I don't think it stands toe to toe with some of the greats that came out of that decade, but it does just enough to not be completely forgettable. Most notably it doubles down on being fucking weird in lieu of it's original vision of being dark. M8s, I think there's a double error here. Gigaman and GoGo V still used chroma + analog video instead of CG. The major difference here is the QUALITY/smoothness of the effect: pretty more natural than chroma from the 80's (pic related). However, it's still chroma scenes filmed in parts inside an analog media, cutting the film itself. Even TimeRanger, the last "old" sentai didn't use it CG.

Truly official CG only in digital video - and technically speaking, only with modern sentai: GaoRanger.

Guys I had a weird dream last night about Kyuuranger. I dreamed that I was at some meet and greet early reveal, and that the whole show was meant to be like super 80's style. All the team members wore really funky space clothes like in Gingaman, the mech was really blocky but done all in practical effects with no cg, and they even filmed it with older cameras specifically to make it look like a Sentai from the 80's.
