A lot of things contributed to the death of Gundam in the U.S.
1# The first Gundam we got was Wing, a series a lot of people defend for nostalgia as the series that got them into Gundam/mecha but most people I ever talked to thought Gundam Wing was stupid and watched shows like DBZ instead. MSG should have been released first since Tomino Gundam was and is the foundation of the series.
#2 MSG's run was not only disrupted but cancelled due to 9/11. Shows like 08th MS team and 0083 would return but to a limited audience on Midnight Run
#3 The release of Chars Counterattack and skipping over Zeta and ZZ was also puzzling since its such a huge jump in the timeline.
#4 G Gundam while well liked, the toy and model kit distribution was a huge killing blow to the franchise with pegs clogged with Zebra and Mermaid Gundams
#5 SD Gundam Force was probably the final nail in the coffin for the franchise in the states. By the time Bandai tried bringing Seed, retailers abandoned Gundam entirely.
>>13847127 0079 killed Gundam in the US. It's ratings were shit. The target audience didn't want to watch the old animation style and even the ones that wanted to watch it couldn't watch it in a complete run due to 9-11. Hell Cartoon Network only aired it to completion once and that is because they were contractually obligated to do so.
>>13847350 they never ran it in full once it got canned post 9/11 due to war themes with the last episode running on new years evil the main killer was g gundams badly ran toy-line where one shot gundams clogged shelves and pegs due to the being sold solid case shipments. Sd backfired due to western viewers not getting the fact it was an in-joke cartoon like the fact that zero thought leo's blowing up getting paper cuts was normal while the zako's didn't and it's toy sales bombed leading to bandai not being able to get an large amount of buyers to order seed wave 1 toys. CN's contract on gundam series was toy royalties based no toys killed there interest only running seed because they had to.
>>13848178 The first Gundam most people saw was Wing. Yes, there were dubs around before that but being on TV as a full length series, and having the broadly available kits, gave it a lot more impact. It was slick and stylish and colorful. 08th and 0080 were decently so too.
But MSG was just so dated in music and animation, compared to pretty much anything else Toonami aired, it was pretty jarring in comparison. And it wasn't nearly so flashy as the designs in the other shows.
