***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

Weathering tips?

I've built a lot of kits but haven't done weathering on any.

Really wanna make my Zaku II MG look like it's been through some shit

I read up a bit on gunk washing it, seems like the simplest way
>>
>>14959128
Any advice on scratchbuilding? I'd like to start with the barrel of a long blade rifle, which seems like a fairly simple shape to start with.

Well I figured a new thread is the best time to call the results for the next Groupbuild, and looks like with 33% of the vote we're building Grazes this winter.

As for the rules, I'm just copy the rulings for /toy/'s GM Groupbuild with GM replaced with Graze

>Pick an kit from the Graze family (Pic Related), and paint and customize it. As far as customizing it, I’m going to place a limit on that. The limit is 50% additions to the kit.
To define 50%, look at it like this, you could take a Graze Ritter and replace the arms (including shoulders), legs, and backpack and I’d call that 50%. I’m not counting handheld bits in that. If you’re unsure of something please ask in IRC, the thread, or email.

Basically while most of the kit has to be a Graze as a base, you can add RX-78-2 arms or Barbatos Legs or a WZC backpack and it'll be fine.

I mean if you really want to throw away $10 by buying a kit and then throwing it in the bin, then by all means go for it, It's your money.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that this starts right on the first, so this gives you about a week for preptime to get kits/paints/supplies for you guys. There were some of you guys who said that they ran out of time or just didn't have time to go get everything they needed, so a week of reprieve before we start instead of after we start will hopefully do you guys some good.
>>
>>14959189
Grimgerde counts right?

Since Grimgerde served as a base for the Graze.
>>
Explain to me why the Coon brothers hate Grazes so badly.
>>
>>14959239
I honestly don't see why not, since I'm including the Geirail for the same reason of being a predecessor to the Graze. Grimgerdes are fair game.

If you want to, sure. The only reason why I could imagine someone wanting to work on the 1/100 is for the ground type feet.
>>
>>14959378

People who use 1/100's will have an advantage because generally speaking, the larger a kit is, the easier it is to make it look good. This is why so many people build 1/100 for contests etc.

>>
>>14959196

>>14959036

You could have just gotten tamiya panel wash, but basically you want the paint pretty watery. Grab a piece you don't care about, or carve some lines into a runner, pour some enamel thinner into a container and add a bit of paint. Test out the mixture until you get a solid colour that flows well.

As a side note, a coat of future can also help with flow and protects the plastic/paint underneath

The original concept people were suggesting was "Graze-off", which to me sounded like a Graze-themed build. If it was just the regular S1 Graze everyone was working on it'd be a little more boring, and allowing the Graze Ein/Grimgerde/Regingraze/Geirail opens up more possibilities for what you guys can work with. Meanwhile allowing the Kimarises (Kimari?) and the Vidar opens up another can of worms which would snowball into allowing the rest of the Gundam Frames.

I'm not saying you can't use Kimaris parts or anything, a kitbash between the Ritter and Kimaris Trooper would look pretty rad IMO.

>>14959991
Like that other guy said, the Geirail reuses the same frame as the regular Graze (The D-Frame in pic related). Even the Graze Ein reuses some parts from it, the only kits that don't are the Grimgerde and the Regingraze.

>>14960121

It makes sense though, it already was leading in tech that was more widely used by zeta era so if it is the Alex It just needs replacement parts for what was destroyed, modified reactor for output and increased speed but pretty much kills the theory of what happened to alex in the katana series. I doubt its to Nu or even zeta/zz potential but I bet for the time line its in it kicks some heads in. I havent seen what happens to it in katana so they could even pull from that as the titans found it in storage and fixed it.

The way I see it is a literal straight line up until the graze then it breaks off into a tree.

Basically rx-78-1 -> rx-78-2 -> gm family as it breaks off to the type e and ground type before taking all three suits data to make a standard gm we know of. Then its variants such as sniper, or its successor such as gm II, Nemo, Gm III, Jegan etc etc. But because the full armor gundams data had nothing to do with the type e or ground type its ineligible as its more of the gundams tree. But youll have people argue its still in the tree blah blah blah.

Its an odd feeling, a Char Red zaku 3 that could have been Chars before upgrading to the Doga Quess I think it was piloted? Then upgraded to sazabi. Then you have the machine that was meant to go to Amuro, never made it, possibly fixed up or used as data for this new gundam. Maybe as a suit meant for him or a titan pilot who knows. But both seem to be homages for the rivalry that this series is meant to follow up.

I wonder who the pilot will be, I doubt it will be Amuro and Char in these things, and Chris... although she has history with the original alex I doubt shed even want to be a pilot after the incident. It be a mind fuck if its that kid from 0080 grown up.

I think shes a old type, from what I know of anyways. Havent seen any material to show otherwise. The whole point of alex was to keep up with Amuro's reflexes. The magnetic coating alone wasnt keeping up with him. She was the only person on site that knew how to pilot it both times and both times it wasnt even used to its true potential. She really only was a test pilot to begin with.

This is the second one in at least 1.5 years, maybe two. Any groupbuild is more interesting than no groupbuild. As for the 50% rule, /toy/'s GM Groupbuild that went by the same rulings were mostly repaints with only like 3 kits having limbswaps, and even then they were other GMs/Feddie MS

>>
>>14961050

Well, it's not that they're lazy, it's more like they don't have the resources to make them that way. Most resin kits are made by individuals or small groups of people. They don't have the same resources and manpower Bandai has at their disposal. Bandai makes use of CAD and 3d printers in order to make parts that line up perfectly. Also, unlike plastic, resin probably isn't an ideal medium for pegs and holes that rely on friction to snap together. This is why you have groups who make resin kits, like Model Legends (the one who made the Harute kit), team up with bootleggers (Hobby Star), in order to make mass-produced plastic injection mold version of their kits. The same group has also collaborated with FPM Hobby in order to make the Exia R3 plastic conversion kit, and the yet-to-be-released MG Avalanche Exia and R3 plastic conversion kits.

It's more brittle, and unlike plastic there's zero hollowness. It's dense as fuck.

The nice thing about resin, other than how much less time and equipment is needed, is that most of it is hand-sculpted, and the silicone molds it uses allows for entire parts to be molded with curves and surface details that would be nearly impossible as a plastic model with its steel molds, unless they used a ton of parts to recreate the area in plastic. There's a reason people call them "Garage Kits". In truth they're super cheap to make, but the problem is that their silicone molds wear out really quickly (usually only 30 copies before the mold gets warped beyond usage), whereas steel molds last almost forever.

For example, FSS kits have only just started coming out as good plastic models because the tech has finally caught up with their complexity, but insanely detailed resin kits of them have existed since the 80s. Meanwhile the earliest FSS plastic kits that came out in the 90s were some of the worst mecha plastic models ever created.

not that I know of, it's kind of tricky to do even with an airbrush because the line needs to be dark enough to show through but also fade into the other colors, and you have to get all of the shades consistent across pieces

And a lot more money and time. A resin kit can be sculpted and molded in a couple of months by anyone. A good plastic model needs at least a year of development. It's a testament to Bandai's engineering and manufacturing experience that they can churn out so many kits each year.

Weird question to ask but this place might know. I'm trying to use my respirator (half mask 6000 unit with the pink cartridges suggested in the guide). I've gotten a proper seal before where the inhale and exhale tests work without leaking air, but then other times like recently I'll do the same thing and air will shoot at my eyes slightly meaning it's not on correctly. I'll tighten, loosen both sets of the front and back straps but it keeps happening. I know the cartridges aren't to blame, it's the mask/grip on my face. Anyone have a video or guide on the procedure, because this has me paranoid to spray without protection.

Yo guys!
Maybe you remember me, maybe not, but it's okay. I'm the German who just started to be intersted in Gunpla and Gundam.

Because im a lazy fuck and had a crunchyroll subscription i started to watch Iron Blooded Orphans and enjoyed it so far.
Thats the reason im here again. I bought my first few HG Gunplas. Ignore the Cuntai Collection thing, it's the christmas present for my younger brother. I already bought some tools. The guide really helped me out!

I got one/two question tho:

For a beginner like me with a little bit of warhammer 40k experience , is it okay to use those uhm .. lining pens ? which size is okay for HG Models ?

And when i remove nubs from the model, say with my hobby knife and sandpaper sticks, isn't the surface rough arround the nub ? How can i fix it ? Do i really need to repaint the part ? Or just spray a coat or two of top-coat over the model is doing the trick ? Also: Sorry for my bad english.

I hope the keep up this level of quality for further HGs from this point on, but it I feel like giving the IBO high grades an inner frame was a necessity unique to the exposed design of IBO mobile suits, and probably wont see a comeback on future kits from other series.

I was thinking about this question more, and I think if I was going to try and do a similar shading effect with no airbrush I would

>get appropriately colored (likely black and grey) pigment powders for weathering,
>paint my pieces normally,
>slightly flat topcoat, maybe semigloss
>brush on the powders very lightly to create a similar effect.
>thin topcoat layer to seal it

I think this could work pretty well on white and dark colors, but bright colors may not work well. It still won't be a complete replacement obviously. You would have to be very good at controlling the amount of powder you are laying down because the powder clinging to the matte surface is how you get the transparency.

Maybe I will give this a shot on a random part at some point.

Sure thing. One thing I've seen done is you can cut into a runner or something similar and cement the Razor sword parts onto it as a dual ended spear, or like the Transient has for example.

You could "melt" the runners with plastic cement to make a pseudo-putty with the color of whatever parts you threw in.

Cement, sandpaper, and a nail buff. Not the best way to do it but it gets the job done.

There's that cement + runner leftovers trick
Basically you chop the runner of the same color as the part you want to seamweld into little pieces, throw them in a flask with plastic cement, wait for them to melt, stir it a bit, and then apply on the inside of the seam

Finally finished my Tallgeese, looks pretty okay but probably wouldn't stand scrutiny up close.

It's incredibly unstable, although that should be obvious just looking at it. Definitely a kit that benefits from an action base if you want to pose it at all.
One thing I really don't like is the leg armor just above the foot. I feel like it should snap into place a bit better- as is, I tend to dislodge it whenever I fuck with the feet.

Overall though I really don't regret purchasing it, it looks pretty good with two visual let-downs- the orange stickers on the booster wings, and the visor having this grey sticker that doesn't really translate into the blue glow I've seen throughout the manual.
Actually, the sticker is something that confuses me. Why is it grey? There's a picture of the Leo frame head without the Tallgeese additions and it has an orange sticker, and the Tallgeese has a blue visor glow in the artwork. Why a silver sticker, then?

If you're sanding on a flat surface, sand diagonally like a cross rather than left-right or up-down. It'll help hide oversanding and blend the nub/cement with the surrounding area.

I use a five stages of increasingly smoother sanding sticks. By the end of it, you should be left with a buffed look rather than a sanded look.

I'm not really digging the electric blue. I don't think it makes for a good contrast for the dark blue. I'd prefer something like tan or cream or even a very light green. I also think that the dark blue hides a lot of the lines of the body. You need accent colors to highlight features like the front vents, or they'll just get lost from being too dark.

Anyone who has experience have any tips?

>>
>>14964713
>because I'm afraid of making a wrong cut
Plastic cement fixes all breaks. Putty/Mr. Surfacer 500/sanding will smooth out gouges and nicks. Epoxy putty fills in missing gaps.

>damaging the kit in a way I can't fix
Virtually everything can be fixed down the road. If you break something, don't think "fucking hell my life is over brb killing myself", instead take a breath think "aight how do I repair this shit?"
>>

get the fuck out Alexander Singer cocksucker bitch faggot motherfucker
>>
>>14964713

I think a lot of the fear comes from not understanding the process and how the materials work. People don't know things like the difference between glue and plastic cement. You havev to try those things out to understand what will happen when you do X or Y. If you are scared you probably need to read more about what others have tried or understand, and experiment more with your own materials.
