I finally have Victory box 2 and I desperately want to make this as watchable as possible. As I've explained over the past few months, the DNR process on the 16mm was abusive to say the least. The filter didn't even really remove the grain so much as it just softened and smeared it. Throw in some ugly edge enhancement, and you have a pasty looking image that clashes with the earlier 35mm episodes.

Now, for box 1, I attempted to "fight fire with fire" and essentially scrub the episodes clean with my own DNR pass, then apply digital grain to cover up the patchiness. In my opinion, the effect is not perfect, but a vast improvement over the BD. Now being digital grain (and being in the realm of AVISynth), the grain was essentially a highly tweaked noise filter. This time around, I want to try using actual film emulation effects. As always, I like to run the options by you guys.

Up first is the BDMV as it is, only cropped. Yes, the BD can get this bad.

And this is how I'm currently tackling it, with DNR+Digital grain.

This is with DNR only. It's too smooth unfortunately.
>>
You're the best, RX782. Thanks so much for doing this.
>>
>>13845996
This is the film emulation, that I tried setting to match a 35mm still grab of the clean OP.

So for reference, here's the clean 35mm OP.

Film emulation on the 16mm copy.
>>
They all definitely look better than the BDMV. The lines look a bit like the lines in G-Reco, just an observation. But they're all definitely watchable. Personally, I would be fine with any of the three, only with a slight preference for the DNR only. But if that's not something most people would want, between your filtered DNR+digi-grain and the film emulation, I have to say the former appeals more to me.
Sucks that it's cropped though, I hadn't noticed until now
>>
>>13846048
It's not cropped. What I meant is that I cropped it from 1920x1080 BDMV image, so there are no black bars.

I have to see how the emulation compresses. It actually might take less encoding time since it's something that be generated once and then overlayed on the episode, rather than generated as it encodes, so that's one advantage, but I won't bother if it significantly boosts sizes.
>>
>>13845979
Can you fix the shading?
>>
>>13846054
There is a clear cropping between the 16mm and 35mm in regards to the OP, is what I meant. I should have realised earlier, but I'm slow with these things.
>>
>>13846076
I think those are just two different frames.
>>
>>13846081
I checked between episodes 10 and 11, there is a clear zoom-in after the switch in film.
>>
>>13846091
To be fair, it could be a limitation in the duplication process from 35 to 16. It's a bit beyond me though.
>>
>>13846060
more like can he add shading for rest of the series
>>
>>13845982
i'm okay with this

It's just slightly zoomed, at least it's not SEED remaster or DBZ tier crop and zoomed. There's no significant loss of detail as far as I'm concerned. It is what it is though, I hope that if they ever do a G or X BD they won't botch it too much
>>
>>13846113
He's an encoder, not a miracle maker.
>>
>>13846133
Again, I don't necessarily think this is cropping done for the BD, but in the original photography.
>>
>>13846154
I know, that's what I was saying
>>
>>13845979
This one looks better than
>>13845982
>>13845996
>>13846008
because it's not as blurred.
>>
>>13846244
Going to have to agree here.
>>
>>13846244
Those jagged, artificially sharpened lines really don't bother you? The smeared grain doesn't look disgusting? My version won't ever be perfect, but the BDMV in motion is a disaster.
>>
>>13846249
It annoys me less than muddling it up even more with blurring.

>My version won't ever be perfect, but the BDMV in motion is a disaster.
webms to compare might help
>>
>>13846254
Webm's will be unfair to both examples. That codec is terrible at any kind of grain.

So he wasn't wearing panties?

I thought I'd ask since you're ITT, RX782, but OZC released the first episode of the 0083 BD release. I know you don't necessarily always approve of their encodes, but what do you think of it? Did they do a good job or would I be better off waiting for your release, if you're still doing it?
http://www.nyaa.se/?page=view&tid=782532
>>
>>13847226
Did OZC delete most of his torrents? I can't find a lot of them anymore.
>>
>>13847226
Huh, he must have bought the box. My usual source (same as Victory) has it as well, so it's just a matter of time. I haven't seen this though to comment on it.
>>
>>13847272
He seems to buy shit a lot. I think the BDMV of the MSG Trilogy was his, he just got someone else to upload it.

Also he seems to be using the 5.1 mixes for both the dub and 1990 Jap versions. Aren't those just upscales?
>>
RX, I'm working on your Zeta V2s. Do you want credit in filename? I always see remux's that don't include any of the source's names and I wasn't sure what you thought of that.
>>
Marbet has a pretty cute design, dark chocolate, feminine face, boyish short hair

This one looks better to me than the others

>>13849102
that's because it's a rape mask you retard, you wear it when you go rape someone
>>
>>13847334
Yeah those are lazy upmixes, but they're technically "untouched" from the DVD.

>>13847431
Yeah I'd appreciate it.
>>
>>13849638
I don't suppose you ever got around to End of Evangelion? If not, then which group has the best release?
>>
>>13849657
Not doing it at all. I don't know really, I haven't actually looked into it.
>>
>>13846008
VOTE GOES FOR THIS ONE
>>
>>13849657
I'd say go for Sephirotic. It looks to me like he put the most effort into his release, even if it isn't 10 bit. Commie fucked theirs up, as expected.
>>
Is this suitable, RX-senpai?

The master animation that Victory's eyecatches were taken from from is included as a bonus short. I've seen it included in a torrent on Nyaa and thought it was just wonderful. Do you think you can you encode that to go with the clean OP/ED collection?
