***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

Nice!

Anyways, might as well repost my question from last thread.
Let's say I wanted to do a white stripe on a piece, would the painting order go as followed?

Prime white - paint white - mask - prime gray - paint other colour?

Also, if I'm painting this white stripe on a black piece, should I prime grey first, or just go straight to white?

**MELEE GROUP BUILD**

Build/paint a robot with a loadout focused on melee combat! Anything from shields to swords to lances to axes to bare fists is fair game. There's no room for ranged weaponry here, however, so anything resembling a rifle, Rocket Launcher, cannon, pistol, or any other ranged weapon is a no-go (Small ranged weapons that are built into the kit itself like head vulcans are ok, however).

More clarification here:
>If the body part has a built-in ranged weapon (head/chest vulcans, claw beams, etc), then that's fine. If it's a separate part like the Alex's arm vulcans it's best to leave those off.
>Melee weapons with in-universe ranged capabilities (Like the Kimaris's lance or the Gyan's shield) are fair game too.
>Any scale and any brand is fair game here, you're not limited to just using Gundams this time around.

White primer on black plastic should be fine. And yeah, the order you have there is fine. You don't really need to prime it again unless the second color you're doing is something really bright, however.

I blame Youtube.

Nearly every gunpla video review grades the articulation of every kit.

Millenials have made gunpla articulation more important than accuracy. They dont care about the original lineart from 30 years ago. They just care about being able to make epic meme poses with their gunpla and putting pics of it on their Instagram.

People forget that along with the increased articulation has comes much better part separation and better detailing which are godsends for painting and modding. People cry about proportions, altered detail, etc but have never dealt with the lumpy soft sculps of the 90s 1/144 or 90's crazily panel detailed 1/100, or the squat sculpts of the 80s with horrendous seams and terrible part separation.

I'll gladly take a small notch on the bicep any day over what we had before. It's not like its hard to change if I don't like it. A lot of these older designs have had a bunch of official reinterpretations over the decades and were never super consistent in the original material anyways.

I feel pretty foolish putting this off. I just have to do the head, arms and shields now, then decals.

The only issue is it looks like the shoulders are split down the center. That's pretty annoying. It looks like I'll have to paint the arms, then attach the shoulders, cement down the seam line, then paint the shoulders. Anyone have any advice for how to cover the painted parts of the arm while I work on the shoulders? I was thinking plastic cling wrap.

>>15472048
Things I like about it: lots of slim thrusters, which is the same reason why I like the alternate Hazels and GP04. Really big gun, which is the same reason why I like the Zeta Plus. Clean color scheme. White, yellow, and navy work really well together.

I also like the unique head shape, although I agree, it does stand out from other UC mobile suits for this reason.

I've used two surface primers. The first is Vallejo Surface primer. It thins easily, is very cost effective for the amount that you get, and comes off with alcohol or thinner if you need to re-prime. The only issue is that it scratches easily until you have a gloss coat over it. It dries almost like a film on top of what's painted, so I wouldn't recommend it if you intend to paint, then sand, then paint again, unless you give it at least 24 hours to dry.

The second is Tamiya primer which I decanted. I'm a huge fan of Tamiya primer, but it's pretty expensive and I find that it is prone to having orange peel (though I was using an older airbrush at the time and it was summer and I was more of a novice, so it could have been my inexperience). You want to be VERY careful, because unless you REALLY thin it down, it dries pretty thick, so you have to be diligent not to clog up details. The advantage is that it dries as hard as a rock (this is true for basically all Tamiya paints) and levels really well. It's also great for priming, then sanding, then priming again.

Those are the two I'd recommend. You also have Mr. Surfacer 1000+. When used by itself, it can act as a liquid putty for seam-filling. When thinned with proprietary thinner, it is about the same as Tamiya primer. I would like this more if it were in a more airbrush-friendly container.

If you don't want to use primer, I think you're best off using Tamiya paint. I've had success painting without priming with Tamiya.
>>
>>15472645
>Vallejo Surface primer
>scratches easily until you have a gloss coat over it.

I just bought some for the first time, and should be painting this weekend. Do I primer > clear coat > paint > clear coat?

Or is a clear coat different from a gloss coat?
>>
>>15471561
Namefags are real gundam fans though, fake fan.
>>
>>15472655
Vellejo paint in general scratches easily until it either dries for several days or it has a gloss coat over it. For example, I'd recommend letting the paint dry about 24 hours before using tape to mask off areas for painting, otherwise you risk pulling the paint up with the tape.

My process is usually: Prime > paint > wait until the next day > brush off any dust with a clean brush > mask, then finish painting > clear coat. Or if it's a piece that doesn't need masking, Prime > paint > clear coat.

I'd highly recommend both the Vallejo airbrush thinner and airbrush flow improver to thin the paint. They're probably the best acrylic airbrush thinner in general.
>>
>>15472680
>clear coat
Were you using a Vallejo brand clear coat? I didn't see one on the website I ordered from.

>airbrush flow improver
How is this different from thinner?
>>
>>15472693
I think the brand names are like "gloss varnish" and "matt varnish".

The flow improver is medium + retarder, which means less tip dry and it dries more flat. The thinner is just thinner, which dilutes the paint, allowing it to be sprayed in thinner coats. I think their airbrush thinner also has retarder in it as well. Regardless, using both gives me the paint consistency I want and they're huge bottles that last a long fucking time.
>>
>>15472711
Thanks for the info. Does the thinner/flow improver come with instructions in English?

I'll have to buy them on Amazon with slow shipping tomorrow. Luckily the groupbuild is on for another month...
>>
>>15472726
You're probably good to go if you just have the thinner, but I like using both. They do have english instructions. According to my bottle right here it says to use 2 drops of thinner per 10 drops of paint. Put the thinner in your airbrush cup before the paint, then use an old brush or toothpick or something to mix the two in the cup.
>>
>>15472195

Just got my Devil Gundam in the mail and was wondering, are there any techniques for adding a bit of weight to models? For purposes such as balancing or just to give it a less flimsy feel.

It's pretty much a given that Bandai'll reprint the kits they already made, but I'm not sure if they'll do new releases. While this type of weathering might look cool at first it makes absolutely no fucking sense. Paint chipping and random grime is babbys first "weathering". If you're going to try weathering a kit at least apply some logic. How did the MS get in this condition? Did it get dinged up in combat? Where are the bullet holes and dents and scorch marks from a bazooka blast?
Just putting paint chipping effects on your model makes it seem like the pilot is some sort of Ace that has never taken damage in a sortie and has never been hit by enemy fire yet for some reason they're a complete fucking spaz and can't launch out of the hangar without scraping the ms against the hangar walls. How else do you explain it.
Use logic and tell a story with your weathering or don't apply any at all

>>15475021
It's the kind of weathering that would reflect no time for a fresh coat of paint as part of the maintenance cycles, which would make sense in a case of constant sortieing or on-the-field maintenance only.

Because wholesale painting a mecha is hard work.

Plus you might be good at avoiding getting hit, but that doesn't make you immune to being blasted by dirt, wind and rain.

Though in the model in question that's the modeler taking liberties, because the pain *is* armor in the IBO setting.

I'm fine with most battle damage and weathering, but holy shit bullet holes never fucking look good. All the Gundam Frames excluding fat Gusion use the same frame pretty much, asides from a few acceptions (Kimaris Trooper's legs, Barbatos Lupus Rex's arms, etc). You can swap armor parts easy with little to no modification. Likewise all the Grazes barring the Reginlazes share a frame too.

As far as parts swapping goes, certain kits are designed to be able to swap parts easily. The easiest example of this is that the Graze's shoulders can be thrown on the Barbatos for 2nd/3rd form.

Ready to do my first gunpla painting, also the first airbrushing.
I try reading the guide and do some researching but can't decide the process. As you can see I all ready gather 3 metallic color: red, yellow, green for the main color scheme. A steel paint for frame and weapons. Surface paint, panel line paint for washing, gloss coat.
I intend to do primmer> paint> panel line > top coat. but don't know how much time I have to wait between each phase, or should I paint the same color twice.
Can't some anon with experience help me?
>>
Oh man, my first attempt at seam welding gonna take a lot of sanding to partially unfuck
>>
>>15477432
Forgot to mention that I already have thinner.
>>
>>15477432
You'll want to do a coat of gloss varnish between the paint and panel line so it flows well and can be cleaned off with enamel thinner without any worries.
I often wait a day between primer and paint, paint and varnish, varnish and panel lines. Just look up the curing time of the paint you're using, my waiting a day is no doubt suboptimal but I work on the balcony so it's a pain when it gets dark anyway.
In terms of doing multiple coats of the same paint, just keep going until it looks the way you want it to is about the best I can give you. I usually paint the parts that need to be the same color in a cycle, so once I get to the last piece the first is dry enough to get another layer.

I'm pretty new at this myself but I haven't fucked up that badly so far so mine can't be the worst tactic imaginable.

That's pretty much what I've done too. I actually plan on lining my first painted kit tomorrow. I let the gloss coat dry for about 3 days so I should be good. I'm not going to do a panel wash though, I'm just going to stick to my Gundam Markers. They look good if you work and do a good job with them. It's kind of a pain but meh. Once lined I'm going to a semi-gloss finish, I want to make it look shiny. Everything's turned out good so far and I'm pretty happy with my first paint job. It's for the group build. Minimal customization since I'm still pretty new and I don't imagine winning with a basic build, but it got me to paint, and it didn't turn out like shit so I'm still going to enter it. I think it'll look good when I'm done though.

so for maximum dakka, you'd need something like
>g-cannon base model

>heavyarms kai quad guntits and pelvis misslepods
>g-cannon dual wrist guns
>handheld gun in each hand (presumably heavyarm's kai twin rotaries)
>hi-mock legs with the side pegholes used for guns (first type guncannon's little rotary ones maybe?)
>hi-mock backpack with build custom arms in the side peg holes, funnels on top
are there machinegun feet? about all I can think of that's missing

Thanks anon. The silver rings on the chest/legs were the hardest. I couldn't just reverse wash because of the non enamel green. So I hand brush all that stuff in. I cant tell you how many times I went past the rings and tried to thin/scrape it off with a tooth pick and lighterfluid. Only to fuck up the whole area and have to strip it and start over. A person can only take so much of that before 'fuckititsgoodenough' syndrome starts to kick in.

Ok, for any color? Because this image I saved has dark green on a slightly lighter green, but then again the pre-shading doesn't show up much, so maybe that's the point. I'm working on a Val Varo, so it'll be red. Would a brown color work well?

Well, shit. Looks like I may not have the right equipment to pre-shade anyway. I've got a Paasche single action, came with an extra nozzle much finer than the other two, thought that's what I had to use to get thinner lines like pic related. But try as I might I couldn't get it to behave any differently than my regular nozzle. IDK what I'm doing wrong, or if it's just something I can't accomplish with the current tools.

Im not sure how the backpack is really suppose to look, theres not many pics i can use to refrence but i think il leave it like this. Im not sure how far i should go with the kit, should i go all out RG style? add tons of panel lines and give it a two tone armor color?
>>
>>15480691
I've only done black on grey so far and it seems to mostly depend on the color you're going to be putting over it. I recently did a dark grey tank and the black preshading is only barely visible, but on an earlier project I sprayed desert yellow on it and it ended up looking a bit too extreme. Let's just say the lighter the final color is supposed to be, the lesser a contrast you should use in your preshading.
>>
>>15480853
set it up inside and just open a window :^)
I feel your pain, I try airbrushing and suddenly we get 40mph wind gusts
>>
>>15480859

Probably helps yo have a double action, but you should be able to get somewhat fine lines by holding the brush closer to the piece.
>>
>>15480618

It's the MG
>>
>>15480908
I did try that on a piece of paper, but found I had trouble controlling the pressure. At close enough range I was still getting too much paint. I'll keep trying though, maybe look up an airbrushing tutorial
>>
>>15480859
It may help too if you get a finer needle for it. That and that nozzle tip should get you the thinner lines you want
>>
>>15480878
