***READ THE GUIDE***

*** THERE IS NO "GUNPLA GENERAL" DISCORD SERVER. IGNORE THE TRIPFAG THAT SAYS OTHERWISE. THERE IS ONLY A TEXT CHANNEL ON THE /m/ DISCORD: https://discord.gg/TGjVRAG ***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

***Graze Group Build***
Rules:
Pick any 1/144 or 1/100 kit from the Graze family (Pic Related), and paint and customize it. As far as customizing it, I'm going to place a limit on that. The limit is 50% additions to the kit.
To define 50%, look at it like this, you could take a Graze Ritter and replace the arms (including shoulders), legs, and backpack and I'd call that 50%. I'm not counting handheld bits in that. If you're unsure of something please ask in IRC, the thread, or email.

Start Date: 12/1/16
Due Date: 2/1/17 [tentative]
Submissions go to
[email protected]
Submission format
Please submit photos in jpg via a compressed file (zip, rar, or 7zip), please don't link images to imgur or photobucket or the like. Please also include some WIP photos of the kits being constructed/painted/etc as validation that it's your custom.

Why is 1/144 scale so popular? 144 seems arbitrary
>>
>>15092595

Relatively inexpensive and least space consuming
>>

Less expensive, easier to build

for me, I prefer MG

just a preference thing
>>
>>15092599
Checked
>>
>>15092595
Cheaper, less space consuming, less time involving to build and paint so you don't burn out as easily, wider variety, and more regular releases every month.
>>
>>15092613
>>15092603
>>15092599
But why 144 of all numbers?
>>
>>15092653
It's the same scale as model trains, isn't it?
>>
>>15092700

Nope.

The popular model train scales HO and N are 1/87 and 1/150 respectively.
>>
>>15092653
There are quite a few military models in 1/144 scale. But more importantly the scale doesn't really matter much at all. It's hitting the 5" target, so most 1/144 kits are in the same size range with many action figure.

It's perfect for kids who also have Sentai and Marvel figures and what not.

because when Bandai first started making GunPla, they were doing it to be in scale with 1/144 military craft.
>>
>>15092595

All scales are arbitrary
>>
>>15092946
All things are arbitrary. In the end, there is no you, and there is no me. What we define as self is limited by our basic perceptions. What we define as scale is based on our limited perceptions. Ergo, there is no scale; and there is no person. I cannot see you and you cannot see me. Based on the facts I know, you do not exist as any more than text on a screen. And based on what I can percieve with my limited senses, a gunpla does seem to be 1/144 scale. But what I percieve as 1/144 scale, many others may percieve differently. I cannot know this, because I am only one. In the infinite permutations of this exact reality there may be any number of scales, each more improbable than the last. Yet the probability does not matter in the end, because it is one of an infinite number of permutations. 1/144 scale may be the scale of this universe, but think about that. 144 is divisible by 12, 6, and 2. The probability that our universe produced such a number as it's scale should be infinitesimally small. Yet, this logic is flawed. The number itself makes sense because it is divisible by 12, 6, and 2. Therefore, in the end, a vast majority of universes contain a 1/144 scale. But again, this does not matter. All measurements are arbitrary. Whilst 1/144 may be a common scale among universes, the actual comparative sizes of the models are most likely vastly different. But, because the measurements we use today are made on things that make sense, we can narrow down the vast amount of universes that use 1/144 scale to the ones that use 1/144 scale with the same measurement system. Using this line of logic, we can pinpoint the various reasons that 1/144 scale is used in our universe, with the following reasons being why: 1. Military scale models are 1/144 because that is the sweet spot where they can mold detail and use the least plastic. 2. 1/144 happened to be closest to the size that the original gundam toys were in, so thats where they made their scale.

So I'm not sure what the technique is called, but when certain kits have the area around the panel lines darkened as well, is something I may consider trying on my next kit, but every kits I've seen it on has been glossy and/or metallic. Does it not look good with a matte finish?

Have a couple questions about primer.
When do you tend to primer? I've only done it if I need to cover up putty or drastically change the color of a part, but if the part is already the desired color I've just painted on the part itself. But I've seen some people prime everything, how come?
Also when I do use it, I use the Tamiya spray can, but what's better, grey or white?
>>
>>15093237

Priming everything and painting stuff, even stuff that's already the same color you want, helps maintain an even look. You don't have to, but it's just another level.
>>
>>15093237

You always want to prime your parts as paint will stick to the surface a lot better. Primer can also contrast your colors, as a black primer base will make your colors darker.

I have one, the backpack is solid but the shield is awful for staying on and the arm isn't strong enough to hold it up with any of it's weapons installed and is weak even if it's just the bare shield.

It's a beautiful kit but the legs are abnormally long compared to the regular length arms and it does not balance well without a stand.

When I was a kid I remember playing with some family friends gundam kit/toy, for a while now i've thought it was a master grade talgees 3 because I remember it being white and blue and having that whip thing (havent seen wing yet) I think it was 1/100 but maybe not. Well there's the old 1/100 HG but if it was a young kid's figure there's a good chance it was the MSIA DX Tallgeese III action figure, it was also 1/100 scale and was released in the west under the "Arch Enemies" banner in an assortment with a Wing Zero Custom.
>>
>>15094178

After checking it out, I think it was the HG and I honestly remember it being painted too, I was probably 6 or 7 so I don't remember the details but I remember thinking it was way nicer than any toys I had. I'm guessing it was my much older cousin's but again I don't really remember. thanks for the help, now I have an alternative to the P-bandai MG
>>
>>15094239
Are you sure it was an actual model kit and not one of the numerous action figures that got released in the US during the brief Gundam boom?
>>
>>15094156
It's gjallarhorns next generation of grunt meant to replace the graze because with everyone starting to use MS again they needed a stronger ms that specializes in ms to ms combat compared to the graze which was just "good enough" for the peace era where they mostly fought mw and old junk. Arianrhod just got the first batch of them because they're the most active fleet in the most high conflict areas.
>>
>>15094240

could be but watching a review of the HG 1/100 I remember the articulation just like in the video and also I remember I kept breaking pieces off
>>
Here's something maybe you guys can help me out with.

When I was in like highschool and started collecting Gundam stuff, my parents found me this huge figure of the GP01-Fb Gundam "Zephyranthes" Full Burnern while they were out shopping one day.
I remember it being something like two feet tall, but anything similar I can find for gundam figures is just the Jumbo RX-78, and it was definitely a figure and not a model kit.

Now I've since moved away for college then after graduating moved to a whole different country for a job, but I think it's somewhere in storage in their house. I've never been able to find anything about it online anywhere, though.

Started on the Heine Destiny. You'll have to do a shitload of sanding since almost all of the major joints are too tight, plus the orange plastic is a bitch to clean due to the different finish that it has.

On the upside the plastic is very easy to cut and sand, and the build design is very good.

looking really good. When you say the pipes, do you mean all the random stuff in the body? That must have been a pain in the ass to panel line. Star wars models always amuse me because in a making of documentary they talk about how most of their ships and space sets were all a bunch of cannibalized model parts. It makes me wonder what all kits they actually used.
>>
>>15094392
I never understood the point of clear kits. Like maybe if you do a half and half of normal/clear. Like paint up parts of the frame really nice just to show it off. Or maybe for like, a spreadsheet/blueprint diagram or something. But just clear all by its self actually makes the whole kit look super cheap imo.
>>
>>15094869
>and the build design is very good.

no it's not. They didn't change the sections that were shaped for diecast parts into something that cheappo plastic could handle so you have tiny ass plastic sections like the chest connection to the waist. Waist is going to break from leaning the chest forward or backward too far..
>>
>>15094706
it looks exactly like the lineart, no ball was dropped
>>
>>15095141

yeah this is my problem with clear kits, 90% of the detail that goes into the kit is the external surface and frame, and the underside of armor pieces are designed to fit those and not be seen. When you make the armor clear you just see how much of a toy it all is
>>
>>15095149
Actually. Now that you mentioned it the connection from the upper body to the waist is kinda bad. Seems like this was meant to be a brick from the start...

The Cherno was the best of the Jaeger figures when it came out and is still one of the better ones in terms of articulation. It's about the point in the line where the line stopped being total dogshit and could actually pose worth a damn. The Gipsy, Crimson, and especially the Striker were terrible. Striker had really awful plastic for the joints that broke over time and was basically a brick.

The rest after the Cherno are a mixed bag with Romeo being my favorite of the line. The Kaiju figures got pretty cool as well after that first awful knifehead.

Noob here, has anyone bought from Banzai Hobby? Are they any good?
>>
>>15097179
yeah I use them all the time, best if you buy in bulk though.
>>
>>15097183
Is it because the shipping is expensive or do they ship SAL?

I just got off a stint of waiting 2 months on SAL. I'm not sure I can do it again so soon.
>>
>>15097191
yeah, anything other than SAL is pretty expensive but it's less weighty in your wallet if you buy in bulk since it's all in the one box.
>>
>>15097195
I'm kind of hesitant to order in bulk and risk my order getting lost in SAL transport.

What do you do whenever you feel like procrastinating on a build?

After a week long break I still don't feel like finishing my current kit
>>
>>15097547

I build something else. Like snapping together an HG.

Neither. It's the ZIEGLER, based on the Perfect Zeong of course due to the lack of shoulder binders and stomach cannon.

It must be nice seeing $320+ as affordable.
It sucks being a broke college student. Every time I buy a new kit, it comes at the cost of having one less meal every day for the rest of the week or something.
