gunmetal with a damaged left arm and tattered midnight blue cloth.

There's still some extra things I can do here and there, like adding physical damage to the left shoulder and welding the seam on the right forearm (currently the pieces are separate in case I need to remove them), but overall the project is done.

...and yes, my desk is a mess.

Cheap white cotton cloth and water-based acrylic paint. Painted one side black, paint the other a really dark blue, then haindpainted a Tekkadan emblem (Which you'd only really see on the kit if you were looking at it from the back) on one end in white.

The paint mixed into the cloth has a neat side effect. When water is applied (obviously after you've let the paint dry), it becomes flexible. When it dries, it becomes rigid, holding whatever shape it was left in as it dried.
>>
>>15506347
Honestly I just scribble in the lines, then rub off with a q tip with a few drops of lighter fluid. Comes out beautiful and is fast. Gundam markers are more expensive, more intensive, but allow you to have less skill and do it faster.

I think most people have built or should build the vanilla GM and Zaku II. Jim's old but still cheap and serviceable, and there's a billion trillion Zaku II variants that usually only change color. Origin Zakus are perfect kits for a first-time builders and experienced modelers.

I watched MSG, Zeta, I forgot how far into Unicorn. Picked up Mobile Fighter G Gundam on recommendation, liked it so much it's been permanently on my media server since, and I may eventually purchase the blurays.

Watching 08th MS Team right now on Episode 8. I may rewatch Zeta, the 3 movie one to skip rewatching it all since I barely remember it, just remember loving Quattro. Then I'll revisit Unicorn to find out if I finished it, then I'll move on from there. Probably in release order.

MG AGE-1 arrived in the country Saturday, should be here hopefully by the end of the week. It was just a little over the 22 euro limit for no customs fees, but hopefully Mandarake mark it as a gift like they've done a lot of my other orders that went over the limit, like the MG F91

So I just got two Burning Gundams (build)
One that has a shitton of flame effects and one more plain one.
1/100 MG Super Mode (gold) God Gundam
1/144 hgfc God Gundam
and old 1/144 ez8 and a newer 1/100 ez8
Plus a green (eye) marker, thin tamiya cement, and that combo set of guntank, guncannon, and gundam RX-78-2.
How'd I do?

On backorder previously are a ball, a char's zaku, a 1/60 shining and 1/60 god gundam.

I have a nice looking sword for my groupbuild, but it's missing a pommel and looks really off without one.

Any suggestions on how to make a small pommel?
>>
>>15507089

Make the handle out of a screw, use a nut in the right diameter for the pommel.

That way your mobile suit can unscrew the pommel and throw it at the enemy to end him rightly.
>>
>>15505150
You'll get the hang of it. There's a lot of trial & error in getting weathering just right. Best advice I can give is to focus on areas you know will see lots of wear & tear first (any prominent edges that stick out that would take an impact before the main body). Dry brushing the whole body may not produce the effect you really want. Use it in combination with washed out colors to show that this suit's been used and abused a lot.

Is it common for modellers to mix up a batch of paint/primer that's thinned down for airbrushing...

...and then pour it in a new bottle for later use (like if you're gonna use that bottled batch over a span of two to three weeks up to a month)?

(It would help me a lot if I could tweak a batch of Badger primer ahead of time; My stuff either sprays out too watery, or gets clogged in the cup/straw.)

It's pretty solid to me, front skirts are a little wonky, but as you can see with the pics I've posted (the one you're replying to and >>15502578 ) it's quite posable.

Also, it comes with a bunch of neat extra stuff (heads, antennas, weps, decals) and is a fun build too. Not many pieces felt too small, though my only other experience with a RG is an RX-78-2, so take that how you want. Compared to grandaddy, this thing is a tank.

it'd be a sticker that says bluefin on it, if you bought from a jap store it's not there.

Questions:

1. How well does a Tamiya primer coat resist lacquer solvent in paints?

2. For gloss paint coats, what's the minimum grade of Mr Hobby surfacer/primer to work with, that's probably equivalent to Tamiya Fine Primer white?

3. For prepping surfaces for gloss/metallics/pearl coats, do you really need polishing compound on micromeshes/films, or is sanding sponge + dish detergent good enough?
>>
>>15508654

tamiya primer is a lacquer and it's fine to use lacquers on

I like 1000 to finishing 1500 for everything, you can always make paint flat easily with topcoat, much harder to make something glossy later

depends how nice the surface is, I'd spend more time polishing the primer than the plastic itself because primer is typically a little matte and polishes nicely

micromesh pads are a great investment and last a really long time
>>
>>15508692
So watery dish detergent on a 4000+ (up to 10k) sanding sponge won't cut it?
>>
>>15508723

that will be fine, I'm just saying in general pads are nice
>>
>>15508745

>>
>>15508692
So:

Prime in grey to work out problems -> spray with current batch of Tamiya white primer -> wetsand/polish some more -> spray on Mr Surfacer 1500/ or Mr Base White -> polish and wash?
