I couldn't even make it past episode 24 because of the direction and how mediocre the art, mecha and characters were. I don't know anything about how it ends. But I didn't find anything special about the direction, if anything it played things too safe and was too cliche and cookie cutter to be interesting. I felt like it was made with all the typical anime conventions in mind as opposed to breaking boundaries and setting new trends like what the old Tomino works did.

Zeta has great directing because it seems monotonous on the surface, but it is extremely dense and nuanced in all the little details that subtly develop over time. Shows like AGE lack that richness and the oppressive and desperate atmosphere that Zeta creates
with the way it structures its arcs, because everything is too out in the open and generically structured to make that unique kind of impact that Zeta had.

It's pretty hard to tell the difference between someone posting an honest opinion that's so far from your own that you can't understand why they feel that way, and someone just posting what they know will get a reaction out of people. People see Zeta hate as trolling instead of legit minority opinions just because polls of /m/ show Zeta ranked very highly, though that doesn't actually mean that there can't be people who legitimately hated it. Similarly, people see praise of AGE as trolling because the general consensus is that it shit the bed pretty hard in the third arc so it's hard for people to understand why someone would like it.

Personally, I liked AGE but I did think Zeta was considerably better. But as I've just explained, now that I've stated that I like AGE my entire post will be dismissed as trolling.

But almost every time someone tries to bring up flaws with Zeta they end up citing things that don't match up with what actually happened in the show. It is one thing to not enjoy Zeta, that is totally fair, but when the majority of the critiques are based on objectively false statements about the show then it is hard to take them seriously. Obviously there is an element of subjectivity in all of this, but when someone says " Zeta is bad because x happened" or "Zeta is bad because Y didn't happen" and X never happened but Y did, then what else can you do but point out that those people are wrong?

No one will ever recommend you to watch the Zeta movies over the series, yet people do recommend the MSG movies over the series. You want to know why? That's because when you try to compress a series with a narrative as messy as Zeta's, you end up with 3 movies of incomprehensible sleep inducing scenes.

As someone who watched AGE along /m/ during its 2011 run, I can legit conclude that AGE was indeed better than Zeta.

There's nothing in Zeta that makes it better than AGE. NOTHING.
