A lot of things contributed to the death of Gundam in the U.S.

1# The first Gundam we got was Wing, a series a lot of people defend for nostalgia as the series that got them into Gundam/mecha but most people I ever talked to thought Gundam Wing was stupid and watched shows like DBZ instead. MSG should have been released first since Tomino Gundam was and is the foundation of the series.

#2 MSG's run was not only disrupted but cancelled due to 9/11. Shows like 08th MS team and 0083 would return but to a limited audience on Midnight Run

#3 The release of Chars Counterattack and skipping over Zeta and ZZ was also puzzling since its such a huge jump in the timeline.

#4 G Gundam while well liked, the toy and model kit distribution was a huge killing blow to the franchise with pegs clogged with Zebra and Mermaid Gundams

#5 SD Gundam Force was probably the final nail in the coffin for the franchise in the states. By the time Bandai tried bringing Seed, retailers abandoned Gundam entirely.

Hell Cartoon Network only aired it to completion once and that is because they were contractually obligated to do so.

The first Gundam most people saw was Wing. Yes, there were dubs around before that but being on TV as a full length series, and having the broadly available kits, gave it a lot more impact. It was slick and stylish and colorful. 08th and 0080 were decently so too.

But MSG was just so dated in music and animation, compared to pretty much anything else Toonami aired, it was pretty jarring in comparison. And it wasn't nearly so flashy as the designs in the other shows.
