For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

***Graze Group Build***
Rules:
Pick any 1/144 or 1/100 kit from the Graze family (Pic Related), and paint and customize it. As far as customizing it, I'm going to place a limit on that. The limit is 50% additions to the kit.
To define 50%, look at it like this, you could take a Graze Ritter and replace the arms (including shoulders), legs, and backpack and I'd call that 50%. I'm not counting handheld bits in that. If you're unsure of something please ask in IRC, the thread, or email.

Start Date: 12/1/16
Due Date: 3/1/17

Submission format
Please submit photos in jpg via a compressed file (zip, rar, or 7zip), please don't link images to imgur or photobucket or the like. Please also include some WIP photos of the kits being constructed/painted/etc as validation that it's your custom.

Bandai's been making a lot of new plamo for a bunch of different lines in recent years -- the Star Wars and Macross Delta kits display some fantastic engineering and almost certainly eat more resources than IBO's kits built around a handful of shared frames. There's also Derringer's comment about how Bandai feels that it's running out of kits that will consistently enjoy good sales, and not just sell well upon release and bomb afterwards. That more than anything is probably why Bandai's shifting more and more releases to P-Bandai, because if an item only sells well at release why not just sell it directly to the consumers for full MSRP and cut out stores entirely?

I use a Clarke air brush, It works well for me, and is relatively cheap, IIRC.

Do you get your kits off amazon too, by the by? I have so far, I'm not a fan of the nearly one month delivery window.

nothing concrete yet. The problem is finding the proper line art, then I could splice em together and work from there, but the line art site just doesn't get updated too often.
>>
>>15172675
If all you're looking for is making a good color scheme, just pick any lineart that has approximately the same number of parts in the same places. What you're looking for is a pattern of colors that go well together and it's not going to make a super big difference from one model to the next if they're even just a little bit similar.

That's the best part though. The danger turns me on.

Think about it optimistically, once they're put on the edge, they never have to go on it again!

Also have this picture I took at the GnR concert I just got back from
>>
>>15172659
What about compressors etc? Same make?

I do use Amazon for some kits, but only if it's overall cheaper than other sites, but I do hate it sometimes for the delivery windows, last one I ordered was a GN Archer in November and I got it on 15th January, I know Christmas was in the way a bit but it's really annoying how long they make you wait
>>
>>15172626
Some parts are way more detailed than others which makes the whole thing feel kind of unbalanced to me. Maybe panel lining on the chest and shoulders would help, but I'm not sure if it'll be enough.

Started on RG GP00 conversion. Washed the resin, and a tiny part already broke off and needs fixing. Gonna be fun.
>>
>>15173103
I remember when I started building my RG GP-01... and immediately broke one of the legs fiddling around with the frame before attaching the securing armor.

Had to leave it unfinished for months before I finally got around to buying some metal wire, a small enough drill bit, and a hand-held chuck to fit it, so that I could repair the damage.
>>
>>15173109

Is...is that all it does? So those black bits of the huge arms don't pop out into guns, but into shitty sub-arms?

That's one of the laziest gimmicks I've ever seen. It's not even a weapon. It's a thing to "help support my retard-huge mace."

Please tell me there's more than that. Even Thunderbolt at least put extra shields/weapons on the silly sub arms rather than let them be limp little feelers meant to pass shit.

Considering how spindly they are, the guns are more or less vulcans I presume?
That'd be pathetic considering Barbatos Slim once had mortars or cannon.
>>
>>15173250
Same caliber as the previous ones. That's why the arms are so big.
>>
when you order kit just to get specific parts (ex: legs, weapons..) to kit bash with other kit. What do you do with the rest of the kit?
Just curious, since I intended to do my first big kit bash and painting. I want to swap the feet of zudah with gyan revive and give zudah the beam rapier. The color would be white and gold to resemble royal guard. This would leave the gyan revive with no feet. I know some people would leave the incomplete model in their box or scavenge it further, but are there another way?
>>
>>15173264
Then where do they go? Are they just not showing us the barrel pop-out accessories?
>>
>>15173272
There are websites that sell individual parts. You can always look there and see if they have the kit you need already gutted and if they still have the part you need. I actually just broke the peg the beam saber plugs into on my Origin RX-78. Peg snapped right off when it fell over and now is stuck in the beam saber handle. Tried to get it out to no avail. I may try fixing it with metal wire and a small drill but I dunno if I can find stuff small enough to work on the part. I may just have to replace the saber handle as well as the port it plugs into on the backpack. Hopefully I can fins a site that has the parts I need.
>>
>>15173272
That's the nature of kitbash. You eventually end up with a box of useless and/or ugly crap. You just save the bitz and root through them later for other kitbashes in the future, such as just breaking them down for cannibalization (such as aesthetically pre-molded armor panels if you can cut it away from whatever body part it used to be attached to).

I have two Barbatos bodies I just ignore completely because I hate the "floating" upper body that I don't know what to do with, but I was able to re-use the nice legs.

I've seen general advice be, "stick it in boiling water"

iirc, the closer the resin is to being white the better quality it is (assuming they didn't stick in it white dyes?). But the grainyness of the resin is still something to be wary off.

But yeah, this thing is pretty damn big. Quick rundown on Pros/Cons

+It's a Final Battle Harute, what more could you ask for
+All the Scissor Fangs have storage space in the kit
+Color separation is a bit better than on the original kit (The red cockpit is a plastic part here while on the Bandai kit it's a foil sticker)
+The top half is pretty much a more detailed HG Harute with more features (3 pairs of hands, Storage compartments on the back cannons, more detailed/color accurate Scissor Rifles)

-Polycaps on the legs vary from too tight (The balljoints for the hips) or too loose (The piece connecting the hips to the legs.
-Aforementioned weak legs make the transformation a pain to pull off.
-Head is a bit awkward looking up close, needs some work.
-Hey Hobby Star where the fuck were the stickers?

Still a good kit IMO. All the problems mentioned can be fixed with a bit of modding (Other than the missing decals)

Get a cotton swab, dab some water over the decal, and wait. It takes longer, but you have more control over the moisture and there's much lower chances to oversoak.

Ordered my first model in like 8 years yesterday. Also getting above nippers and sandpaper not shown (tamiya brand, with like 1000 and 2000 grit with some in betweens).

To think, back in the day, I would just rip the parts out of the runners by hand, slap them on, and call it done *shudders*

Im gonna treat this bad boy right, though. Prolly wont paint except for line details, but those nubs are good as gone. Now to wait until Tuesday...

You mean the one in MA mode nose? No, it's always separate clear part. I know because I remember painting mine with Tamiya clear red spray paint.
However it's molded in clear part not clear red so Bandai provided foil sticker to put on below the clear part (if you don't paint it like I did).

Is this the thread where we talk about these model kits?

Started watching Gundam (1978) a week ago. I'm in love and have no idea why I never got into japanese mecha before. It's always been wastern stuff for me.

So, I picked this up at the mall today.

Holy shit, I was not prepared when I opened the box, but boy and I excited.

I always had an obsession with mecha, but like I said, only western stuff. Mech Warrior, Battlefield 2142. The bulky walker types. A friend of mine made pic related to make fun of me over it, ha. We actually got into an argument/debate once. I said that, if any sort of mecha program were to be approved, it couldn't possibly be a fast and nible bi-pedal mecha because it would just rip itself apart. (I forgot the term for it. I used to know it though) That asshat actually called up Brookhaven Labs and asked to speak with a structural engineer and literally asked the engineer what he thought was more likely. The engineer went with my friend's side, citing new materials that are theoretically possible to produce and can withstand that kind of strain.

Anyway, I came across some free time these past two weeks, so I just figured I'd give Gundam a try. I like older anime too, so why not? I'm also no stranger to buying figures. Mostly 80s X-Men stuff, and some statue shit. Most expensive piece of plastic I got is a Metal Gear REX replica from Metal Gear made by 3A, so this for $50 didnt seem too bad

I also used to build car models when I was little. The kind where you have to assemble the engine with glue, so why not give that a go again?

HG Hyakuri?
>>

Altron, Heavyarms, or Barbatos, since those are the only Gundams on that list.
>>

Technology in the future could make those robots, but Square Cube law makes it a bitch with what exists now. That said, your friend and the Boston Dynamics are idiots cause that won't happen til we are long dead.

It's good you're getting into this. You'll enjoy the ride for the most part, you'll have hiccups like ZZ and CCA, but overall I don't ever look back. If you enjoy that kit, get a Sazabi Ver Ka.

Also good tastes anon, Battlemech, 2142, Rex. Good on you. And don't worry about sperging out. You'll find the majority of us are accepting of those who like our hobbies. Just don't be a Snapfag like Snapfag here.

The dollar-to-plastic value you get with Gunpla is the real hook. I can't buy normal Transformers anymore, they're so inarticulate and stiff, you're basically just paying extra for the transformation gimmick. Hell the last one I bought was $60, but a Graze I bought for $13 is immensely more poseable, and a similarly priced MG completely blows it out of the water.

/minirant
>>
>>15175333
Too true. I personally think the worst offenders are the Macross kits. The Valkyries are nice minus sticker hell, but the Destroids are a fucking joke.

>>15175333
I'm cautious about Transformers. I keep seeing a $150 transformers at Toys R Us.

I never caught the original show except for a few episodes, but I started playing the Transformers game made by Platinum that is based of the 80s cartoon and holy shit it's awesome. Makes me want to watch it.

However, I know I'd end up buying the Transformers figures, then I'll delve into the ones that transform into things like a Sega Genesis and shit. Slippery slope, man.

But as far as articulation goes, it doesn't bother me too much, yet... I can tolerate statue shit, so
>>
>>15175333
For Transformers and other toys on the shelves, you're paying for the labor cost.
>>
>>15175296
Tallgeese III, Altron and Heavyarms Kai are all P-Bandai so you're going to be paying rape prices especially outside of Japan. Even in Japan you'll be lucky to find Altron for under 100 dollars. You need to get the P-Bandai stuff early or wait until its re-released.

That said, I have Altron and Tallgeese II and they were both fun builds.
>>
>>15175378
>Tallgeese III, Altron and Heavyarms Kai are all P-Bandai so you're going to be paying rape prices especially outside of Japan
I already own all of them.

I used a proxy for most of them, and Bigbadtoystore for others.
I wind up paying about the same either way, though BBTS will occasionally have the better deal. That I don't have to pay up-front is also a plus with them.
>>
>>15175311
>That said, your friend and the Boston Dynamics are idiots cause that won't happen til we are long dead.
Well, it has to start somewhere.
If everybody were to refrain from thinking about some currently impossible sci-fi tech because "we're not even close to getting there yet" well, we'd never go forward and eventually get there at all.
>>
>>15175357
The $150 one is probably a Masterpiece, which are more in tune with Master Grade quality. I agree on the game too, and they chose characters that already had MP releases if you want to start digging that hole. But I do have a bunch of TFs that I still mess with, but unfortunately the Gunpla has won out on shelf space.
>>15175372
I forgot about this, I guess Gunpla would cost similar to RDamashiis if they came prebuilt, MGs moreso.

The slippery slope for Transformers goes well beyond that.

First you start out with the little $10-$50 ones. But then you start getting into the big ticket collectibles, like that Fortress Maximus, or the Masterpiece line that go for $100-200.
And THEN you start wanting to get into the really pricey 3rd Party stuff...

I don't see the need for that piece to be separated though. Bandai gave that part foil sticker to give illusion that clear part above it is clear red instead of just clear. I didn't put any sticker or paint below the clear part (that I painted clear) and still looks good.
But I guess that isn't the most important part, those Final Battle parts and Marute face look neat.

>>
>>15175589
I live in Japan. Just saying its weird to make Wing kits P-Bandai since most of their fans live in the west where its impossible to buy direct.
And also, the prices of P-Bandai kits are technically the same or similar, but the price goes up dramatically since they only release them online and in much smaller quantities.

>>15175586

I fucked up on one of the red zig zags on the leg and bought this set. I thought I might have to replace the other three, but actually the quality was good enough that you can't tell which one is the knock off.

Also in the Bandai kit you are only supposed to put decals on one side of the fangs, and I wanted them on both sides.

If you ever decide to do this, you MUST have a gloss coat on the kit first. Enamel thinner will make gunpla plastic extremely brittle.

So has anyone here bought either the Chinese FPM Hobby or Innovator brand MG Avalanche Exia conversion kit? They were released a couple of weeks back, but I haven't seen any reviews yet. I really want to know which one has the better molding and plastic quality so I can decide which one to buy.
>>

>>15178823
A few of us here has bought the FPM RG Exia R3 conversion. For third party plastic it's alright. Comes with 2 sets of the gun and sword. Water decals included. May need some pegs and holes attention and cementing at a place or two, but nothing majorly bad. For the low price it was definitely worth the get. Plastic quality is okay, not amazing. Will need sand and topcoat at the very least to get the surface looking closer to OOB plastic.

There's a shop in Tokyo that sells them and parts.

I wouldn't mind picking on up and maybe gutting it, but weirdly they sell them for more than an unboxed kit. And most of the time they aren't painted or detailed they are just put together but sold for more. That's some bad quality control. Bootleg?

That said, get some hot, read not boiling, water, and submerged it in it and work it slowly back to being straight.
>>
>>15180742
Yeah it's the BTF ZZ. It's decently straight now, if you don't look too close. Hopefully that's the worst of it.
>>
>>15180747
What made you buy bootleg? I'm not above doing it myself since I put effort into them, and in my country of Chewbaccastan, licensed shit is expensive as fuck. A GM Command is 39 dollars.
>>
>>15180796
It's not necessarily a bootleg, it's a unique design by somebody not Bandai. I liked how it looked compared to the old MG ZZ, and it isn't hindered by a transformation gimmick. I ordered it before I heard of the incoming Ver Ka, and I'm only now getting around to building it.

My Reginlaze and Schwalbe Graze came in today. A day earlier than I expected. Hopefully the Graze Custom comes in earlier than the expected date as well, otherwise I may not have time to finish my groupbuild project.

Which of the three tools work best for those of you that have used all three? Do they all work with the q-tip and eraser trick? Trying to decide which to get. Also, can you do the panel lines on eyes instead of the stickers?
>>
>>15181209
Anon, why don't you have a seat in the corner and think about what you've done?
>>
>>15181209
I've found that sandblasters work wonders for cleaning nubs, bead blasters with ball bearings even more so. The q-tip and eraser trick doesn't work so well with this method, but iron filings are great for filling in eyes instead of stickers.

Of course, this IS assuming that's what you're talking about.

>wowza...those paint apps could definitely be cleaner
Yeah, I rushed them too much, any tips for cleaning off the excess that isn't stripping all the paint entirely?
>>
>>15182751
paint and erase the excess with rubbing alcohol

unless you're really good at masking, it's gonna be something like

>paint
>erase
>repaint
>re-erase
>etc
>etc

until it looks passable
>>
>>15182754
>paint and erase the excess with rubbing alcohol
Use a Rubber Eraser with the alcohol, and will that still work after the paint has dried?

What makes this metallic such a pain in ass is that it has some kind of flake or leveling agent in it that makes it gunk up brushes like nobodies business.
I literally have to keep rinsing them in Simple Green just to keep the stuff out, and it leaves behind some weird residue wherever the brush was dabbed in the cup.
>>
>>15182767
when i said erase, i meant use alcohol on a qtip

you're gonna go through a lot of qtips

i don't paint with brushes, just gundam marker. they're inexpensive and worth looking into
>>
>>15182787
>when i said erase, i meant use alcohol on a qtip
>you're gonna go through a lot of qtips
If that's the case, I don't think cotton swabs are going to be stiff enough...
Like I said, this silver has some kinda gunk that just makes it cling to shit, so I might just up and use ultra fine steel wool.

>i don't paint with brushes, just gundam marker. they're inexpensive and worth looking into
Well that's kinda what I'm using; Elmers' Painters brand Acrylic Paint Markers.
I like them because their sorta like Gundam Markers, but unfortunately the tips on a lot of them can be way too thick for fine details, hence I pool them out to brush with.
