AGE is such a huge disappointment, because it had some cool ideas, but pissed them away with poor execution.

That said, the big problem with Zeheart was that his massive guilt complex/need to make all the deaths worth something wasn't that well established in the show, and it REALLY looked like he got brainwashed by Ezelcant, because the better solution was to try to negotiate a cease fire, then work something out where Martians could go to Earth without killing people. This, by the way, would've made sense and at least made the show slightly better, even if Zeheart wound up getting stabbed in the back by his own dudes who want the war to go on.

Since day one Zeheart prided himself for his warriorsu dedication to winning Eden for Vagan. Ezelcant didn't even lie that much to him, since his true plan was Vagan dominance after devastating war with somebody like Zeheart in spiritual leader position. He just didn't say about not wanting to win too soon.

Not to mention, Zeheart made a pragmatic choice regardless. Madman peacefully transferred the power to him, and they didn't have to went through succession crisis when they were right in the middle of enemy territory.

There's a lot, but here's a basic one that really bothers me:

Kira Yamato is who everyone's complained about for years as being someone who doesn't kill his enemies, being so much better than them that he can disable dozens of enemies with one salvo of stock footage. Despite this, Kira does have times when he's willing to kill, at least in SEED. If he's fighting an opponent that puts any significant pressure on him, like the three Extended or like Rau, or if he's fighting against a battleship that he has no practical means of disabling, he'll kill them without hesitation. His allies do not follow his example and continue to go for killshots, and he never brings this up as a point of contention or argues the moral superiority of his nonlethal preferences, because the lives of himself and his allies come before those of his enemies even if he would rather avoid killing needlessly.

Kio, in contrast, doesn't just use his swords to disable enemy mobile suits. He actually uses them to block shots that his allies are firing that would be killshots against enemy Vegan suits. He does not use them to block shots that the Vegans are taking at his allies, several of whom die as a result. In other words he places the lives of the Vegans over the lives of his own friends and family, becoming an active hindrance to his own team.

And then all of a sudden, Kio takes a trip to the Vagan home world and we see a super-sympathetic view of them, enough that Kio is convinced otherwise.

The viewer has been with Flit from the beginning, they've seen all the crap that the Vagans did, to the point that exterminating them back seems not only reasonable, but desirable. They're not going to let it go because of one little cancer patient, or because Kira Jr. says they should. Fuck it, kill em' all, they certainly deserve it.

Oh Luna's shit aim was definately at fault for Djibril getting away. The problem people had with Lacus/Kira/Cagali is how they just derp around aimlessly before ZAFT takes a crack at ORB. They just drift around taking potshots at

AGE has issues, yeah, but the big one and the only one that I feel is unique to AGE is that they tried to fit too much plot into too little time, there's not enough fleshing out. And I actually quite like AGE's mechanical design. The Mobile Suits have an organic quality to them, and not just the Vagan Suits, character design is shit, it's that same colorful, big-eyed, soft-lined look that was trendy like ten years ago, light on details and shading.

I hated characters's moe design.

Season 1 has some badass moments and some of my favorite characters and has a kind of light-hearted tone at times.
Season 2 is my favorite, Asemu does a lot of growing and is just a talented pilot and not some super space psychic (Not hating on newtypes ect just nice to see a main character who isnt one)
Season 3 is the weakest of the bunch but not the worst thing ever. It feels like a rush to end the series and a lot of characters added in a short period of time.
Overall I liked the non vegan suits in the series, genoace and g-bouncer were pretty cool and basic. I was not a fan of the vegan ms at all. The whole dragon ms just wasn't with my taste but that just made it more satisfying when they died.
The series is decent, def worth a watch but after you finish it I recommend watching the movie Mobile Suit Gundam AGE: Memory of Eden. It focuses on 2 of the characters stories and adds some better fight scenes.

Gen 2 is easily the worst fucking part of the show, though. Yeah, yeah, muh Oldtype pilot, but the entire arc is useless. It means nothing. It does nothing. Nothing happens in Gen 2 that means anything to any of what happens afterward. In a show that's already going to be strained for time because of its structure, Gen 2 wastes about sixteen fucking episodes on events that are completely pointless with characters who for the most part we will never see again. And even within those sixteen episodes of filler, it wastes a bunch on the high school shit that's filler for the filler.

It gave us AGE-2's spiffy theme and the gorgeous Double Bullet, but everything else about Gen 2 is a useless waste of space.

Don't rely on TV Tropes for actual news/content. AGE didn't come close to killing the franchise; Unicorn was going strong, and The Origin OVAs and G-Reco were already in production during AGE's 49 episode run. It was commissioned by Bandai and the story and characters were developed by Level-5 (a videogame company). It was never meant to be anything more than a means to sell Gundam Products (games, gunpla, apps) and keep the 00 Production Staff around while they planned the next major installment in the series (G-Reco) after 00. The reason AGE was cut down from the originally planned 76 episodes is because Sunrise needed to re-allocate their budget when Unicorn's final OVA was split into 2 episodes due to the sheer amount of content in the Unicorn Novels; AGE's story was planned out well enough that they could chop off 25-26 episodes dedicated to all 3 antagonists and tie it in with Kio's arc. Despite the poor reception, AGE was a production success considering they were able to keep a smooth ending despite the large production changes something Destiny, even with a dedicated budget, couldn't do.

I'm pretty sure 76 episodes was only ever Hino's wish, and it was planned as 50 from the beginning of production because that wish was denied before production began. It basically had to be, because TV companies sell the blocks well ahead of time so that they can allocate for future seasons as well as possible. Deciding the length of a show is also one of the earliest production decisions made, since so.much else is dictated by that.

Also, I don't think a production's success has ever been solely decided by whether it came in under budget or not. It might contribute, but I doubt any media's success has ever been riding on that one factor.

People hate Kio because his arc in the story was poorly handled.

He starts out as a kid brainwashed by his bitter granddad into fighting the antagonists of the show. Admittedly up until that point the antagonists have been nothing but a bunch of genociding fanatics, the only notable exception now spearheading bombardments of peaceful towns. Granddad in particular lost his home colony, his mother, his second home colony, his childhood crush, his mentor and his most precious comrade to them so he honestly has no reason to consider them sympathetic in the slightest.

Fastforward a bit into the story and Kio is captured by the antagonists. Inside their colony he meets a little girl dying from space cancer, which completely 180s his worldview. He allows the antagonists access to the Gundam's data in trade for space cancer medicine. The antagonists use this data to make their own Gundam. The little girl dies anyway 10 minutes later.

Now fastforward to the final battle, where Kio got his Nu Gundam. He is shown protecting enemies from the shots of his allies, but is never shown to extend this courtesy to his own comrades. All of the pilots in his squad die. Kio gives them barely any second thought. Just a bit later he flies into a wild berserker rage when an enemy commander kills cancer girl's brother, who joined the antagonist army to kill him. The series ends with the antagonists attaching a superweapon to their colony which goes haywire. Kio, having been witness to endless acts of genocide, petty evil enemy commanders and general chaotic stupidity talks his granddad into helping to save the antagonists from their own stupidity.

Bottom line here is, from the start of the series we knew it was not going to end with the antagonists getting wiped out. However the actual turning point to pacifist end was handled in such a hamfisted way during Kio's arc that the kid ate the brunt of the hate. The general bad writing for the final bit of the series didn't help.

I'll have to agree with just about everyone here that says the show is painfully mediocre. I really feel that it didn't take any chances whatsoever. The characters were complete knockoffs of ones from other Gundam series as well, thus making it easy to tell who was going to die. This might be a spoiler, actually, but one of the biggest things that really ferments my cheese is that they ripped the plot wholesale off of Martian Successor Nadesico. If it wasn't such a blatant theft of the entire plot I wouldn't care, but it really is like someone watched Nadesico and was like, "Hey, this show's from 1997 so no one remembers it. Let's just steal everything from it and rewrite it with Gundams!" But I will say I love the UE mech design. It gets progressively more unique and is really the only thing iconic about AGE.

I can definitely say that the AGE females are the worst in the entire Gundam universe, especially the wives of the protagonists. They essentially exist to give birth to the next protagonist. They're not really. Cartoon is a general term, including animations of all kinds but not limited to it, since it can also indicate strips in a newspaper (or online) - though it's not used to indicate that as much these days. Anime is just a nation specific term for Japanese animation. And even that's changing, since it tends to be used to describe all Asian animation in general media.
